I think making a good waterfall requires a better visual effect than is available, something beyond the scope of this tutorial. The water fall looks like a VFX, portal of some sort, stretched? At any rate Im fairly sure the vertical wated is done with a VFX. Cool tutorial. :)

Good tutorial right through to the end, but, right at the end the picture shows a lake, a river, then the waterfall pouring into the lake from the river... In your tutorial you get up to putting the Splash effect in, then you never said anything about how to put the actual waterfall in.
