Description
This is the updated version of the first installment of a series. It contains various small fixes, new items, dynamically created map notes, improved difficulty balance and added character portraits (a list of these changes can be found in the text file that comes with the zip). It is set in a world inspired by Planescape: Torment, Brom, gothic, fetish and other sources. This first part should take your character to level 2 or 3, and serves as an introduction. The next installment will be much larger and focused on building the character up for the main plot thread. To install, just put the .mod file into the NWN\modules folder, and the .hak file into the NWN\hak folder.

Subtract for item stripping.
I felt the mod areas were just unfinished with unfinished quests and too large areas in some cases. _________________________ Steve's Characters - please don't forget to vote on them if you play them.

My character: lv. 1 fighter, did not reach level 2 by end.
I'm a sucker for anything Planescape. Or even planescapeish. This module, while not set in the planes or the City of Doors, and while never referencing the Lady of Pain, does a great job in the early goings of evoking the feel of Planescape: Torment. Flaws and all, P:T is still among the better games I've ever played, and from a story and atmosphere standpoint is second to none. You begin this module with absolutely nothing, and all the equipment and supplies you find throughout the adventure are below the quality of what you typically start with as a NWN1 character. There are quirky characters who seem to want nothing more than to manipulate you for their own sick larks, there is poverty, and there is a feeling of desperation in this module that is difficult to experience.
Unfortunately, beyond the atmosphere, the execution is poor. The story is very open ended, which is fine. But it does lead to one feeling rather lost at times, and while exploring randomly I happened upon a key event in the module that lead to what would be the next chapter. Combat is extremely difficult, and pretty frequent, so I have no idea why it's rated as combat light in the description. My fighter was hopelessly outclassed, and I ended up using a spoiler to figure out how to get a henchman to proceed in the module. Even then, I ended up dying frequently. In desperation, I started respawning...and discovered that there is no penalty for it. So, I ended up respawning every other encounter until I finally finished the thing. It was ridiculous. I think a dex-oriented fighter type might do ok here (?), but otherwise I'd recommend starting around level 3 or so.
It felt like the author had a very clear vision for the world he wanted to create. But when it came to the actual module, it just didn't come together. The story is mostly non-existent, combat is way over the top, and you never have the slightest clue as to what is going on. I enjoyed some aspects of this module, but I can't give it a solid recommendation. _________________________ My NWN Blog FRW Character Creator

I just replayed and managed to finish this one thanks to some hints found in the review. In short this is a very original module (I even created a tribal ancient kin - more or less equivalent to an Aasimar Barbarian - for it). Yet the module itself is like a big puzzle where you need to do the right things and initiate conversations in a specific order. Combats are tough since you have almost no equipment even if you manage to get some help. Also the module is complete but the sequel was never made. It may be possible to play something like Dovedale or HMC1 right after this as you should be level 2 at that point. I am not going to replay this one and would rate it somewhere around 6. I can only recommend it to patient players looking for original content.
So far I cannot say that this mod is any good perhaps it was great back when it was created but it is not really the case now.
You start with nothing (great for monks) and are asked or forced to fight NPCs or creatures from the start. I do not see how to get equipment (got 65 gold coins) or to reach level 2 in a fairly safe way. Now one may start looting around but IMHO this should turn the guards or other NPCs hostile unless you are a stealthy character.
The atmosphere could be great it it was really immersive but I'm afraid it looks more like some huge empty areas and bits and pieces of the story here and there not much to hook a fresh character I'm afraid.

Argh, just read through your "signing off" post. Don't know if you ever read your nwvault comments, now, but thought I'd add my name to the list of folks who really wish you'd reconsider! --jlsGaladriel

Love the atmosphere/ambience: great attention to detail, especially the custom items and portraits. I'm looking forward to the next installment.
Given the narrowed range of weapon options, though, you might want to add a warning to focus on melee characters (or maybe spellcasters?), as opposed to ranged ones. My first character's point-blank shot and weapon-focus longbow feats didn't serve her too well... !

A few glitches:
During one of the half-breed raids on town, the clothing merchant was killed. This was particularly unfortunate because I had sold him my surgical knife, which he didn't drop on death. Pretty much the end of that quest thread... It did, however, teach me to defend the other merchant something fierce!
*
I'm all for a good fight, but the construct was just too powerful for me (I was without henchperson at the time.) I ran, but he followed me to town, where he promptly slaughtered innocent townsfolk. (I reloaded, and being too weak to kill him honestly, had to "kill" him in the chooser. I *hate* cheating.) Perhaps restrict him to sewers only, or make key townsfolk invulnerable? Consider losing the regeneration, or otherwise scaling him back?
*
I never did get into the gardens -- was this related to the for-me-undoable surgical knife / lab quest?

Still, despite glitches, I really enjoyed the look-and-feel, the vulnerable start, and the sense of mystery (what *did* happen?) Definately not a monty-hall scenario, which lent a lot to the harsh atmosphere.

Will post more to comments: essentially, great atmosphere, a few game-play glitches.
In the middle of playing this mod, and just wanted to say how much I'm enjoying it. There's just not enough mods with a really good twisted viewpoint, that keeps you on your toes while you play.
I've been getting really, really bored with the repetative nature of games lately: line up the monsters, use the tactics, kill and prevail... SNORE!!! There are people (seems like most) who find those gaming mechanics facinating, but after years and years of playing games fashioned for those type, the bloom is definately off the rose.
I like, wait, LOVE a good story. I've found myself over the last months cheating like a banshee so I can get through the *boring* parts and back into the plot.
And this game is good on story. And I'm really upset that when I'm finished, it's gonna be over.
I'm not dissing anyone's reason or preference for playing: we're all gamers here, and that's a special breed. But what I *passionately* am ashamed of is people that decide that they don't like someone's creative effort to the point were they actually stifile that work from being created.
This kind of thing should be rewarded, not vilified by those that have no concept or appreciation of the creative process. To those, I say "Put your money where you mouth is, or you ain't saying a damn thing".
Again, really liking this mod, and hoping against hope I'll be able to play Chapter 2 someday.

Hi,
I heartily enjoyed the first segment of this series. The atmosphere really came together: the npc names, the dialogues, the equipment, the architecture. Overall, a very immersive and compelling fantasy.
In regard to finishing the second segment, please remember that sometimes perfection must take a back seat to creation. I'm a creative type myself, and I've learned through experience that a half-baked creation far exceeds no creation at all.
In other words, if chapter 2 isn't as beautiful as chapter 1, I'll still play it and enjoy it. =]
