This modification to the appearance.2da file raises the camera height to just over the PC's head (likewise for any henchmen), thereby eliminating the annoying obstruction of your view by your own character's head when zooming in within Character mode. This creates almost a first person view.
V1.03 is bug- and conflict-free within the OC and MotB, as far as I'm aware. Noone has reported any bugs or conflicts with Persistent Worlds, however I don't play in any Persistent Worlds and have not tested it.
INSTRUCTIONS: Simply load the "appearance.2da" file into your "My Documents\Neverwinter Nights 2\Override" folder.
NOTE REGARDING CONFLICTS: If you use other mods or haks that edit the "appearance.2da" file, then you will likely experience conflicts that cause problems. If this is the case and you would like to gain the benefits of this mod with those others, then you will need the merge the changes in this "appearance.2da" with any other changes that those other mods and hakfiles include.
MOD BUILDERS: According to comments from FuzzyHart, this file may be helpful to you when crafting new landscapes and areas because it allows an "up-close-and-personal" inspection of those environments. To do this, you'll need to close your toolset and start the mod from the menu.
Huzzah! to Lord Firkraag for this excellent idea!

Is there anyway of making an "Over the shoulder" version that is shoulder height of the character and is positioned to the right of the them so that they are on the left side of the screen? _________________________ ShockWolF - Author of Wulverheim

i really like this when i was building.

it works with the 1.23 patch & Soz,
as i would like to use it again.
Hi im playing the original campain, whats the difference betwen "appearance.2da" file and

Hello Fuzzyhart, I apologize for the delayed response. I had a hard drive crash a while back and am reloading all of my games and files. I do intend to update the file within the next couple of weeks.

Any chance you'll up date this for SoZ,
or is to much trouble? just wondering
because it's so useful building mods.
This mod might have a conflict with some other mod in your Override folder. If you have other mods in that folder, you should remove them one by one, checking whether you're seeing the camera changes after each one is removed, to identify the conflict.
Are you playing a race in the latest expansion, SoZ? I have not updated the file for SoZ, so there might be a new race that I need to adjust the camera for.
Thank you, Pazzuzu, for your vote. Let me know if you come across any other creatures that require an adjustment to the camera.

very nice little hak....in the witcher there was an actual first person mod that worked beautifully. also it made the game for me.
there were some discussions about trying to get it to work in nwn2 but i think it was determined that the way they did it in the witcher wasnt compatible with the engine differences in nwn2.
I've updated the file to adjust the camera for druid shapechanged forms. I enjoyed stomping around with a view from the frost giant's tall perspective instead of having the view entirely blocked by the frost giant's backside when zoomed-in in Character Mode. I've fixed the views for the fire giant, frost giant, Horned devil, nightwalker, and iron golem.
I also adjusted the camera for the wizard's homunculus familiar so that you can view the surroundings from just above the flapping wings instead of below the flying familiar.
Version 1.03 makes important changes for the druid wildshapes; no longer will your Character Mode zoomed-in camera look out from INSIDE the animal's body!
I've seen more adjustments for a version 1.04. The druid's level 9 spells allow shapechanging to frost giants, fire giants, horned devils, Nightwalkers, and iron golems. Currently, the zoomed-in Character Mode perspective gives you a nice view of those large creatures' backsides. These are extremely tall creatures, so the adjusted camera views will be interesting!
BTW, as suggested by a few users of this mod, I am working on a v1.03 update that will put the camera at head height for all druid shapechange forms. The updated badger view will see the world from about 2 feet off the ground. I should have it finished this weekend.
Thanks for your vote Dblade! I actually struggled a little with exactly what to name this mod since it's not really a first person view and it isn't intended to make NWN2 into a FPS sort of experience. I personally use it in conjunction with the Strategy view and at about the same amount percentage of time(probably similar to yourself). For my own gaming purposes, this mod allows me to most effectively use BOTH the Character Mode and Strategic Mode to gain the most enjoyment from the game. Hopefully the name of the mod hasn't turned off some of the population from trying it.

I don't use this as a (Nearly) first person view. As it stands, this made the height adjustment I've always thought was needed in character mode in order to open up the view in front of the PC. You got a 10 regardless of intent!
V1.02 is now posted. Thanks to some guidance from SushiSquid (as well as originally from Lord Firkraag), I believe that the files above fix the problems with races not visible. I tested the "appearance.2da" file and found no issues with with any races, with druid shapes up to level 11, and with a number of cutscenes.
Let me know if you find any other races or NPC's that have difficulties. Game on!
Thanks for directing me to that file, SushiSquid! I'll examine it later today and try to get an update posted.

Er, sorry. It's 2DA_X1, but you get the idea. Anyway, I've now merged this with another mod's appearance.2DA and also added in the changes for the Mask of the Betrayer races. As a note, certain companions and even druid wildshape forms will also need for you to edit their height value if you want this camera style to work with them, so you might want to add that in as well.
Good effort though, and it certainly is useful.

You do realize the reason this makes every new creature type from Mask of the Betrayer disappear is because you're using the old appearance.2DA, right? Go edit the one from the 2DA_NX1 zipped folder, not the one from the 2DA folder. That will fix your problem with missing half-drow and genasi.

hurmferd, You might want to let people know,"When working on a mod", That if they run the game "From the tool set" they won't see anything different until they close everything and start the mod from the menu. This is with the "over-ride ver." silly me, it took me a while to figure that out.
"By the way"
I highly recommend this to every builder out there, As it will give you a up front close detailed view of your surrounding's.
Try this test and you'll see what i mean.
Take an area that you've built and believe is done and use this in it.
You will see any-thing that is a Little off, stick out like a sore thumb. I think this has raised the bar for builders when making their mod's.
Steven, yes thanks! Please send me that file and I'll compare the two. That'll probably show me where the problem lies and I can make the necessary changes.

I have been playing the OC with a half-drow using this. As I mentioned before, my PC wasn't visible the first time I tried this. I merged your appearance.2da with another one from a module and then I was able to see my half-drow PC. So, something in the merger fixed the bug you mentioned.
If you would like, I can email my working appearance.2da file to you.
