ALFA is a NWN2 Persistent World set in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. It began in 1999, several weeks after the Neverwinter Nights game was announced, as a dream to recreate the Forgotten Realms in Pen and Paper style, using Biowares NWN computer game. It has been almost ten years since that first vision was conceived and the ALFA community is still going strong.
Over a year ago our first NWN2 server went live and we have since added a second NWN2 server with several more near completion and still others in various stages of development. Now we are celebrating the beginning of our second year on the NWN2 platform and invite you to celebrate with us.
ALFA puts a heavy emphasis on Roleplay and Character Development. Our players take the game seriously as we have a permadeath setting, as well as many other modifications that bring us closer to a Pen & Paper gaming experience.
Our Player and DM base literally spans the globe.
Our NWN2 Live Servers:
The Silver Marches
Baldur's Gate
Moonshae Islands
Western Heartlands
Servers in development:
Amn
World Map
Some of our features:
Automatic Download System introduced with 1.23
Support for new players
MotB and SoZ content (expansions required)
Multi server Support
Scripted Role Play Experience Points
Non Lethal Combat
Custom creatures and modifications to make them like D&D 3.5
Many custom scripts, reflecting PnP 3.5 Ruleset including all D&D skills, new and modified spells and modified feats
Readable and Writable books.
Significant improvements and fixes not seen on other worlds, including cross-server persistency and communication, seamless portals, and solid infrastructure to significantly reduce lag from sources like loading player vaults.
If you love the Forgotten Realms Setting, love NWN2, and would like to join a Persistent World where heavy roleplay is the norm, submit an application via our website and help us celebrate the beginning of our second year running NWN2.

You might notice that this is my second posting in a few years. ALFA is still around and our philospohy is unchanged. ALFA in an RP intensive PW which spans Faerun in the Forgotten Realms setting over multiple servers including The Silver Marches, Baldur's Gate, The Moonshae Isles, and recently the Western Heartlands. The play style is meant to recreate tabletop D&D using the 3.5 rules set.
Like RP? You'll like ALFA.
Like the Forgotten Realms setting? You'll like ALFA
You used to play D&D and wish you could find a group? You'll love ALFA!
Do you want to play a min-maxed half-orc sorceror paladin and sprint from one encounter to the next to get as much XP and wealth as possible conversing only in l33t? Look elsewhere.

The place has politics and drama, same as any Internet community its size, but the community remains vital even after a decade of running, with regular updates and maintenance. Old thorns in players' sides keep getting fixed, the DM tools keep improving, areas keep getting added, and a DM team is around to keep the game from stagnating.
Ever logged onto a server that had zero players before? No? Then you haven't been playing on ALFA.
If what you want is to set up a weekly session and play maybe 4-5 hours a week, ALFA will be perfect for you. If you want to have stuff to do or people to interact with on anything resembling a regular basis, just go somewhere else.
In case you hadn't noticed, there has been a grand total of ONE comment/rating in the past year, and it was a 3.0. What does that tell you?

to quote an ALFA-ITE, "I am sure that may be fun. But it is not ALFA!."
the PW is basically anti-fun and divides the players on two servers. one is the north, wilds, worldmap and what-have-you.
the other is a city with huge overly long roads to anywhere else, no world map. it is like they though i'd be impressed going down straight line roads with impassable bocages on either side of me just awesome so they did eight zones of it.
or at least that much, i couldn't bring myself to go any further.

I would not recommend this PW to everyone. I will only recommend it to those who really enjoy roleplaying and doing so in an environment where it is ACTUALLY rewarded. Which is something I have never seen before and I think is pretty special.
Another feature I have never seen before is the ability to travel back in forth from the Silver Marches PW to the Baldurs Gate PW.
I think it is amazing and that everyone who likes to roleplay ought to show up and have a look.
The areas are wonderful and you can tell that the creators put a lot of tender love and care when building this.
I'm not a strong roleplayer but everyone was fairly nice to me and I've even made some friends in just one week.
Spell casting is once a day and I think it would be nice if it could be broken into twice a day and for that I won't give it a full 10, instead I'll give it something darn close.

A wonderful community and certainly the top PW I would recommend.

Joined ALFA in 2005 and have surrendered more hours of my life to her since then that I am willing to admit to. I'm an old D&D tabletop player by nature and I love the fact that ALFA has made a D&D style PW in the Forgotten realms setting.
The RP is immersive, the builder and DM stunningly talented, and the players a lot of fun to be around.
What we need now is .........more of you! Got a hankering for roleplay intensive gaming similar to D&D.....come on in!

Great developers. Great players. Amazing DMs.
What else could you possibly want in an RP community?
Check out the OAS Server for starters!

ALFA has been a great role-playing experience for me the past few years. The player community is international and unique. I love that everything is set to the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting and that there is a strong attempt to make NWN as close to pen and paper style play as can be done with the game engine. The creativity of the DMs is also top-notch.
If you are looking for a hard-core roleplaying environment set in the Realms, look no further.

