This handy utility takes all the headaches out of converting images for use as Custom Portraits within NWN. Simply converts the required bitmap, Jpeg or Portable-Net-Graphic (.PNG) file at the click a button! Full instructions are included. Just unzip the files and folders from the .zip archive and place them as they are into the root NWN directory. more details can be found in the 'ReadMe.txt. file within the .zip!
Update 1.62: Now the alpha channel has been made opaque so the 'blotches' should no longer appear on converted images. Also, the size of the images has been fixed to match correctly.
Hi there, again sorry for my delay in getting back - I dont check here as often as I used to!
Nanoc_mai: The reason for the transparent areas is what's called an Alpha channel. To ensure colours are preserved from all imported images, they are processed at 32-bit colour depth. This, by default, includes an alpha channel. Alpha channels are used in some images where transparency is required, and they correspond to a specific colour. Unfortunatelty, there is no way to determine the colour that is declared as alpha, some images use pure black 0,0,0), pure white (255,255,255) or another popular one is magenta (255,0,255). If these patches severely hinder the conversion, I can only suggest editing the colour of the original image that causes the problem, sorry.

Im giving you a 9 for a great idea and one that works most of the time. Occasionally though, a portait made will have patches that appear transparent in-game where the original was black/white. Could this have to do with too many colours in the original?

oops,256x50. Sorry.
Posted by Eraqwert at 2006-10-22 10:22:11 Voted 8.00 on 10/22/06
Oh,I managed to get the exact blank this tool is leaving:it is 256x62,which is 256x150
less than
official ones.
Posted by Eraqwert at 2006-10-22 09:42:52 Voted 8.00 on 10/22/06
I give it a 8.00.
Not bad at all,but the blanks it's leaving is actually too small.
Comparing the official tga portrait with the
ones made by this converter, you find that
the blank left in the offical one is 256x112, but the one by the converter is 256x64 or so.
If you can fix that I guess everyone would rate this master piece 10.Really.
By the way...just a suggesion...if you would,
I think you should change the name of this tool..somehow this tool isn't showing up in the result of searching 'portrait' in the Vault...

Interesting, hateBunny. It sounds like the problem is with the converted portraits. Are you still able to use the standard portraits without it crashing? Are you using very large images? Perhaps if you could email me a copy of one of your original images, I might be able to identify the problem. Thanks for letting me know, sorry I haven't got a solution for you as yet.
I'm finding that this program puts the portraits in to the correct folder, and they show up in NWN when I'm creating new characters, but when I press OK, after selecting the portrait, the game crashes. Any ideas?

Cool.Extremely easy to use.

Hi, sorry I didnt reply sooner. Glad you figured it out. From v1.61, you should be able to browse the entire drive to find your pictures. The default folder where browsing starts is the install directory of the Converter (which SHOULD be the NWN folder)

Ok I figured it out - note that there's nothing in the read me about putting the photos you want to use into your NWN directory before starting. Once we figured that out, it worked great.

I downloaded this with high hopes but, sorry, I just don't get it. The read me file wasn't much help. I have a portraits folder with nothing in it - where are these images supposed to come from that I use? I'm confused.

It might look different, but works great!

This saves me a ton of headaches, thanks a ton for making this conversion utility.

Version 1.6 Now available.
This latest version includes some radical changes to make the processing and implementation of the utility much easier. No longer is a separate folder required and a Browser is implemened allowing to search and identify valid image files to convert on-the-fly. Unfortunately, this has lead to the abolishment of Batch-Processing, but this should be again implemented in a more user-friendly method for the next update.
Oh and Keiseth - The fullscreen usage is just becasue in drawing direct to buffer it's easier on Video RAM, however this is probably unnecessary as any build capable of running NWN should ahndle the converter regardless!
The program ONLY creates a Portraits folder if none exist, so there is no danger of overwriting. The application does not extract any archives itself, and must be COPIED along with the IMAGES folder into the NWN driectory.
This is great, only thing is, it should extract a folder called "Images". It did not do that for me, I just created a folder called Images. And it creates a folder "Portraits" which I think it should not, for fear it might overwrite one's current Portraits folder. Otherwise its awesome!

This could be easier - if it had a gui and if it put the pictures into a subfolder for you. But frankly - its WAAY easy and straight forward. USE IT. And stop by Tales of Celts.

The lack of votes disturbs me. Works pretty well. Cuts down 10-15 minutes of image editing into a few seconds... but why does it do it in fullscreen? Seems un-needed, to me. But hey, as long as it works so well. =)

Keiseth's 10.00 - Must have. While not too difficult to convert the image by hand, it DOES take a while without the aid of something like this. Many thanks.
Can't wait to try this out, it sounds great Archduke!
And to Jules about having to join the IGN -- I just reinstalled NWN and have been downloading A LOT of custom content this weekend, that IGN thing seems to be a fluke that pops up once in a while. Just hit back on your browser and try the download again. I have yet to see it pop up twice in a row...

Hi sorry for the delay in replying. The portraits in the portrait folder are for PCs only, and if more than one player has the same portraits in this folder, then they are visible in-game to those players. Unfortunately, the custom portraits cannot be selected from within the toolset for NPCs or Monsters.

Hi looks like a great program but and maybe I am just being stupid but I can't find the images in the game when I am building, the files are in the right place and the images convert do I need to do something else?
