Description
The story of your life is yet a short one. You have been raised in Raleigh as the adopted child of a farmer. Raleigh is a small farming town in the middle of nowhere and not important enough for appearing on all but the most detailed maps. But nevertheless, you have always liked the life there. The people are a most friendly sort of folks, there is no poverty and no crime in Raleigh. As an orphaned child, you could have done worse. You thought you couldn't get much luckier when you recently even found love in the form of the elven girl Deliah. More than just one young man in your age envies you for dating the prettiest girl in town. You are not overly concerned about what happens outside the town gates of Raleigh. You think that 'big politics' can not disturb your humble life in that humble town. Unfortunately, you are about to find out that you are deadly wrong on that and that fate has chosen another path for you than leading a farmer's life...

I just finished the second part. This was a really advanced module for the time in which it was written. It included several elements that were way ahead of that time.

Very playable and engrossing. Could make a full 10 with a bit more polish. Thank you very much Fantus!

Just played it, feels too much long-winded, could be shortened. Too big areas with too much loot. Also:
Farmer John quest bug(asking for work after having it done) ends abruptly conversation
Church of one truth sells "elven boots" - lol?
If you decide to attack Lenton's inquisition forces they keep hitting you zeros and you lose control of PC
henchman are bugged although they are nice addition.

Sometimes when you got hit too many times in the row the animation showing damage still plays for some time after the last actual hit occurred, this could be the case.

Ha ha think I found a very strange bug my sorceror 6 chose to fight when deliah was killed and over 6 minutes of missing he finally killed all the archer's but kept getting hit for 0 damage.

Story concept very good kept me enthralled untill I had to peel through ten unnecessary layers of the abyss with too many simillar repetive monster encounters. Way too many lootable corpses with the same equipment over and over again leading to constant trips to the store to unload stuff. Loot should have been reserved for bosses and sub bosses with minimal loot for regular soldiers. This slowed the adventuring down especially at ironside. Overall i loved the story and the linear nature.

Excellent mod overall.
Very tough in parts, some bugs still there.
Would have been nice to have a little more dialogue with henchies, but we cant all be satisfied all the time :p
Keep up the good work :)

I had that issue, so loaded a save before that and found that you need to make sure all of you are on the steps before you leave her workshop.
Also, keep stopping to regroup as you run back to the base, and the same in the base tunnels.

I got the weapons engineer out of the barracks, but she did not follow me to the resistance base under Calina. I talked to Elvewen and he acted like she was there. I couldn't continue. I went back to her, got her to follow me, and he still just greets me. Anything I can do? I really like the mod so far and want to continue it.

The beginning of the mod is great and motivating. Sadly, this is not true for the rest. The maps are really BIG and you need to walk long distances. Normally I like that and do a lot of exploration. In this case, I grew tired of it and had to force myself to play on. There are tons of monsters to fight, but that's basically it. It is not like you're going into this shady corner of the forest to discover something interesting and fight a few critters...no there is nothing interesting but another mob of dire bears and dire wolfs. So to say the fights are not rewarding (even the loot is crapy). I also had some difficulties with henchmen spawning double or disappearing completly during the game. I don't know if this is just a problem of mine or a general bug, but it certainly caused a lot of disorientation. The dialogues are well written but few in number (ok, this is to be expected 'cause it is stated as combat-oriented module). It can be beaten with a rogue, but it is hard as hell and I spend most of the later parts of the game running.

I just started this mod and everyone is concealed, even the npc's. I am playing a wizard and I had to prc some scrolls of true seeing so that I can target the enemies. Orcs, goblins and the bandit caves were all concealed and I could not target them with any spells until I read a true seeing scroll. Is it because I used prc on this? I am running the latest version of NWN, 1.69. I may have to restart this so that I can use a character with a necklace of true seeing.

WeAreAllKosh: I completed the module long ago with a wizard -- not even remotely what you're calling an "SSFP" character without undue difficulty. So I can't say that I agree with your extremely harsh criticism of this mostly excellent module.

Fantus is known for making very difficult H&S modules with excellent stories behind them, and this module is listed with a "H&S Heavy" rating. Those are things that players are expected by community custom to take into account when deciding to download, play, and vote on modules.

