Description
A Prince of Light, or Shadow

Welcome to "A Prince of Light, or Shadow," a Neverwinternights 2 Module designed as a retelling of the fairy tale, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves." In this Module you play as the Prince and you begin by meeting a dwarf named Sullen Sorrowstone while wandering a forest trail. From there, the adventure is yours to discover!

Tips & Notes:

Module is designed for new, Male melee characters, level 1.

You will receive the necessary xp to reach lvl 4 at the beginning of the module, when you accept the Quest.

Your dialogue choices are EXTREMELY important. They will determine what options you receive in future conversations.

There are TWO DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT ENDINGS. Play through twice to explore both the good and evil paths.

Read the Quest Journal updates frequently if you get stuck.

Read the COMPLETED QUEST JOURNAL ENTRIES for the complete END STORY.

All the module items are UNIQUE. No stock items!

Read the description on the BLOODMAIL if you take the evil path for even more back story on the witches!

I hope you enjoy my module!

Only just noticed this on a 'missing votes' update and thought I'd give it a go. It was a fun diversion, I have to say.

I very much liked the uniqueness of everything - creatures, loot and quest rewards all had their own flavour, which was very appropriate to the setting.
The areas were well themed; the atmosphere certainly was right.
I especially appreciate the 'evil' options and dialogue; I enjoy good, evil, and morally grey in equal measures, but I often find only the first one is seriously catered for.

Unfortunately it is very, very short, and not just linear but with no real surprises. It would be a fair base for a larger module with more options and elements though, which means that at the core it is a sound piece of work.

Very nice little module. It was very short though. I completed the module in about 30 - 35 minutes. I played through as a GOOD PC, and will go back and play as an EVIL PC as well. I can see where it is going, and I am sure I will enjoy that 30 - 35 minutes as well.

This is basically a quick module to train a PC to 5th Level.

Ran into a bug when I met Agatha after lying my way. I confessed my deciete and killed Agatha. Now I am stuck in the tower as the door does not allow exit. Really was a show stopper for me. I am sure I can reload, but for me it is not worth it. Oh well. thanks for taking the time to create a module anyways.

This is one of the few modules that makes me dislike the new voting standards. IN GENERAL, I would say "Very Good, Deserves a Look."

Personally, I proclaim it to be "Outstanding, a Must Have."

A nice, solid, and short module which fills in a huge gap ... an evil option which doesn't wimp out. Even though I mostly play heroes, this fit the backstory for Maurice Chevelier perfectly.

P.S. He thanks you for the guillotine.

Nice little module with beautiful areas, good dialogues with the daughters witch and an interesting end. Hehe I should have used a dwarf this time. Thanks Saorsa.

Nice little twisted story. Played as a paladin which made it pretty easy, but enjoyed the dialogs none the less.Looking forward to your next endeavor.

Firstly, I really enjoyed the area design. I think that was my favorite thing about the mod. Three very different atmospheres for the three witches. I also liked that the creatures' names reflected who their area's witch was, and how the armor and healing potions reflected how your character was advancing--as long as you played a good character, that is. I would have liked to see those same items reflect an evil or neutral character. Also, since you said the mod was for melee characters, I played a monk for the good path and a barbarian for the evil, and neither time could I wear the special armor. The dialogue for the PC seemed a bit...trite, I guess? Though the witches' attempts to dissuade the good character were well done. The evil path seemed a lot less developed, though I have a feeling I missed a bit because of the dialogues I chose, reading through the comments, so I'm not counting off for it. All in all, it was quite enjoyable and I really liked the actual story of sullen sorrowstone, how he was neither culpable nor innocent. I get the feeling you could make a really excellent mod if you had the time and energy.

Nice to play a mod. that primarily focusses on one grimm story. The twist at the end and the multiple outcomes was well done.

Posted by msnevil1 at 2007-06-15 07:24:28    Voted 7.00 on 06/15/07
Simple story mixed with "suggested" subject material that should be rated Adult. (Incest between daughters\king for exp., 7 dwarf lovin' (Nice touch BTW), etc.)

Lack of real roleplay and very linear story was a downside, but the atmosphere made up for it. (Like the previous post stated, more roleplay mixed the atmosphere would have been nice.)

Still the mod was fun, and that is what matters. (Still Snow white would be more attractive if she had a "beard" for exp.)

For obvious reasons, I held off posting whilst the contest was running.

First of all, you certainly have a talent for nice looking areas, and the dialog was decently written. However, where this module could have needed improvement is on the limits. Everything is limited. I can only play a fighter type character, the maps are single path only (even when they look open) and the dialog only offers a couple of choices. I also ran into the game-breaker bug posted by others.

Looking forward to your next mod, I think you could be on to a winner if you combined your talent for area design with allowing more free-form play (with side quests, companions and explorable areas).

Overall I rank this a 6.0 a qualified recommendation for those who don't mind playing within strict limits.

Good story with funny dialogue.

