Description
Now at Version 2! 61 spells and counting! This is a system I have developed for casters to gain Epic Spells without sacrificing feats when levels are gained, which they should not have to do (according to the Epic Level Handbook, anyways). The entire system is based around dynamically adding and removing the appropriate feats to a creature hide. To be able to learn new epic spells, you must have a book explaining the research process. You must also have acquired the appropriate Spell Seed feat(s) before researching a new spell. Seed feats are acquired by reading(using) old books that contain the knowledge of the seed. If you have the Spell Seed, a high enough Spellcraft skill, and the gold and excess experience to be able to research the spell, you can find a laboratory or other appropriate place to do the researching.

You will then have a new Epic Spell researched, which you can then dynamically add to or remove from your Epic Spells radial menu (as more than 7 spells on the radial will cause a crash). I have included a demo module, an erf, the needed hak and tlk files, as well as a couple high level casters for people who want to try this out without fear of corrupting their own, or who don't want to create a new one. Currently (as of V2), there are 61 active spells, with the structure for addition of the 10 missing ones that are still being worked on. They will be added when completed.

Many new options are available now that were not in the demo version. Almost everything is customizable now, or at least toggleable. Some of the options include: - XP costs for casting - the 'take ten' rule for casting/researching - the primary ability modifier variant rule for skill checks. - backlash damage - DC adjustments for Spell Foci feats. - gold cost researching variable - XP cost researching variable - DC's for individual spells - seed requirements for individual spells - XP casting costs for individual spells - School designation for individual spells - seed accessibility - seed DC's /////// Special credit goes to NronKsr, for his creation of several spells and icons, as well as Soopaman, for his creation of the VFX for Gem Cage and Nailed to the Sky, and Danmar, for his extra book icons.

excellent!...you should upgrade this to be CEP and 1.69 compatible. Also, the CEP plans to add spells to it..we would love to see these in those spells. CONtact me here via e-mail or go to the CEP forum and offer them there.

nevermind. figured it out. i never played the third edition, so i'm always confused by feats in general. umm.. this is gonna sound really stupid, but half my trouble was that i didn't notice that the pile of books had multiple pages. judging from some of the past posts, i bet i'm not the only one.

Well, Boneshank was last heard of working on the Improved Spell Capacity System not so much on this. However, Primogenitor has put loads of work integrating this (plus developments since, I think) into PRC, so I would expect that would make everyone happy?

I would like to ask the same question (was the work on version 3 halted?). About one and a half years have passed, all we heard was "it's coming, but I don't know why since I'm busy. But keep waiting! It'll be there some day!". It's, of course, understandable that a person's real life affairs are far more important than the NWN hobby, but why then just not say "I've stopped working on version 3. Sorry." and admit that you failed to do it (by any reason - be it private life or just inability to add support for something) than keeping people in tension for sooo long (and giving not much more than just a list of cool features, not even a demo of what's been done so far). You know, anyone can compile a list of whatever-cool-features-he-can-only-imagine, but it won't be really helpful.

Love your epic spell system. It was trivial to implement. Eagerly awaiting v3.

While I would prefer to see it standalone, I won't have a problem with getting out the good bits from your update to put back into the version I have running.

@DNC- I had the same problem trying the demo until I discovered that most, if not all of the Epic Spells have Epic Spell Prerequiisites. For example you must have learned the energy and animate seeds (I think) to research the Animus Ball spell (corrections?)

Hopefully, with the decreasing amount of new stuff appearing, we can now see a higher degree of major content consolidation outside CEP. PRC and ESS seem the best start off base.

I guess I would be the other person waiting for it, then.

I love playing wizards, but epic wizards sucked before you came along and returned the proper balance to the game. I remember getting to the last chapter of NWN and feeling ripped off when I couldn't even beat a troll with Delayed Blast Fireballs, while fighters were tearing up entire armies.

Neverwinter Nights was broken, and you fixed it. Bioware should pay you for tying up their loose ends. I only wish I knew enough to help you out.

I would also be interested in a seperate release. Not everything is PRC compatable, unfortunately, and I will probably want to bring my Elven High Mage with me everywhere. Also, if the next version of the PRC comes out later then your work is finished, then we can enjoy it when you're done, with the 2.2c version stuff.

Thanks for the update. I'm one of those two people waiting for v3. I have no plans to use the PRC, and would very much like to see a standalone version. However, I can only imagine all of the hard work you've put into this, and would understand if you'd like to put it on the shelf after the PRC version.

Thanks again for your work, and I look forward to seeing ISC in action.

This update is for the one or two people who might still be waiting for ESSv3...

I *AM* still working on this, believe it or not.
I do have to say, however, that v3 will *NOT* be stand-alone as originally planned; I have succumbed to the relentless assimilation of the PRC, and spent significant time and energy making the new version compatible and dependent upon the PRC's work.