PS, if the long defunct and hopelessly outdated original Frontier server is at the top of this list with a score near 10, ALFA deserves a 15 or so.
Posted by ithildur at 2009-03-21 06:06:05 Voted 9.75 on 03/21/09
Two words to sum up ALFA for me: INTENSE and DEDICATED. I've had the most intense RP on any game platform on ALFA servers, with DMs, admins, and players that are dedicated to the ideal of hardcore RP with faithful adherance to FR canon as well as attempting to create something much closer to pnp than the vanilla NWN/NWN2 engine. The staff are a group of extremely devoted RPers that are knowledgable about FR, devious plot schemers, technically adept, creative and ingenious builders, and plain old hard workers. If that along with permadeath (which is a big part of why everything is so intense; every decision counts) and a relatively low magic setting sounds like your cup of tea, then you'll love ALFA.
I have shaved off .25 from a perfect then because, well, nothing is perfect, and atm the only thing slightly lacking is DM coverage for non US timezones which translates into having to be a bit patient and proactive with scheduling in order to truly get the most out of the ALFA experience.

I am just thrilled with what is happening at Alfa, and the dedication and care that is put into creating a FR world _________________________ control lift station odor

Great DMs, great players, the best roleplay I've ever found online. This is as close to PnP D&D as you can get with an online game.

Been a member there for almost 5 years now. Brilliant community, brilliant RP, brilliant fun.

After 5 years with ALFA, I've got many memories of great characters and hilarious and scary times across many areas of the forgotten realms. I even saw Zebra! Great players and DM's to be found here, and a real challenge. _________________________

ALFA in 2009 has evolved alot and now seems to be entering into a new era, from my personal experience in the last 12 months, thre is less and less drama, and more and more community based colaberation. ALFA is comming ahead in leaps and bounds with ground breaking achievments happening right now, and more in development.

I like it. The players are all genuine, due to the strict application guidlines, and there is a great support staff of DM's and Tech staff that are constantly evaluating new stuff, or creating new stuff. We have a working Subdual damage system, soon to have read and writable books in various languages, some of the finest areas developed. Come and check it out.

I greatly appreciate the apology you extended to me...I want to clarify I anyone reading this I would never want my comments to deter anyone from trying out this PW. The experience I recieve I'm sure is not common place here and hope everyone interested in playing here does so. I regret my previous posts and wish no disrespect for the ALFA staff and players. I am new to the online gaming experience and the confusion was as much my own fault and hope, when I am more familiar with gaming,to reapply and give this pw another chance...Again thank you for the apology and I hope these words find more weight than my previous ones...Thank You Nikolai Karpov

Nikolai, I'm sorry if that is the impression you got. You stumbled across a bug in our new website, with your application, that I had never come across before. I know I spent a fair bit of time trying to track down the problem for you, and made an effort to PM you with what was happening.
I am not really sure where this name calling comes from, but that is something that I do not like to see in ALFA, in anyway. If you let me know where it came from (even better if you can provide a copy of the PM / logs of the chat) and I will do my best to chase it up and make sure it doesn't happen again.
Anyway, I'm glad you found a world that suits your tastes. Hope you enjoy it there - NWN is a very rewarding game.

very rude most pw staff are helpful and kind but not here...I am new to the multiplayer facet of the game and because I didn't understand the application process I was called names and made to feel as if I was intruding...I really hope they treat others differently...I am currently playing on another RPG server much more NEW member friendly... vote=1

Formerly a very active player and DM there.
ALFA has many intelligent, creative, and talented gamers/builders but the community suffers from bureaucracy, rules lawyering, and rampant egos. An unhealthy community that manages to provide some amazing gameplay with the right participants. For the project as a whole I honestly give it a 6, but will say there are a few of its members that deserve every bit of a 9.

Ignore the forums where old members argue about insignificant points.
Get in game and the fun is real. Quests spanning months if not more. TIght knit groups forming and playing togeter for real life years in some instances. Epic events up to and including wars have all been had in ALFA. And of course....somtimes that dungeon just needs clearing:) But the RP is awesome and the permadeath and rules (even tho some think uneccessary) do make players play their characters well.
And,.....an australian timed DM or two and player groups!!!! (of coursew the standard masses of euro's/yanks to)
GIve it a shot. Stick wiht the application process and ignore the boards for a while and get in game and ask some people tohelp set you up with same timed people It's worth it.
Really have enjoyed it for years and years.

Been playing on and off for some time now. The DMs and players are both excellent, as are the world itself with immersive environment made by the builders and scripters of the ALFA team.
As others allready stated this is a work in progress and with that follows glitches and what not. I myself didn't find the application process to be daunting but I can understand those who do. I've heard from people who gave up because they found it to be tedious, which is a pity, 'cause it truly is worth the effort to join ALFA. I hope for a more smoother process for future members.

I've been around since ALFA's inception, and even though I keep disappearing for a couple years or so, i always find my way back to see what I've been missing. I'd like to think that speaks volumes for the quality and depth of the roleplaying and server content. An excellent investment.