Got hit with the same bug as Thirdpres (the lying path is broken). Also, unlooted corpses fade on reload.

Area design is quite pretty and playable, but the fights are way too easy for any combat build (take expertise and you'll never get hit). Also, you should specify strength-based only, as a dex/TWF build is useless with the equipment here.

Posted by FireSarge at 2007-05-18 03:42:19    Voted 5.50 on 05/18/07
not a bad module but this might be a bug at the end...if you shoose too everytime you open up dialog with Snow White you get 4000XP...you can do this until you hit lvl 20. i dont think this was intentional but i figured i would point it out.

Posted by GreasyDogMeat at 2007-05-14 15:43:51    Voted 9.00 on 05/14/07
One of my favorite submissions.

Cons
-Linear
-Easy combat & respawning which removes any challenge
-No companions
-The plot, imho, was great, but really could have benefitted from the witches being more tricky. It is painfully obvious they are playing you for a fool... would have worked much better if they appeared as sweet ladies hiding their evilness and really trying to pin the blame on the dwarf.

These may sound like heavy criticisms, but the fantastic scenery, ability to play twice with two different outcomes and excellent writing made up for the shortcomings.

I played about 5 different times and the module, IMHO, simply does what it set out to do and is entertaining.

" 3 - Poor Execution, Potential Unrealized"
Definitely I can't add more. The potential is seen: good theme. But this is just linear mod, that tries to do something with the plot by fails... And there bugs in the dialogue with the fourth witch. For example, the dark elf barbarian (yyyyes) was unable to wear the "evil armor" (maybe where were some other ways to procede, but they were unseen). And so on.
I wish you luck in future module works. Still its 3, not zero!

It was a good try for a module with nice atmosphere & good amount of endings. Your idea of the Snowwhite fairy tale was good thinking, but it didn't seem that interesting to me. Could have needed some kind of deeper story to it; the idea and characters could have been explored & developed more. Good idea though! At times it also felt a lot like "run-and follow the linear plot line and kill the enemies on the way!"- plotline which made it a little boring, at least to me. But the way things are presented on the screen (like atmoshpere, characters & custom items) made up for it a bit.

Your mod was good, but it wasn't so interesting that I'll go over a score of 6.50. Worth checking out though, if you don't have anything special to do.

Thank you for your contribution Saorsa! :)

A fun little module with good/evil paths and a nice twist in the story :) Interesting progression of the story, where characters try to divert you from your path. It was a nice experience.

Glad you had fun Steven :)

If you read the Quest complete journal entry for the evil ending it'll give you the final bit of the story.

I enjoyed this module and appreciate your effort in creating it. The final conversation with Snow White was probably my favorite point.
I played through with a good fighter first and everything went fine.
I then played through with an evil fighter and initally ran into the mentioned bug after lying to the 3 daughters then confronting the Mother. I then reloaded and ignored the Witch while I checked out the mirror and sarcophogus. This updated my Journal to say I should go back and talk to the witch again, even though I hadn't talked to her at all yet. I did then talk to her. This time I was able to deny her and defeat all 4 witches, then save Snow White.
I reloaded again and agreed to join the witches. This took me to a new room with the 4 witches and a chest. Here, it seemed to get stuck. The mother told me to equip myself, which I did. When I talked to her again, she just kept telling me to equip myself. At that point, since I was being evil anyway, I attacked and killed the Mother. I then determined that I couldn't damage any of the daughters, nor would they turn hostile when I attacked. They didn't try to help their mother either.
The fact that I bothered to play through so many variations of the ending shows how interested I was.

Thanks, StC :-)

Did anyone like the writing, story, or area design atmosphere? I felt those were the strong points. Given the nature of the contest I felt a simple, easy to play, but entertaining module was the way to go. I didn't want the devs to have to spend hours playing through.

Also, my original plan was to have each witch send the player on a quest where they'd be faced with a critical moral dilemma, but I didn't have time and it may have exceeded the contest rules for gameplay, areas, and so on.

Interesting and quite enjoyable but a little too easy and with no real challenge. I played it three times; once as good, and twice as evil (because I hit the same bug as Thirdpres on the first evil run through).

Overall this module is a nice but rather unspectacular adaption of Snow White. The battles on the road seemed rather pointless. The end battle was a little to easy for a 4th level fighter. Thanks for making this mod.

Posted by saorsa at 2007-05-01 10:17:17
Darn, it looks like this little bug spoiled a lot of fun. Very sorry! I hope you choose to play through again as it's a pretty quick module. Again, very sorry! I am my only playtester and these things sometimes slip by!

Every path works, btw. It's just the "Lying" path that breaks if you read the mirror's second option after killing the witches, as far as I can tell.

Yep, I ran into the same problem saorsa did.. unfortunately, I didn't have any saves so I'll probably have to replay the whole game.

Overall, an okay mod, but I got a bit annoyed at that silly bug. Now I have to replay it over again!
