This package provides a flexible environment for exploration and travel between land and sea terrains on an overland map. It has been developed with the Realms of Ultima project specifically in mind but may be of wider use. The system is intended to work on an overland map where land and sea are separated by a non-walkable border. In order to go from one side to the other, the player will make use of "skiffs" to board their ships from land or return back to shore.
Feature Highlights
+ Complete set of scripts, blueprints, and conversations for implementing land and sea transitions on the overland map.
+ Ability to require ownership deeds on a ship by ship basis.
+ Detects occupied landing locations and re-directs to the next nearest location on shore if available.
+ Automatic placement of map pins on the area map to inform the player of anchored ship locations.
+ Single header file configuration parameters for determining sea travel music track and maximum distance from shore for boarding/unboarding.
+ Easily extendable to be used with docks and other placeable objects.
Please feel free to report bugs, quirks, and comments to me. I have some ideas in the works for a future version that may permit traveling by skiff along the shore and into rivers, but we'll see about that.
Contents:
ERF file: This contains all the scripts, blueprints, and conversations needed to implement the system.
HAK file: Contains MDB and SEF files used for ships.
Demo Module: This modules contains a single overland map area with two ships anchored near the shore. The larger ship requires a deed to board it, so you will need to speak with Brother Perrin to obtain one. A smaller ship to the north may be used without a deed. To board a ship, just click on one of the skiffs and you will be prompted from there. When you are on a ship, you will find a "skiff" item equipped in one of the ships inventory slots. If you want to return to land, just unequip the skiff.
There is no combat or any real game play with this module, it is just for testing out the land and sea transition system. You will need the HAK file to play it.
Movie file: Zipped AVI movie demonstrating the land and sea transitions.
Toolset User's Manual: Manual describing in detail the internal system mechanics.
Usage:
Feel free to use as is or just grab whatever pieces are helpful to you, but please give credit and offer your vote. It helps to keep us all motivated.
Acknowledgments:
I would like to thank loudent2 for sharing his work in rotating several ship models 180 degrees so that they can be used as model game effects. Check out his own exciting work Sea of Stars
A compressed AVI file showing some of the features of the system. It was taken prior to the final polish, so some of the mechanics are improved, like the ship inventory GUI automatically closing after use.

OMG! Now I've got images in my head of at sea random encounters with pirate ships, transitioning to 2 side by side walkable ships with pirates storming the decks!

Hi Chris, thanks for voting. Yes, I would say that having things like horses and carpets would not only be doable, but comparatively easier in some ways because there is no need to jump over no-walk borders. I believe loudent's work has pursued using appearance type changes instead of roster companions so that will be a good reference.

I see no reason why you couldn't go a step further and unify overland ships with overland mounts (horses). A PC buys a horse (of various tints and sizes) from a stablemaster and it changes the PC's appearance, movement rate and some detection skills whenever walking on the overland map. Doable?

Oh, BTW, I just got FTP directions so the movie file will be uploaded sometime today. The manual is also nearly completed, so that should be added soon as well.
