Using the journal is enormously easy in NWN2, compared to NWN1. Using the Journal allows you to set up a quest, with steps, each step marked so Player Characters can progress through it, and then not repeat it (at least, until the server resets. For doing so for Persistent Worlds, please see the links at the end of this article.)
Advantages:
Easier/faster to use once you get it,
 Enormously easier to debug
More fun for players - they get a perhaps not VERY helpful, but helpful reminder of what they need to do next.
 It automates some things
It creates no new scripts for each quest
It is much more fun than setting variables for quests via custom-build gc_ and ga_ scripts for each quest, once you wrap your head around it.

A few paragraphs and a couple screencaps of the Journal editor in the toolset, and how to create a quest using the journal and conversations suddenly becomes clear.

Nice work, though there is a piece missing for PW's. In multiplayer, if you join a party, all your journal entries are automaticly synced to the party leaders. This is not an option that can be turned off. I looked into using a database to update the journal entries, but to my dissapointment, there is no On_Player_Join_Party event that is fired to be looked for. So unless you have some predetermined triggers to update the journal (heartbeats, transitions, etc).
Its unfortunate, and really a big dissapointment, but it is just how it is till/if Obsidian lets it get high enough on their priority list.