Anyway, I agree with Steve Savicki. The module requires some work fixing up the henchman scripting when I played it (it tended to spawn duplicates at times), but as I remember it the module had a very good story and sense of adventure to it. Voting accordingly.

I really enjoyed it. I agree with some of the posts that the beginning was too difficult for a first level anything, so I restarted the mod with a 3rd level fighter equipped with +2 level stuff (plate, shield, sword) and a crapload of potions of various sorts. It was challenging even then until late in the game. Good job! Spoiler: BTW, the orc merchant late in the game was right on time!

Lots of problems with henchmen. Their script is problematic. Too difficult at the beginning. Later on things were more balanced for my fighter but I can't imagine if this is playable by other classes. The module is hack and slash heavy but a little role-playing would had been nice. Lengthy maps with numerous foes. Somewhere near the middle I just grew tired of the vastness of the areas and the repetitive encounters.

Mod needs to be updated to current henchmen scripting, but other than that, it's playable.

Unplayable for any PC that isn't an SSFP (sword + shield + full plate) warrior.

I don't want to hear about how it 'might be easiest' for fighters or how it was tested with a Rogue and a Druid. The existence of a gamebreaking bug is evidence that this module was not tested at all.

I tried to clear out the bandit caves with a 3rd level Ranger (hardly an anemic class) and the Monk henchman. The difficulty was ridiculous. Investigating in the Toolset I learned that one of the groups consists of an 8th level rogue, a 3rd level rogue, and two archers. That's with a -3rd- level character. I can't imagine that even the SSFP could have cleared that without either respawning or a lot of lucky rolling. When that's the standard of the module's difficulty, there is a problem.

I'm now actually getting into the habit of using dm_heal, because this amped up challenge is the norm with modules rather than the exception.

Couldn't any of these module makers have just mimicked HoTU's difficulty? The expansion got nothing but rave reviews! No one thought it was a horrible product. But these mod makers, of course, thought it was too easy. And those of us who happen to like touching options other than the Weapon Master PrC suffer for it.

I had a great time with this, NWN 1.68 and no glitches with Gen. Lenton or most anywhere else. Yes there were some extra hench copies at the elf desert camp but I just left them alone. Even saved a few extra henchs from that camp as a roleplay choice but had to let them go before getting imprisoned to correctly continue the story. Plenty of H&S just as the description says but the levels were different enough to keep me happy all the way to the end.

I enjoyed this module. The beginning was sad, but sets the scene well. I was glad to be able to free the seige engineer who was being forced to work for the enemy.

Good: Nice story, beautiful romance. The mod seems to be almost free of bugs.

Not so good: Most areas are too large, with nothing but repetitive and boring H&S. Also too many enemies in some areas. No roleplaying, no dialogue choices, nearly no side quests, not much use of the journal.

The newer mods of the author (Fantus) called "Lords of Darkness" are much better and a "must play".

I'm currently playing this module. The story is good, however there seems to be way too much creatures... what is it with the 20 lions, panthers etc waiting for me? It seemed a bit too unreal...but still a very good story!

I just played Defender of the Faith, which has been around for awhile now. I just wanted you to know I really enjoyed it (even though there were a few minor bugs). I hope someday you update the tilesets so its compatible with HOU, but I really had a great time. Thanks for the effort.

Ok. I read through some of the other comments and found some other people who had the same problem I'm having.

After the battle with Lenton, I dunno if you can call it a battle. Mylene and my character hit him a couple times and he faded away. Left nothing on the ground.

I was thinking of using kharsis' solution. But I'm not familiar with spawning in items. I think I have the key's ID, UpstairsKey. What do I do next?

more henchie straneness:

In desert camp have jennifer and ariel second copies. So now I have 2 of each in party... :)

Henchman strangeness:

After jennifer joins, other henchmen leave and kathlyn refuses to rejoin. "I refuse to work for you". The others also do not have the arrows pointing at them on right side and do not show on map until change area.

Ok anytime I try to get a Henchman they all just fade away. Why and how do I fix it?

Posted by darthiera27 at 2005-08-30 10:09:33
Ok I have read all the comments and I want to know how I get past the first part at the temple. It just Freezes and I can't fight or anything. Help!

OK... Do you mean I've reached the end of the module so far? Or, have I reached an impass because of game version conflict?
