Description
The nation of Sterich has always had to deal with the dangers of the Giant population of the Crystalmist mountains which make up their western border. Recently, however, the Giants have begun raiding the land of Sterich in large numbers, and the attacks appear to be more coordinated than is normal for such dull brutes. Several Giant warlords have emerged and they have been rallying their people in a genocidal war against humankind. To make matters worse, a fearsome spell has befallen the capital city of Istivin. A call has been put forth across the land for the bravest and most powerful adventurers to punish the miscreant Giants. This classic PnP conversion is the sequel to A1-4 Slavers (Scourge of the Slave Lords), but playing the first module in the series is not required.

Thanks Nol Drek for a very good mod. Certainly a PnP classic in my book.

Challenging combat on HC with a 13/3 Wizard/Thief -- just how I like it. I advanced 3 lvls by the end. Only one henchmen is allowed, so I upgraded his items. I didn't think the treasure was too far out of whack nor did I think the rooms were too big as was reported previously.

Adding backstory to prisoners and dialogue for slaves would have been a nice touch. Thanks again!

Again, lack of quest ending journal entry.

Poor conversion.

There is nothing like the AD&D Ranger (Giant slayer) in the 3rd edition. There is nothing in this module to address this issue (a special giant slayer weapon given to the player for instance). A couple of rangers should have a blast taking down these giants. Instead given the poor henchmen that cannot be properly equipped the game was as boring and frustrating as it can possibly be. why put henchmen in a module if they die during almost every fights?

Saw this on the overlooked mod list and gave it a try...seriously the most unpleasant time I've had playing a user-made mod.

Positive - everything seems to work, no bugs
Not So Positive - pretty much everything else. No story, uninteresting battles, lots of running across empty maps (notice the plural there), poor layout/map design (though I don't know if that is the mod author's fault or the original PnP author's fault). I enjoy a good hack and slash module, but this was just not fun, in any way. I never played PnP D&D so maybe I'm missing the nostalgia thing with this module, but I don't understand all the high votes. I don't want to trash somebody for providing free content, but this was just not good. How this compares to truly good Hall of Fame content is a mystery to me.

And, well, voting 10 for your own stuff is so 2004. Good thing you posted it in 2003. I should get used to that behavior, but I never do. Note that really good authors never do that.

Posted by fardoche77 at 2008-08-28 18:47:19    Voted 7.50 on 08/28/08
I'm just finished with this module. I must say it's slightly disappointing but what did I expect? RP? No. Fulfilling SP experience? No... I should get MP buddies. Was the module bug-free? Yes, as far as I know. Was there endless trekking across wast spaces? Unfortunately Yes.

You'll say: dude, it's a hack n slash, it just has to be balanced for combat. But was it? At first, yeah, but at the end I was great cleaving drow a dozen a minute. Not that fun, not especially challenging. I like the old school feeling though... if you want to do it right, look at what Enoa4 did for Tamoachan for example.

So it's 7.5 at NWN1 voting "standards". Thanks.

Great Hack and Slash. No real RP in it, would need to multiplay or have a DM. Spellcasting henchmen have low Concentration and high Discipline? Are they supposed to be melee specialists.

The fights were intense, so if you just want to vent some frustrations from work, this is a good place to knock some heads.

Good to see this is approaching Hall of Fame....congrats Nol.

This was one of the first mods I downloaded and played.. mutliplayer hosting when I got the game in late 2004.

I fired it up not so long ago. Nothing seemed to be broken tho I admit I did not finish it. Like a fine wine it has aged well. I mean this was launched in 2003.

This was the best of Nol's mods in my opinion. The A1-4 was a close second.

Really it remains a fine adventure. Truly more hack and slash; but then the source material was as well. A fine adventure espeically for mutliplayer as I recall.

Roleplay elements can certainly be added by the Player and or a DM

Well done.

Very well done overall. It felt very Gygaxian, in that it's all about "There's evil in them thar hills and you're the only ones who can stop it!" The additional dialog was brief and pertinent enough that it didn't get in the way. There's a bit too much open space though, and I think you could have shortened the play areas by about 25-30% all around.

Fun little hack and slash that gives so much treasure and experience you could go straight to Q1 and skip D1-3.

GOOD
.I did not encounter anything particularly good about this module before I fell almost asleep while my character was running through a seemingly endless area with nothing to do.

BAD
.Ludicrous amounts of time wasted walking through vast -- VAST -- tracts of empty space. This is the worst part of this module, and the worst bored-to-sleep-by-empty-space module I've ever encountered.
.Fire giants have no melee weapons, only throwing axes?
.Token dialogue. Why even bother with it at all?
.Trust me: Don't bother downloading the .bik.

ODD
.No scimitars in the store.

There are 4 files in the zip.

Put G1-3.mod and G1-3.txt in the NWN/modules folder.

Put G1-3.bik in the NWN/movies folder.

Put G1-3.hak in the NWN/hak folder.

That's all you need to do.

