Description
This is the first module in a planned series of three. The Kales Rangers series is designed specifically for the often neglected Ranger class. It requires ranger abilities such as tracking, animal handling and setting traps. This series is intended for solo play only and is focused on story and NPC depth over replay or lots of side quests. Synopsis: It seems as if fate in the form of a major storm has brought you to the fishing village of Crimor. When you arrive you find the town to be on edge due to recent events. As you learn more of the town's troubles you begin to unravel a part of your own past. I now have combined the NWN 1.32 and NWN 1.29 compatable versions in the same zip. Be sure to check the installation instructions in the documentation.

A nice module with some specialized things for Rangers.
Pros
1 - Interesting tracking system.
2 - a couple of spots where Animal Empathy was useful.
3 - encouraged some out of the box thinking. The Bear Quest for example seemed unbeatable until I figured out how to use terrain to only fight 1-3 of the enemy at a time though that seems to contradict the Bear Quest but no problems happened.
Cons
1 - Cannot change Merista(?)'s inventory. I had a case where she ran out of ammo but wouldn't switch to a melee weapon in combat, she just kept trying to fire without arrows. I had plenty but couldn't provide any to her. Also there is an option to ask her to remove traps but if selected she never does.
2 - Poison creatures do seem a bit too much.
Odd Things
1 - The module doesn't seem limited to Good characters, there's no penalties for playing Evil or being Evil while making Good choices to fool people.
2 - Stag Quest, I had to use Animal Empathy twice on the Disease Carrier before it animated to follow but even then it didn't follow normally, it would walk in place and only when I moved away enough would it "teleport" to my location like henchmen sometimes do.
3 - Stag Quest, once the Alpha Wolf got out without me pulling the lever.
4 - Stag & Bear Quest, I get the keys but not how I would expect, it doesn't match what I am told to do.
5 - While looking for the missing child, there is a dead Gnoll in the secret passage but you cannot tell if it has anything because it registers as an enemy to attack, though if you choose attack, nothing happens.
6 - When reuniting the two children, the spirit guide appears to give advice on your decision after the decision is made, either the guide's conversation should come before or during the conversation with the kids before the decision is made.

This was a decent but not outstanding module. On the plus side, the dream world was interesting, and the tracking system was a neat idea. On the other hand, the village was under-developed and uninteresting, the tracking system got a bit tedious, and the combats were difficult enough to be a bit frustrating. The sequel is much better, and with the short length of this module and the abrupt ending, I think it would have been better to do them both as one module.

I liked this one, even though the sequel is the real deal. Wonderful - and well implemented - idea to have a ranger-only module!

this is a great module. as for all you people that are having a hard time. why dont you just delete ALL your RPG games, i mean come on. it tells you like 10 time to make sure you use the tracking tool. i swear i think some people just click past all the annoying words so they can get to the battles faster and then they get all mad when they cant figure something out. these are the same people that will play a ranger with heavy armor and a bastard sword in each hand and the complain cuz rangers suck and dont do enuff damage.

I loved playing through this module to the second one (I'm so looking forward to the third one), which I'm currently immersed in. My only complaint is that the music files for certain areas didn't work and actually caused a tone to be generated even after I completely exited NWN. After rebooting my system I've had no problems at all (hence the 9.5 and not a perfect 10).
I hope you have the third one coming soon! _________________________ Subsiste Sermonem Statim

Great mod, great series. I think part 2 is better with more custom content, but this is still a great adventure.

Started originally with a dex ranger but had a game stopper in KR2. I had used an older version fro KR1 and most recent for KR2. So when I start KR2 Meristas is not with me.
Next time around played with a str ranger and expertise where needed enjoyed the mod.
Played hardcore BUT when Bioware were looking at the ranger they saw him as a bow specialist and to play him in easy/normal mode ie no attacks of opportunity when using ranged weapons.
Anyway finished as a 5th lvl ranger and enjoyed the mod

It's a good thing I started out with a Ranger/Rogue (3/1) instead of a new character. I didn't find the combat too hard, only that I wouldn't want to try it with a 1st level character. Maybe it's me being a wimp, or maybe it's the 3.5 rules. It was quite smooth anyway.
I liked the fact that I didn't have to start from 1st level if I didn't want to. I didn't like the invisible traps in the dream, and I suppose the whole test could have been more... practical. It's a strange dream that makes use of your non-astral equipment.

To everyone having problems with the stag quest: I solved it by realising the wolf first, before killing the disease carrier.
Hell, one of the most well known assassins is Artemis Entreri, and even he isn't all that evil( at least not anymore, read the Sellswords series, seems he isnt such a bad guy afterall =) _________________________ So what if I tied Billy's legs to the flag pole and handed him a hacksaw and told him he had 5 minutes to find a cure for the anthrax I put in his milk.
Sounds like a great module. One question though, is it bad to multiclass in this? Like, are there penalties? Although I like the ranger class I rarely ever play a pure ranger char, I always multiclass into a type of char that would resemble an evil Drizzit, with 6 ranger, 10 shadowdancer, 24 assassin at level 40. Makes for a really nasty bloke, epic dodge and 50% concealment with triple death attacks. That also means the character must be eveil(which I don't really get, the description in the manual is bullcrap, assassins can be good too. Go play Art of Death - Back in Black if you don't believe me and shutup) Would having an evil alignment be bad too? _________________________ So what if I tied Billy's legs to the flag pole and handed him a hacksaw and told him he had 5 minutes to find a cure for the anthrax I put in his milk.
ok... PLEASE SOMEONE HELP--in the spirit quest i cant complete the deer quest i killed diseased the diseased deer, let the wolf kill other diseased deers, cant find the key like in wolf and cougar quest? the red light still says i must make the herd more safe???? please help

I've run into a problem that I ran into when the game first came out.
I've cleaned out the area beneath the Stirgewood as required and after going through it for the fifth time to ensure that I didn't miss anything, it is not triggering as done.
Since I had a savegame from just entering the forest, I reran it and came up with the same thing. It will not register as completed to the Entity. the only "living" beings down there are my character and my companion and nothing esle. I did note that whenever we passed a particular dead Squealer(?) (just beyond the Overseer's area), she'd ask about attacking it. So I'm thinking that there's a glitch with that one. How can I get this to trigger as done? _________________________ We are all born ignorant, but one must work to remain ignorant.

I noted that you've updated the pair of mods... which I've Dl'd and am playing. 8) I would, like a lot of others, when's three coming out??? And have you given thought to redoing this series in NWN2?? _________________________ We are all born ignorant, but one must work to remain ignorant.
don't know why, but the game crashes after 3 minutes of playing. any clue?

Nice first half of a mod. The puzzles seemed hard, but become much easier once you understand the ranger mindset. Really should be merged with KR2 into a single mod.
BTW, it has some wrong word usage (GW clearly ran a spell check, but not a grammar check).
A great mod as I've played this in the past, but I think it needs an update for patch 1.68 or for CEP2.0?
My rangers chars head is missing in game.

What a great mod.
This is the first time i,ve played as a Ranger and I'am impressed ,the tracking skill is brilliant, you should put it on the the vault so other builders can use it (why did'nt Bioware think of something like this).
The story is good, and the interaction with the henchmen is second to none.
I'am off to play chapter 2.

Rating applies to the series as a whole. This was the first third party module(s) I played after the Bioware NWN. I've played ~100 modules since then and in my humble opinion, none have supassed it. With the final instalment on the horizon, life is worth living again :')

Great module! I just learned about NWN Vault and I have always loved the ranger class. Thanks for making such a good module for rangers!
