A very fun, small module. Areas are not that big and enemies vary, thus fighting does not get boring. Interesting henchman with a unique class. Wish he had more things to say regarding the progress of adventure.

few things:
- olive slime looks awful, it should be replaced with bioware version as should at least some of the wyverns.
- mobs descriptions - some are missing
- henchman is buggy, does not listen to the orders. Although the concept of him is very good. Unfortunately he has nothing to talk with me.

Yet again, and since all new-comers seem to be racking the vault with low-quality modules voted perfect 10's, I believe subjective grades based on what I like rather than a strict voting ruleset is my right as well. Here goes a little balancing in this madness.

Posted by Jedijax at 2009-08-31 12:26:43    Voted 10.00 on 01/01/11
Whatever happened to my vote? Well, no matter, since I think the module could be updated, specially the creatures, and I hated the henchman, and since I think it could have easily been included in the Heart of Winter module by the same author, further developing that story's interesting henchwoman, I guess this grade is fair enough.

Leaving the fact this is a conversion behind, one must admit it is an outstanding module. I usually write long reviews, but since WeAreAllKosh has already done his, and he is a reviewer after my own heart, I will just vote and comment TOTLM is one of my "personal", "persistent" modules. It is the first in a long, chronologic list of modules.

Posted by gpudney at 2008-12-08 01:40:28
Thank's Krickerd. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

For your info the original infinity engine TotL was not released as a for sale expansion pack, it was in fact a free download one - I think Bioware did it after a few people weren't that happy about the length of Heart of Winter.

Merrick is smoking crack, the mod was excellent! I never played the original (don't know how I missed it - played Icewind Dale and Heart of Winter). The events were scripted well and everything made sense.

*******Spoiler*********

I got lost in the crypts at first but eventually found my way through to put the 4 watchers to rest.

I thought the combat was maybe a little too easy on Normal setting but a little too risky on Hardcore (Derek got turned to stone once, glad I didn't save that). Started as a 12th level cleric with pretty decent equipment.

Overall a very good mod.

I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy the module Merrick, though I'm intrigued as to why you bothered to download it when it was clearly stated as a remake of the original Icewind expansion?

This is a "cheap copy" mod. Sorry man but this mod is waste of time.

A nice little dungeon crawl with a good story woven through it. For the concepts, the story, and the custom item descriptions, Black Isle has to get most of the credit. But as far as conversions go, this could have been a lot, lot worse. Rather than just letting what Black Isle created do all the work, so to speak, the author made sure to build the module up well and polish it up nicely.

My only complaint is that the final battle does cross the border into overpowering. It is the final battle, sure, but endless Time Stops executed almost every other action in real time seemed excessive. It took me many reloads with maximum preparations taken every time, so it's a battle that relies too much on luck.

Overall a fun module.

Had a lot of fun playing this mod. I played the Heart of Winter first and then read about this mod in the comments so gave it a try. I played with a Fighter6/Rogue6. Only battle that took me a lot of reloads was the beholders, but eventually got through it. One puzzling thing was the henchman kept trying to run off after a fight to another fight and I had to use follow to stop him. Quirky, but not enough to ruin the fun.

Nice module, I really enjoyed it. I'm a sucker for puzzles and riddles so you won't hear me complain :). I especially liked the one with the gems. I haven't played the Icewind Dale expansion so I can't comment on whether it was a faithful conversion but going through some posts, apparently, it remained true to the original.

Some glitches that I encountered:I liked my henchman but he frequently entered a killing spree, attacking friends and foes alike. Though faithful to his character :p, it was rather annoying. Sometimes after some fights he kept on running to attack the closest hostile and I had to command him to follow me. The first area leading to the dungeon had some levers that opened the doors to the cages. I entered one cage and accidentally closed the door and I couldn't get out, unlocking it or bashing it didn't work either so I had to reload. Also, I read your posts concerning the ending but I got to say that it was a little abrupt. Maybe you could work something out. Teleporting to the inn would had been more gratifying. Other than that everything worked out fine. Solid story, challenging battles for my fighter/rogue char, a pleasant way to spend an evening. Well done :).

Hi again Mirgalen,

I think I just left a message for you on my SoakJ page!

Amazingly enough you are the first person that spotted the fact that that quest is in both modules, well at least said something about it anyway! I shamelessly stole the puzzle idea from Trials of the Luremaster for my SOAKJ module (altering it very slightly!).

The big floaty eye creatures are beholders, and the making you go to sleep is a special ability of theirs.. though I've never known it to make the henchmen disappear - that sounds like a new bug. Thanks for letting me know about that one, if I get chance I'll take a look and fix it.

Thanks again for your comments!

I have just finished replaying this great module with a CoT. It was a bit easy after "Shadows of a King's Justice" except for a strange bug that wouold make the Barbarian vanish. Gee that Luremaster sure looked familiar (yeah, four knights you said. Didn't I meet you in a graveyard before?)

* Spoiler *

They are places in the games with big floating creatures with many eyes. They can make a character fall asleep (not sure if this a bug or WAI feature). The trouble is if you fall asleep the henchmen will vanish for good w/o any message log (your henchmen is dead or something like that).

 English is my first language but I dont get the puzzle... and I too cannot open one door in the temple crypts....
Glenn you mention a walkthru on your website but I dont see a link???

Enjoyed it very much except for some minor things:
- the first riddle may be a problem for non native English speakers
- had to reload/replay the last battle to unequip henchmen

I never played the IWD version, but if it was this entertaining, it's too bad that I didn't.

This was one of the most unique mods I have played in a long time. I loved the henchman, right up to the point when he trashed my alignment by killing everything that moved. The riddles and puzzels were challenging, but didn't force me to check for spoilers. The storyline was very well done, everything fit, maybe not at the time, but in hindsight. I would very much like to play another mod of this style.

The 2 puzzles in the crypt and castle were very unique.
Nice mixture of monsters and the crystal quest was a challenge itself.

If you're stuck there is a walkthrough on my webpage, listed above. It's just a bit quicker than waiting for me to respond!

**SPOILERS**

You need to complete the crypt and the puzzle within to unlock the door to the castle.

Hi,

How do I get into the castle? I've done the 4 towers, got all yellow scroll like things, did most of the hidden crypt that I can (can't find the keys to unlock the NW door and top door on the east wall.)
What else do I need to do?

Thanks,
Steve

Unfortunately that is highly unlikely. I haven't been near the toolset for months. I have two other unfinished modules that will probably never see the light of day as well.

I just don't have the time to spend building that I used to.

You never know though, if I get the time I might go back to the unfinished modules and the plans to combine the two IWD modules and finish them all off.

Wow! Just noticed that. Thanks, your support is much appreciated. :)