I recently down loaded both A1-4, andG1-4 installed them, the way I have done others, but both show a window with--could not load the module, missing required HAK file. check your log file for the list of missing hakpaks.-- I have no idea where to go to fix this problem- send help soon

I'd love to play this series as I remember having a good time with it back in'79. When I download the file it doesn't install. Sorry for being so dense but how do I get this thing going? I've downloaded other mods without problem before.

While I liked it at first, it started to get a little tiring of killing giant after giant. Also nice stuff.

Hey Guy, Good job, quick question though, what's the story with the temple at the end, maybe a spoiler on that one? You had said you first played it in 78", well 81' or so for me.
And I really don't remember that part, anyway I'd like to finish it. Haven't played D & D since college( just picked up NWN six months back or so )and I never thought I'd get to play those old modules again. When you get the Vault of the Drow squared up I'll be downloadin' that one for sure.-J

Hi Nol
Yes I thought that was the case.. still makes me chuckle.. :) Also loved the "keg of level up" - my wife slapped me for keeping her awake with my comical muttering.
While I note you are looking to work into D and Q series and have some areas done.......
Please Please consider the C series. (C1 and especially C2 Tower of Inverness).
You do really fine work with interesting tricks like the magnetic orb (in A1-4) and I would love to see your work on the chess board among other things.
The D and Q series seem already overly represented although I will be sure to play your versions...
Cheers and thank you.

The door in A1-4 is a teaser for G1-3. There is no area transition from one mod to the next. I took inspiration from the old Infocom text adventures that always included advertisements for their other games.

Hi Nol....
I recently posted comments and ratings on A1-4 and this mod.
Congrats - very fine work. I enjoyed.
One question that is bugging me. In the A1-4 series there is a door in the Slavers Castle that you cannot open. The script acutally refers you to download this series of mods G1-3. I had a really good chuckle at that.
Yet when I finished G1-3 I did not come accross the link between? Is there a link? A transition area that brongs you back to the Drachen (spelling) hills?
For others potentially downloading this I highly recommend. Some high points:
The combination of the three gives it a grand adventure feel. Well done.
Completion of A1-4 is not required but adds value. The journal entires and a converation with a prospector hermit make more sense.
Very balanced fighting through out. Good attention to detail.
Nice balance of treasure experience.

Great Job! Completely enjoyed it! This mod was the closest to the "real" thing I've played....consider it to be BETTER than the official expansions. Hope to see D1-D3 soon!

The last guy joined exactly 7 days ago, and his complaint was that this mod is light on role play. He should have read the description before he downloaded.

If you like pure hack and slash, this is the mod for you. Lots of combat against the well realized giants of all types, huge treasure and experience if that floats your boat. If you're looking for role-playing and any dialogue or plot discovery at all, don't waste your time. No illusions, if you want to kill giants in all shapes and sizes, this is the place. Don't expect anything more.

My group is 2/3rds through Trev's G series right now. Has anyone here played both? How do they compare?

Posted by Sir_Toejam at 2005-06-20 02:18:04
oh, there was one thing i missed. i found a note from some dwarf saying that i should look at the stone giant left, and the left arm (in the fire giant area). i assume it is a statue somwhere, but i couldn't find it. I do think i found the dwarf that wrote the note, howerver (wasn't he the dwarf hench?)

Posted by Sir_Toejam at 2005-06-20 02:14:20
well, just finished solo with a mage/shifter (PNP style). at first i thought that it was going to be too easy after the hill giants, but from the frosties on, it was quite a challenge in spots. damn, those mastadon can hit for over 120 damage on a crit!

I agree that the drow were too easy. a couple of ice storms, or an empowered firebrand wiped out entire groups at a time. need better magic resistance and at least double the hit points.

the mindflayers were a nice touch, as were the "illusory" dragons.

i started at 16 and almost made it to 20 at the end. well prepared and strong build characters should be able to start at around 14 and still solo the game fine. 16 would be my recommendation for rogue builds or low hitpoint/low combat builds.

I played this mod with the PRC 2.2c installed, and there were absolutely no bugs and no errors to report. no modifications to either the mod or the prc haks were needed.

I played a good portion of the game shifted into the fire giant king. that was fun.

toughest battle:

hmm. several spots were quite difficult; fighting the king of the frost giants with all the minions was tough. the executioner fire giant was very tough - really surprised me! He should drop that axe he is carrying when you finish him off, imo.

final character:

6 wiz/6 eldritch knight/ 8 PNP shifter.

looking forward to the next module in the series.

cheers

Oops - my previous reply was incorrect. Just checked out the 2 chests in question in the toolset - they can not be bashed open, they do not require a key, and the Open Lock DC is 24. I'm surprised a Knock spell didn't work...

Hm, I did get his head... I looted everything right after the battle with all of them. Was anything at all dependent on the orcs helping in the fight? I didn't find them until long after I'd killed the giants, and then sent them to kill some giants, as that was an option, wondering if there were some there in the caves they'd go fight. But I followed them back to the main hall, where they proclaimed a great victory and thanked me, etc.
