Description
"Mystra is troubled but can not say why. Shar hates Mystra and gives the assassin Cyric a black cloak. The assassin steals upon the White Queen. She can't see him gliding through the shadows. The sword screams. The White Queen falls. The tree burns and thrashes in agony. Branches break. Branches twist and grow together....the Weave falls into shadow."
-Alaundo's prophecy,The death of Mystra.

"It is the doom of men that they never know quite enough wisdom, until it is too late."
-Elminster of Shadowdale

Virtually none of Faerun will remain unaffected by the Spellplague. Thousands of mages will be destroyed or go insane. With Mystra's death, the Weave, the universal structure of arcane magic, will convulse. Toril will be forever changed.

What is to come will be darker still...the Shadovar.

Empires will fall and new ones will rise. Many a hero will be lost to us. Only to be replaced by another champion. This is a dark time that needs, valor, might and courage.

Ok, strike the above comment. The first time I tried the approach, the party was mounted on horses "borrowed" from the Zhentian camp. I just tried to gain entrance at Hillsfar again, this time on foot, and triggered the correct conversational options. Don't know why that would make a difference, but I'm in now.

So far I am really enjoying the module, but I appear to be stuck at the gates of Hillsfar. Although I was told to use the generals name, or offer a bribe, I don't seem to be getting either as a conversation option with either guard. Any idea what I must of skipped to get this reaction?

Rand Al' Thor good to hear from you! Have not seen your name on much of the posts lately. Hope you like it. I did not want to spoil the book for anyone. I know a lot of people were waiting for the paperback. I spent a painful $30.00 for the hardcover but it was worth every cent. :) Wait until you read Guantlgrym! I was so stunned after I put the book down I did four shots of whiskey!!!!

One last thing.....story, plot, and theme are all mine and copyrighted. It's an original story. I can't even begin to understand why you would write a novel of comments about the game having elements of TOM when as clear as day up above I give credit to Luke Scull for scripts and layouts. SSSSHEEEEESHHHH!!!

This is by far a best seller, but it's not the mess your claiming it to be. This does give me the drive to make future mods even better though. I promise you that. From the way it sounds you had a lousy exp with the mod, for that I am sorry. That's not what I intended or am trying to do here. We shall see what we shall see.

Well eggerfry it seems you had an eyefull to say about the mod. Though I do thank you for the amount of feedback, even though it was a bit overzealous, I take some insult at calling the mod a reskin. From the get go I never kept it a secret that the mod was inspired by Tyrants of the Moonsea. Cutscenes and scripts were a major factor for me in this mod. Being this was the first time doing them. If taking an author's work and learning from it or making it slightly different is a crime then that is something half the members of the community are guilty of I am afraid.

As for the bugs they will be fixed in time and I thank you for bringing them to my attention. Just trying to give a new twist to things. But saying to skip this mod altogether is just simply rude!

Take a pretty girl, cut her up into pieces, dye each of the pieces a different color, stitch her back together and animate her -- and you've got something that resembles the monstrosity this module is shambling around the nwvault. "Into the Darkness" is scarcely more than a global reskin of Alazandar's excellent "Tyrants of the Moonsea," with the monster and character names changed and some new, largly incompatible, story elements tacked onto the top of it.

The dialogs are chaotic and messy to the point of being incomprehensible, because the stories don't match up well enough, because half the time the builder hasn't even bothered to change the references to characters originally in TotM, and because his grammar and spelling are just plain careless. The amount of treasure given out is way OTT (lvl 30-60 items? For a lvl 15 campaign?? C'mon!) and the NPC henchmen stats are equally OTT (skills and even ability scores in the 50's -- literally).

Every cloud has a silver lining, however, and this thunderhead does have a few points of argent. First of all, the few side-quests the builder added to the original were generally fun and well-integrated, adding to, rather than detracting from, the entertainment. Secondly, the actual reskinning is terrific; the textures are sumptuous, the designs are thoughtfully conceived and carefully executed, the colors are well-done, and the mood created by use of these is excellent. It's obvious the builder spent a great deal of time developing these new textures, and I wonder why he didn't just post them to the vault as a hak-pack instead of using them to reskin a module and call it his own? (Note: there was one problem with amulets and rings; see my previous post.)