I might do an independent version that doesn't require PRC to work, but that would be after releasing it to the folks at the PRC. If there is significant voicing for this to happen, then I will do it. If nobody wants a separate version, then there won't be a problem.

As for what's currently done:
- the Improved Spell Capacity system, standard spells (no PRC spells yet)
- prestige classes of Elven High Mage, Netherese Arcanist, Divine Conduit, Archaic Cognizant, and 2 secret prestige classes
- a ritual/circlemagic framework
- the 10 'missing' spells from ESSv2
- 28 Elven High Magic spells/rituals
- 22 new epic spells
- cost-sharing for spell research
- conversion of applicable epic spells to their ritual origin
- several interface improvements
- framework adjustments to allow bards, paladins, and rangers access to epic spells via ISC
- a couple epic Bard songs (based on seeds, and researched)

Unfinished:
- the rest of the planned Bard songs (~18 more)
- the rest of the planned epic spells (~25 more)
- the inclusion of the PRC spells into ISC
- about 50 icons
- a few spell VFX

Oh, and as always... Release Date == When It's Done!

Spellcraft and Lore are both INT based, so no need to boost WIS here.
Of course, Boneshank has implemented variant rules that allows you to use your primary ability for epic spell tests...

Try making a custom item that gives you Lore+50.

Or you can press ~ and then type:

DebugMode 1 [ENTER]
SetWis 80 [ENTER]
[Click on your character in the module]
SetINT 80 [ENTER]
[Click on your character in the module]
DebugMode 0 [ENTER]

This should have boosted your Wisdom and Intelligence scores, which are added to Lore and Spellcraft checks respectively to huge enough levels for you to make checks that are successful, given you meet the specific seed's other requirements.Hope is the denial of reality. DNC did you use the unique power on the seed books? Thats how you "learn" the seeds. If you use the unique power of the spell books then you get a description of what the spell is and what is needed for it.

Good morning Boneshank,

I am giving myself away on when I play NWN.

Thank-you for the information. I followed your explaination to the letter. Still the characters Lacked the Knowledge.

I decided to remove NWN (Platinum Edition), killed my registry (which means I have to re-install some things) and deleted everything on my HD refering to NWN. EXTREME :(

I then reinstalled NWN, updated to 1.64 and added CEP 1.50. I built a character to using a Fast track MOD. All BIOWARES Epic spells are back and work. Then I placed all files (from EPIC SPELLCASTING v.2) in their right place erf to erf, tlk to tlk, etc). I used the FAST TRACK methods for XP and GOLD. Picked up the Treasure.

All of this put this character at the following; Spellcraft 115, Lore 65, XP at 2,000,000 and GOLD at 2,000,000.

I then obtained the seeds of knowledge. I used the labaratory to research. The DM stated I lacked the knowledge for each and every seed. I presumed this means the character build was not "good enough."

I then used the wizard that comes with the download. I added about 1,000,000 to XP and GOLD just for safety measures. I obtained the same results. Not enough knowledge.

I also tried to manage the Epic speels by "sleeping". No luck there either.

At this point in time my lack of knowledge makes me feel really stupid. Everyone else understands this system, loves it and uses it religously. I want to be part of this group.

I am sorry for being such a bother is there anything you can recommend to help?

(All files are dated 4-16-2004 at way early in the AM)

@ D&C - Okay, first of all, I'm going to assume you mean you are trying out my demo module (even though you state you have the PRC module updater installed...).
Simply 'acquiring' the seeds is not enough - you must use them to add the seed to your knowledge.
Then, after gaining the knowledge for the seed(s) needed for a particular epic spell (which you can find all about by using an epic spell's book), and gaining enough excess gold and XP (which you say you have), you can attempt to research the spell by placing the book into the inventory of a researching placeable (in my demo, it is a laboratory). If you pass the spellcraft check for the spell, you have researched successfully (and lose the applicable gold and XP).
After that, you can now add the spell to your radial menu (in my demo, this is done by pressing the Rest button 'r', then choosing the proper response in the conversation).
You must also rest before being able to cast any spells, as well.

If you are not using my existing system, but the altered PRC version, then I believe you need to click on some 'Replenish' feat on the radial, or something, I'm not entirely sure.

I am real new to NWN world, and a very old player of D AND D. I am not impressed with BIOWARES epic spells. I am trying to use your system and have been unsuccessful. I have read through all of these postings and tried to find a solution to my problem. I managed to get the seeds, but I can not get my spells to come up on the radial menu. I also can not accomplish any research. I have the SPELLCRAFT at 34, LOTS of XP and GOLD. The research states I do not have the knowledge. I have not only tried my character, I tried the characters supplied with the download and the module. No luck. I am sure I am missing some piece of information. I do have PRC module updater and the AI henchman package installed. I do not have access anymore to my original Epic bioware spells either.

I hope all is going well with you and your family. If the family is driving you crazy just cast CHARM PERSON and a few FIREBALLS at them, that is sure to get their attention. ;)
