Description
SUMMARY: This mod is designed for a starting Monk character, and comes with a large range of upgradeable robes designed for single and multi-class monks. The setting is the Island of Jin-Po, which can be imagined as a feudal Chinese island under the control of a Japanese Empire. The possession of weapons is highly illegal, and so the great Master Monk Gouken has begun training students in The Way at his mountaintop temple. Now, as a Novice of the Temple, the time has come for you to take your Initiation, and become a full-fledged Disciple of Gouken. But dark agencies both mundane and supernatural are at work on the Island of Jin-Po, and it will take all your skill and training to prevail. FEATURES: Full supporting cast of NPCs, many with unique and useful abilities and knowledge. Some NPCs (both friendly and enemy) are capable of stealth and ambushes. Two semi-secret side quests for the more advanced player. A unique (I think) system for death and respawning.

Shame the way stops here(no sequel).
Issues:
- Chin stops running when talked to
- Vestry of Death bug, as mentioned below
- Hikaru does not use his bow nor any blade he might have had, just fists
- couldn't find his letter's recipient
- respawning encounters with spirits(water, jewel, nature)
- no ability to peruse henchies backpacks, nor tell them tactics, nor give them some potions. They are weak by the way.
- same encounters repeated many times. Critters are nicely made, but how many times can one fight the same encounter.
- could really use some oriental haks.
- one flying stone(with ogre surprise inside) in the upper plateau
- lots and lots of backtracking
- multiple spars with Dan Hibiki yields nothing, he stays the same level and you can spar him infinity times. _________________________ Thanks Rolo:)

I liked the various upgrading robes and the way my character was rewarded by smallish pieces of equipment after quests without munchkining. And any module without typos is a relief!
Unfortunately, the mod still sucks. Combat is impossibly difficult for a new character. I don't mind doing things like "tell the henchie to stand his ground, attack a baddie from extreme range with a shuriken to lure him out, kill him, heal, repeat" for boss fights - but for *every single fight*?? After a while I started quicksaving every time my char scored a hit without getting hit himself and reloading when he died - which still took me a couple of reloads for each and every group of opponents. I assume that this mod was not playtested at all with a new character.
And then there was the endless running through cleared areas, either after finishing a quest or for a later quest that took place somewhere I had already been... There are shortcuts for this.
This is one of the few mods I didn't play through to the end. A major pity, because the good parts described above would have made for a very interesting mod indeed - if the author had invested a little time in playtesting.

I tried this mod several times and I honestly lost interest due to the difficulty. For a mod that is supposed to be for first level characters and written as such this mod is far too difficult in the combat.
I did ok until I started battling all the nature spirits. There are just too many of them and they are far too tough.
All that said, I did enjoy the setting and the depth that went into the design of the dialogue. Good back story as well.
Wisecrack modus on.
The chinese characters in the picture mean empty hand, not open hand.
Wisecrack modus off.
Will give it a try.

That's not "difficult" combat, that's "IMPOSSIBLE" combat. Queen of demons that regenerates, and also teleports so that by the time I get to her, she's healed again? That's just stupid, annoying, and a good reason to just thrown the module away. Lovely concept, ruined yet again by a developer who confuses "annoying" with "challenging".
Long, useless runs from one end of the map to the other, followed by this type of stupid, annoying combat? Give me a break. I'm outta here.

Very good the only problems were a bit of repetitive and difificult combat and the fact that theres isnt a sequel. But it will give you a well rounded monk by its end.

My comments from last year are still valid I'm afraid. Just tried this again with a pure lvl 6 monk and the Mountain part was as tedious and boring as always.
You guys are certainly not playing with hardcore settings and/or you got specific equipment I missed (e.g. to deal with the spirits). The module is quite immersive but I really don't like the console game feeling (oops that thing killed me never mind I still have 4 lives to reach the next level). I understand there is a public for that.