Levels noted in the information about the module are "15-40". I don't know if this is the case because I didn't finish the module. It's quite possible, however, because I was leveling about once per hour, much faster than in the original module, where I started at lvl 15 and finished at lvl 18 after about 12 hours of play.

Summarizing for this module, my advice to the builder would be either to (1) revisit this module, cleaning up all of the myriad errors and then reposting it honestly, as a reskin of "Tyrants of the Moonsea" ; or (2) write your own story -- from scratch. I personally think option (2) is a better choice, because it's obvious you've got some good ideas, and I think the ravenloft story you would've written had you tried would've been worth playing -- as long as you spent the time necessary to proofread your dialogs (or have somebody proofread them) and debug the rest.

My advice to the player would be to skip this particular incarnation, and play the original module instead, which is far and away one of the best on the vault.

DETAILED BUG LIST
-----------------------------
(This isn't all of them, I stopped playing the mod halfway through)
- Many, many misspellings and grammatical errors in the dialogs
- Malika redbeard has no head
- Jhaele silvermane's voice is the (male) innkeeper's voice from TotM
- The OOC references to other modules during the dialogs is REEALLY annoying. These may be useful in a readme, but not in the flow of conversation for fantasy roleplaying.
- Why are lvl 60 items just lying around on the riverbank?
- My character supposedly loved arzara? Hmm... I assure you, my character is NOT lesbian... there are also numerous places where the token isn't used, and the author just assumes the pc is male. Perhaps the eventuality of a female character should be dealt with in the dialogs?
- Completed quest entry for shattered memories mentioning 'sharylin lockleaf' (from original module) and a non-existent conv I had w/her in which I'd agreed to hunt down the 'order'
- How can arthrogate be in 2 places at once? (passed out on the floor in his room and in the conference room a few doors down)?
- Shaerl's voiceset is original (male) voiceset
- The Bron from Alazandro's module is mentioned in numerous places
- You've placed static hostiles (driders and drow) in the jail level of the tower where mourngrym is held. Mourngrym therefore runs off to fight the baddies outside the cell right after the conversation starts and gets himself summarily killed. Voilà - end of quest. >:( Furthermore, there is no way to stop this because of being in cutscene mode. A better solution would have been to spawn the creatures in later.
- Many references to the original character 'bennart waters' from original module, rather than mourngrym. Also many references to lashan, not mourngrym's daughter.
- Conv bug for grimswold - keeps referring to shaerl as "he"
- Journal bug: grimswold is not a drow
- Journal bug: entire entry basically gibberish for finding shaerl after rescuing her father ['go to Meet'? 'talk to wife'?]
- Journal bug: claims I bested strahd in combat, but we hadn't even fought yet
- Conv bug w/raistlin: outside of hillsfar he mentions the feel of foreign magic and asks what I think it's from, but the options given are for the std npc conv [id my items, part ways, etc.]
- Conv bug: Carolina, whom I've never met, talks to me as if I have (left over from original mod)
- Conv bug: lord orgauth is not grazkahn, and he is human, not a slaad lord (left over from original mod)
- Conv bug: [lord orgauth] mentions kazz'temmet, character in original mod but not this one
- Conv bug: [Lockheed] infinite xp can be earned because the conv is not flagged and the dragon doesn't leave
- Two map pins 'to hillsfar' in shind road east
- The conv between the old man just outside the gates of hillsfar is so confusing it gives the wrong impression for moral choices (this was clear in the original mod)
- Conv bug: [dounalis] 'why force my companions to remain outside?' => conv breaks
- I'm supposed to have killed maalthiir, this should not be taken for granted, but should be introduced into the story somehow
- Red plume guard to temple district has invisible armor (i.e., doesn't appear)
- 'Kalor onehand' is left over name from original mod, confuses conv because he is not dounalis
- Dounalis asks me to meet him in the 'diamond in the dung' pub (left over from original mod). Should be the 'new red dragon' pub.
- Conv bug [tarl]: refers to characters in original mod, 'elf' and 'blizzard'
- Conv bug [ren]: refers to character in original mod, 'father garth'
(I gave up here)

appearance problems
-------------------
i just fired up this mod, looking forward to playing. looks like you've done some fancy 2da work here. unfortunately it breaks a few things. the icon appearances of all of my character's jewelry and all of her traps are wrong. the traps all look like spike traps, and the jewelry -- both rings and amulets -- have the standard dull-gray '0' model for everything. converting the traps to your icons is easy: just set the traps and recover them again. however, there's no clear way to modify the appearances of the jewelry. changing the model type for rings and amulets back to 'simple' [i.e., 0] in baseitems.2da fixes the problem, but i assume you made this change for a reason, such as creating new items w/3-part appearances, and my fix would break that... this is pretty much a show-stopper for me, there's no way i can play w/every single item having the same appearance; i don't want to spend years searching for the right item when i'm in the middle of combat. how can i put the appearances back to the standard appearance w/o breaking anything?

