Description
'I offer you a very special job. Suffice to say here that the challenge will be great, the rewards accordingly magnificent. To obtain further details, present this message to the barkeep of the Rusted Hinge tavern. He will send you to me. If there is no response within three hours I will assume you are uninterested or unavailable. Allow me to warn you now that Baile Berrig is involved. This is a very good short adventure for upper-level characters.

I really enjoyed this mod. Didn't have any issues that I can recall (it was a while ago... late voting.. bygones) I would highly recommend it and play it again myself.

Nice little module if somewhay dated by today's tstamdards, but still fun to play.

Someone above said it was worth a 9 in 2002. it's still worth an 8 IMO.

Fun and well put together little mod.

I played through with a level 13 wizard and found the level of difficulty OK. The time restraint restricted my resting but I didn't run out of time.

Played with a 14th level monk and found it a bit too easy. Only the big boss fights were a bit challenging. The character interaction was good, but not exceptional, the plot twists didn't feel all that twisty, and the module wasn't especially tense (I finished with plenty of time to spare). In fact, I used a potion of restoration, which removed the effects of the disease, which left me wondering if I was still sick at all. The journal entries were sometimes confusing (at one point telling me I had killed someone when I hadn't), and at one point, I wasn't even sure if the module was finished or not - it seemed like it was, but there were still several open journal entries. And when it finally did end, it was anticlimactic. Overall, the module is ok, but based on the review, I was expecting more.

'Short, but sweet' about sums this module up.

You'll only get 2-3 hours out of it and gain a level of experience. But what's there is quality. The main plot is very engaging and the writing is rich. The dialogue offers plenty of role-playing options (I believe one list mentioned that LG alignment would not be appropriate, but I found many of the responses to be quite compatible with LG). I found the challenge adequate. The battle against Felix and his henchmen was difficult without being overpowering (my horn of blasting and an Evard's Black Tentacles item from a previous module helped a lot). Areas and encounters are all very well laid out.

Major complaints would be 1) the general merchant is a bit generous when purchasing your loot (I walked away with about 150,000 extra gp) and 2) an item which grants 10 uses of Destruction to any class seems a bit much for even an end-module reward. Complaints are few, though.

Major reason I can't give the module a higher vote than 7 is the size. In terms of quality, this is among the better modules on the Vault. But it would be unfair to the authors of those modules to give equal weight to one which is much smaller. So consider 7 a very fine vote for a module of this size.

I wrote my first comments about this unique module back in 2004 (4 pages down).

True the module can be very hard in some areas either bring a really tough character or one that can sneak pass the most deadly foes (e.g. iron golem or the creatures between the two islands).

I just found a bug seriously limiting the options you have to complete the module if it can be completed at all. I decided to listem to Arielle or at least play along to get the three components the trouble is the portal to Bartell (in Nexus) does not seems to work anymore. From the village you cannot walk back to Bartell (only to the hideout) and the mage in the crypt does not help either.

Is there another way to go back?

Nice short module. Considering its age, I'm sure that it introduced some innovative ideas back then and it still can be an enjoyable experience.

I actually felt anxious and worried as the time passed. My char was a level 12 fighter and the battles were challenging except when I decided to kill both Felix and Ariel. These two last fights were quite hard as they ought to be. My henchman was the thief but I found her weak, I felt a little relieved when I had to kill her in Ariel's lair :p. I liked the characters, the fact that I could make different choices and the plot was interesting.

Can't add much more than I really enjoyed this concise, tight module

Posted by Dwayne at 2006-07-01 20:02:38    Voted 9.25 on 07/01/06
Good plot and enjoyable henchmen. The creatures seemed a little hard for non-warriors but are beatable. Sneaking also does work. The treasure was way too much. One thing that is confusing is that it is not apparent that you should go to the town first. If you don't go there first the dialog in town does not make much sense. The player should be directed to go to the town first and then the map. Otherwise a good module.

Ok little module that time has rusted and needs polish. Back in 2002 this might have been a '9' module.

I'm not using any haks/overrides and found
Bugs -
1.The "Cure" potion didn't have a single use as stated, but instead a once a day use. So I could endlessly get 3000 experience per drink. Same was true for the Raise Dead ring.
2.I could no longer summon my familiar 1/2 way through the mod. Unsummoning him when he wasn't there didn't help, but I would hear the panther's growl every once in a while, which was odd.

Well done. Brilliant plot twist turning the adventure into something unexpected. I Really liked this one.

Starting to show its age, but the dialogue of the characters is enjoyable and well-written.

SPOILERS
Some minor points/comments. There were some questionable monster locations/AI. Notably, fire elementals in the library. Books and fire are not the cosiest of neighbours. Also stated above, the age of this module shows especially in the AI of the monsters and henchwoman. Hostile mages that rush into and hand-to-hand combat and a henchwoman who stands there and just gets hit are some examples. I also, had a faction bug/problem when I returned to the villiage after killing Bartel and the doctor and his butler are hostile. Had to kill them but his daughter was still saying "Hi" to me.
Thankyou for uploading the module.

Posted by aharetz at 2006-02-28 15:53:49
Well done. I liked the feel of a short, between-campaign adventure. My only objection is the hints at the module being part of a campaign: it works great on its own between big adventures, and the references to "greater powers," especially the demon appearing out of nowhere at the end without an explanation within this module, were a bit off-putting.

Just played this with my 16 wizard - got him to 17. This was short and sweet and I felt a little overpowered against some of the NPC bad guys, but those elementals are a killer! Great job on the scripting though.

Posted by Egaskrad at 2006-01-06 17:32:31    Voted 8.00
I was one of those who tested out this module way back in 2002. By that time this module was one of the uniques and introduced ideas that no other modules provided. It was actually the first module to introduce the idea of "directly link up the key area, skipping all the empty area of ramdom encounter". It was a major improvement by that time. It was also the first module that give you a good reason to not going to rest other than the label "no resting" sticking in the description. Just don't leave the computer there for your dinner and you will be quite fine with it.

I can understand that after all these years, most of the bright ideas are now fairly common but please keep in mind that this modules had contributed many ideas to the nwvault and to all of those modules that came after it.

Congra to the author.

Though this is roleplayed with alignment shifts and all, I found the game play to be very aggravating.

The time limit was too much pressure and the story may be original, but bland.

To me, this one was not inspiring.

Good twists for such a short module.

Another beautiful snowflake. Twisted, and therefore intresting, plot, though it was short, hence why I call it a snowflake.

My ratings are generally given in regards to writing more than anything else, if you wonder at its height.

Indeed am underrated module.
Short and sweet with a good story and some dark twists, well balanced combat (apart from some minor Arghs like spawning 6 save-or-die critters onto the player at some point) and some perfectly hatable villains that can all get what they deserve in the end. ;)
Fun, and it aged quite well.

I am having a hard time replaying this one. May be it works better with higher level characters (15-16) rather than L12-L13. I tried it with a pure fighter as well as a barbarian/fighter, I almost managed to reach Arielle. I guess my Dwarven Defender (L14) might do a bit better.

Just finished playing this mod with a lvl 14 wizard and found it very enjoyable.

I did find it a bit strange to play a good character, it didn't feel right. Perhaps I'll try an evil character sometime.

The combat was well balanced IMO, but there was a bit too much of it at times.

I liked how you had to think where to go next. Not too hard or too easy to figure out, just perfect.

Overall a very good module that I would certainly recommend to others. Great job.