The author did a fantastic job creating a fantasy-Asian themed module with just the standard toolset. I loved the begining where the outfit you choose reflects your choice of martial arts style and gives you specific advantages. I thought the individual quests and characters were interesting. There isn't really much of an overall storyline, which isn't all that bad except that the module just kind of ends. The fights were challenging, which meant a lot of resting, which brings the score down a little. However, the big drawback was the huge amount of backtracking through large areas, and the repetitious fights with the same kind of opponents over and over again. Although I enjoyed the module overall, there were times when it became tedious.

Ah, that was a really nice mod. A pity there's no continuation.

Excellent job! It's too bad there doesn't seem to be a sequel, but maybe the author is waiting for NWN II to come out first? The only suggestion I have is that someone in the temple give a little more instructions and advice on the upgradeable outfits. I and some other players took a little while to figure them out.
Your solution worked like a charm msamec, thanks loads, it was driving me nuts not being able to finish this module.

I solved this problem by;
1. telling Yohko to 'stand guard' by the door
2. Upon polymorphing, I immediately right clicked my character and 'unpoloymorphed' myself
3. Grabbed the death key
4. Killed the bad guys
5. went back to Yohko and told her to 'follow' on my way out the door.

I'm running into the same crash problem in the vestry of death as mentioned by OpiumVanDerPol. I haven't managed to find any solution, unfortunately. If Opium or anyone else who has solved the problem could post the solution here it would be much appreciated.

Can't wait for part 2, still on the work or scrapped?

Great module, unique and interesting monsters and good design throught. My only complaint is that I found some fights to be a bit to hard, I often had to stop and rest between each fight, and that is just boring in the long run.
OK started this mod but I'm wondewring how do you change or upgrade your robe. I'm at lvl 4 with the basic +1 robe?

One of the best class specific mods as well as the best Eastern Asia setting I have seen.

I had forgotten NWN for a little while when I switched computers, but I recently started playing and getting modules again. Your mod was one of two that I remembered and loved well enough to search out and get again (and it was a pretty tough search with all the modules on the vault now, haha). Needless to say, I like this mod a lot, and hope all is going well with you =).

I found a very round-about solution to my problem.

I've rescued the samurai from the ship and had been told of someone waiting for me on top of the mountain when I decided to tie up the loose end of the demon door in the forest. The Devil Killer and my monk were neatly killing everything and had gone through three vestries when we hit the vestry of death. We killed all the zombies and as we left, the scripting event that removed the polymorph effects activated and the game crashed. I started up the game and after the fight I cheated and just used the cancel polymorph option from the radial dial and tried again, it crashed. I started the game up, repeated except this time I decided to rest to remove the polymorph effect from the NPC, no good that seems to be the only room in the entire damn mod you can't rest in as I'd never been restricted from doing so before. So I decided to simply kill the NPC, I did so and then used the ring to try and bring her back, that made the game crash. So after starting up again I went into stealth and let the zombies kill the NPC (which actually required me to use the cheats to lower her CON to 3 and raise one of the zombies STR to 56 after three minutes of them not hitting her). I then lowered the "enhanced" zombie's STR to 10 and I killed the lot of them, used the ring...and the game crashed. Can this quest be completed?

I have his contact info but I don't want to give it out. The last time I talked to him he said he was still going to finish part 2. That was quite some time ago. I posted this if anyone wants to scroll down. I don't want to bug him about the module. I figure if he wanted to let anyone know he would. We will just have to settle for only part 1.
As I mentioned a few months ago I still find the mountain part unplayable at least for a char level 4 or even 5. Worse these guys are actually respawning!
BTW sneak attack since to work only once and a while w/o that even shuriken +1 are not very effective. May be a new Bioware bug.
Also regarding this part it is possible to learn what are the creatures weaknesses yet unless you have spells I found no related weapons to take them (the spirits) down.
And yes I do try to take them one at a time.
I would recommend to start this mod with a level 4-6 char to make it less tedious early on (1rst and 3rd quest). As it is I can't give it a high score.

It's been over a year and I still await the sequel.
This is one of the best modules ever made for NWN and THE best module for a monk character.
If you ever wanted to play a monk, download this module now!