Fantastic mod! The storyline and dialogue was excellent. There are a few bugs which I notified the author about, but overall very playable. There are many great cutscenes. A lot of time went into this mod and it is very worth checking out. A must play.

Note: I would start the game a little higher than 15th level or have excellent equipment (first battle is pretty tough).

Hey Ken just e-mailed me and said he loved the vid Udasu. He is having a hard time getting on the Vault for some reason because he is in Mexico. Great fight sequences and not bad animation either. Jarlaxle's hat needs some work though. Do you have anymore of these? It was really cool. Ken liked the Artemis fight. We both agreed Regis looked too cute though.

Just started playing, looks awesome. I've got a problem though... some of the graphics are messed up... like the new heads (probably the kotor ones) are missing and one of the armors found near the beginning of the module is missing legs.

Any ideas...? I used to occasionally get problems like this a few years ago... but no recently.

Besides don't let that be a hang up. The crypts under Shadowdale are only a sidequest. The rest of the game gets even better and is free of bugs. This one is a must. I felt like I was playing Baldur's Gate series all over again........only this was better!!!!

Gather all of the items (all four of them) return to the statue. The vauriables scripted will register you have all four items and...presto! The door will open. It did for me at least. Remember the door is glowing red. When it stops glowing, that means you can go open it. Hope this helps Luspr. :)

Dear Luspr and Seekwhence,

The door to the crypts can be opened. Just find the four symbols of Bane. I did it. The fourth symbol is behind the.........

Elventree is very big and confusing. I am sure it does not help matters any that an army of Zhentarim are attacking. These locations are unlocked after the big battle. They were for me at least. It seems they are unlocked after certain choices too. So if it appears you do not give a damn about anyone but yourself, don't expect to be invited to the big battle and the Soul Tree tower.

So this is the latest mod featuring the dark elf ranger? Not to mention a cast of some of the best Forgotten Realms characters. I have only played half the mod thus so far, and boy am I hooked! You have fore-shadowed the coming of the Spellplague excellently here. Some more azure fire waves would have been nice to see, but you got your point across and that's all that matters. I really felt hope was fleeting in the first half and this makes me want to continue and change the outcome. Your personalizaton of Drizzt and the gang jumps right out of the books and makes me feel as if I am reading the next part in the life of Drizzt. (It also makes me feel uneasy too. I don't want to be put out of a job.) The vote I have given should be higher. Much higher. However, one should not be judged by a mere number or should his actions or works. Especially when he or she knows his own self worth. Though the voting system on the vault is good for many things, I am quite sure a simply thank you to Ken Lamella would go a long way too. So in saying that........thank you Ken Lamella. For keeping this old dog entertained again and taking the time out of your life to share this with us.

Ps. I appreciate you warning players about spoilers in the game in regards to the Ghost King. Very considerate. I hear that the book is really good, huh?

Crypts under Shadowdale - Statue of Bane.....

The placeable cannot be interacted with in game, and therefore the door cannot be opened. I've had trouble with this placeable myself.

I have to say, this is a hell of a weird mod, and I don't get it. Still enjoyable enough :-D

I am in a similar situation to what Korrgarr posted. I am stuck in Elventree and can't get out. I received the key to open the gates presumably to reach the the Soul Tree Tower but when I open the gates, I can go no further - there is no path leading away from the gates! Also there seems to be a location called the "House of Harp" but I can't find the path to get there! What's going on? Am I missing some plot or location trigger for both events?

Dear Sharp,

I have found conflicting versions of Neverwinter's fate. Some say it is completely destroyed, as in off the map and others say there was vast destruction and the city is only in ruin like Luskan. I am going to have to go novel hunting and locate those books you turned me onto. That should explain things better. Of course it's going to have to wait, until I get back from my trip in Mexico. Be good friend. I will try to check my e-mails when possible. When I return I shall release a boon of mods for NWN. :)
