Strife in Grimbone The aid of worthy adventurers has been sought by Baron Truestone in investigating reports of supernatural activities in the outlying settlement of Grimbone. This apparently simple mission thrusts the players into a complex and dangerous adventure where events of the distant past have led to a present of danger, intrigue and supernatural terror. This large adventure has been extensively revised for SOU with new areas, new plots, a new cutscene and new scripted placeables such as secret objects. The secret door system has been updated. Scripted rules include henchmen, death and dying as in 3rd Edition Adventure series, poisoned locks, underwater and drowning, secret doors, spot rolls for rangers and others and extensive use of other skills. Extra music from Icewind Dale by Jeremy Soule is added as a hak pak. A DM's guide is included that will serve as a walkthrough. V1.4 fixes various bugs.

Good plotline, story well narrated and quite inmersive. Game deployment was a little too hack&slash and the forest thing too large for my liking

Just played this version, 1.4 SOU, didn't catch the fact the there was a new one out. Does't make any difference to me though as I really had a great time with this mod. A good story & dialog are first on my list so I was a happy PC all the way through. Thanks for all your hard work, support and updates to a great mod.

Great story, had monster opponents as opposed to humans, only wants me to look foward to Grimbone 2.
In competition with the Sands of Fate. ;) _________________________ Steve's Characters - please don't forget to vote on them if you play them.

Enjoyable early level adventure from a talented author.

I liked this mod. Pity that some items -namely the Unholy Amulet- don't work elsewhere.
I couldn't do several sidequests, perhaps because I have the 1.62 patch, and would have liked to. I'll try to do this module with other character, just in case I missed some clue.
I'm a compulsive mapper, and Dimleaf Forest was too tiresome, and the encounters too nasty.
Some dialogues can make you lose some quests, I'm afraid. For instance, when I had Winnie's clothes (and had already killed the sorcerer), she still didn't take them or go back home.
I voted a 8.25 precisely because of those problems in the dialogues. Perhaps they are bugs.

I have just uploaded (23/07/04) an updated HOTU version of the adventure. If you have HOTU and CEP, I highly recommend playing that version which has a number of changes and corrections.
The new version is called "Strife in Grimbone (new version)" !!

Will be uploading HOTU/CEP update in next day or two.

Ok module. Somewhat unpolished though.

Well i just finished this module. It was not bad but i fear i would not call it a classic either.
The story was quite interesting but my enjoyment was somewhat dampened by the execution. The module felt somewhat unpolished and had other minor but annoying problems.
Some of the areas (forest especially) were far too big and empty. I found the experience of going through those forests very tedious.
There were some bugs such as being unable to loot the thieves guild and the man whose wife was killed by a vampire not giving me the brooch he claimed he would.
Still despite some problems i finished the module and had fun with it. Nice job

This was great! Varied and intricate plot with layers of intrigue, and a whole back-story for the "evolution" of the humanoid races! But hack/slash not neglected either. Good balance for starting characters (not if alone!) up to level 4.

The story and scripting are great, but there are basic issues that prevent the score from being higher.

Spoilers for SwordiKain,
Ghost Quest
If this is the Grimbone Ghost, it attacks all foreigners, but if you defeat the Beast Men etc and meet the ghost again it thanks you and no longer attacks - the curse is lifted since strangers have proved themselves to be friends of Grimbone
3rd Council member:
There are two aspects. One is finding his journal in the top floor of the main town hall building. The other starts with a programmed event at night where a demi-vampyr kidnaps a woman; you follow them to a house basement through a secret door and into a secret tunnnel to a crypt where you discover the body of the 3rd council member and his story.
Hope that helps

Dear J'Dai,
Whatever you wish. I did quite a lot of playtesting in multiplayer and mainly had in mind 4 starting PCs when creating the module. Hope you don't think it's rubbish! I would be interested in making corrections as a result of constructive criticism.

This was a great module! good job on the story line and the encounters. I particularly liked how you set up alot of the encounters.
I was unable to solve the ghost quest and the third council members quest. could you email me what i did wrong?
Thanks for taking the time to build this. It was truly alot of fun.

By the way, you make the point (in your interview) that 'Strife in Grimbone' was made "for a single 1st to 4th level PC or small party..."
I did not get that impression from the game download site. Do you want me to review it in both formats (SP and MP)?

Dear J'Dai,
Thanks for deciding to play it. I hope it's OK. I don't think anyone has looked at this module since last summer! Yes, I would definitely update it if bugs/simple enhancements were pointed out, as I feel minor bugs that I didn't anticipate can still spoil people's gaming experiences.

I have selected you module for review. Typically I like to contact the module author via email, but you've not posted one here. In any event, I will post any porblems or issues we encounter.

I uploaded version 1.4 last night, one version with the extra music, one without, as requested. It fixes the door from the forest to the crypt, and the potatoes bug, among other changes.
Thanks for your forbearance.

I am sorry. I just seem to be creating as many bugs as I am solving. Please don't anyone bother to play until I come back after playtesting again. I will download two versions, one without the extra music for those who already have it or do not want it.

John,
I downloaded the latest version last night and tried it this morning. Still can't get into the crypt on the eastern edge of Dimleaf. The key opens the gate but can't get any further.
regards

It's a good mod, but too buggy for. Anyway I didn't have a problem with the forest. It wasn't the most exciting area I've been in, but at least it was original.
SPOILERS
BUG 1: grocery quest. I have all the six non-rotten potato sack, but I can't tell it to the grocery man. Probably because I came back from the farm with three sack, put them on the ground in town, and only later came back again with the remaining three sack (going around with six was too much).
BUG 2: broken area transition in the tree to get into the crypt. I triggered the trap, I opened the door with the key, but the area transition doesn't work for me. I've version 1.1, but you do not say to have changed it. So I clic on the area transition and nothing happen, my character come inside the tree and just stand there. I tried for a few minutes, I changed areas, I reloaded. No results.
Random encounters: since you are usually fighting very weak gnolls, it is a bit surprising and also unjustificated to be ambushed by so many specialized monster (I was in the farm area when it happened). Randon encounter should be easier than fixed encounter not so much tougher. Anyway this is a personal opinion and I will simply not take the change to meet the random guys anymore.
SPOILER END
Please, really, when you will upload a new version can you make a separate upload for the mod file? I don't wanna to download again the music that is perfectly working.
