The Wayfarer's Rest inn and training center is located in a remote but beautiful region of the Sword Coast. It was established by the famed adventurer and hotelier, Angus Clearwater twenty years ago when he retired from adventuring. In his days as an adventurer he saw many of his fellows fall needlessly because they simply lacked skill or experience. So when he retired he decided to dedicate his time and considerable fortune to educating and training wood-be adventures and heros.
Like you.
NOTES:
This is a simple character creator inspired by Berliad's FRW Character Creator. You can level up to level ten and buy some appropriate gear with which to equip yourself. You then export your character via the game's menu, and thus you have a new character ready to take on the mod of your choice at the recommended level. It doesn't do anything different than probably a lot of other mods but I tried to make it as interesting as possible.
The method by which your character improves him/herself is intensive training as opposed to magic.
It's based on the Wayfarer's Rest area and characters in the mod Traveller. It features a merchant who sells customised armor for the image conscious adventurer. It also features girls in their undies (and grow up content so might not be suitable for younger gamers).
Requires Mask of the Betrayer and Storm of Zehir.
Any constructive opinions and comments welcome.
The script used to level up the character is called ch_a_levelup. I dont know if its an official script or if someone else has written it. If its your script would you let me know so I can give you credit. Unless I dont have your permission to use it, in which case let me know and Ill take the mod down.
As always feedback and bug reports appreciated.
If you have any problems feel free to email me at [email protected]. Go on, I'm desperate for human contact.
Thanks very much.

I got SoZ last week, installed it, and now Vingan works! So it must have been SoZ after all. Madmick, thanks for the tip. Gonna try The Corruption of Kiahoro now :-).
Bernissus, I was just looking to download this module when I noticed your problem, I believe I can help. You say that you installed NWN2 & MotB and updated to 1.22 however if you look in the Module description above it states that it requires Mask of the Betrayer and Storm of Zehir.
I did a clean reinstall of NWN2 & MotB on my notebook, updated to 1.22 and tried again. Same problem. I played out your Traveller module recently without such problems, but the other day I tried The Corruption of Kiahoro, and this seems to have a similar problem on my computer(s) as Wayfarer's Rest Character Creator: when I talk to the halfling, I only get the sentence about a spot of trouble, nothing more, and when I then press ESC to call up the main menu, NWN2 will crash - just as with Vingan. Perhaps there is something similar in how you have set these two NPC's up that is connected with this apparent bug? Something you did not use in Traveller?
Hope that this can be of some help.

Whoops ... forgot about the undies myself (just remembered there wasn't one in the module rar).
I'm very sorry, it does need a hak file. I neglected to include it in the archive. I'm very sorry about that. I'm uploading a new one now. If anyone downloaded it without the hak and you don't want to download the whole thing again drop me an email and I'll send you the hak.

@tosscobobble: no hak pak required
@Bernissus: I was on the 1.22 beta when I had that problem. If you're on the 1.22 final and have removed the override from consideration ... I'm afraid you've gone beyond my meager knowledge. Sorry.
@Gwydion669: Yes. I tried renaming hak, tlk, override and ui folders, but that didn't help, unfortunately. Only other option I can think of is to completely reinstall NWN2, which I'm not very keen to do...

@Bernissus: Have you tried renaming your override file temporarily? If you can open the merchant then, at least the problem can be narrowed down. The new 2da's in SoZ played havoc with several in my old override folder. That might be it.
Sorry about the problems people are having. Let me get it updated to 1.22 (I don't know if it's out yet but it's not on the Vault, and auto patching never works for me), and I'll check it all to make sure it works. If it still doesn't work for some people then I don't know what to do.
I seem to be having a similar problem as Gwydion669 had: I can't get the store to open. When I talk to Vingan, I get "Welcome to my honest shop", but no store. When I then press ESC to call up the main menu, NWN2 crashes. I experienced this with 1.21. Today I updated to 1.22, but that did not change anything.
Otherwise, I like the module very much. Good work.

I was finally able to check the rest of the mod out it was the beta patch breaking the merchants, but it worked fine with the 1.22 final.
I really liked it and enjoyed the concept. The hard part comes in the scoring (I wouldnt want to rank it above modules such as yours which have a lot more put into it and more that players can get out of playing it).
On my personal scorecard, I give it a 9.0 or 9.25. For the boards, Ill score it a 7.5 because I couldnt recommend it for everyone. Someone who just wants an editor would consider it more limited than something like Vordans, but people that like more of a role-playing scenario would love it.
The addition of alternate armor designs is a great one limited only by the lack of the tetris style inventory of NWN1. With the one-square icons, you cant see what youre getting until its paid for. If the merchant buys the armor back at the same price, this wouldnt be a problem (dont know if he does I forgot to check). The only way I can see around this is by having more people in the courtyard with each one wearing one of the armors (Why, yes Im wearing chain shirt #3.). That or using a character doll in a window with scroll arrows like that used by Charlies Item Appearance changer.
Youve done a good job here. About the only way I could see it being improved would be with sparring matches in the basement as someone else mentioned and a temple where donations could shift alignment (say 10 gp per point on the law/chaos or good/evil axis). Keep up the good work.
I don't know what that is, but no I haven't thought about anything like that.

I will be putting in a vote, human_male. I'm on the beta patch, so that might be the reason I'm having trouble with the merchants. I'd like to at least "see" some of the custom armors before I put my vote in.
Just thought of something for my wish list: ever thought of adding a tailor alongside the armorsmith which triggers Charlie's Appearance Changer like some PW's have done?
I'm glad someone likes that, I put a lot of time into them.
And thanks for voting. Hardly anyone is for some reason.

Ah I see! OK then! I really dug the custom armor BTW. I got a Swashbuckler I'm getting ready for MoW and the custom leather +1 is totally rock and roll.
Thanks MC. Yeah the idea is when you arrange training with Kirsty you're not magically levelling while standing at the bar. You're actually spending several days or weeks undergoing rigorous training. But since I couldn't do that you just have to, y'know, pretend that's whats happening.

Hey I thought this little trainer mod was real fun! And after taking the boat to the island and not being able to get in without your other mod........ I'm thinking I'llcheck it out.
I liked the romance quicky. The only thing that wasn't clear to me was leveling up and heading down to training. I leveled at the bar [just like real life! :P] and then grabbed gear and headed to the basement but no one wanted to spar. But other than that I thought the whole thing fun!
RyanJ, sorry you're having problems. It's weird that that's happening. If your games version 1.21 I don't know what to suggest, but thanks for not giving it a low score because of that.
I was looking forward to this mod, but it's not working for me. As another comment mentioned, the merchant dialog won't come up, I can't open the door to the inn, the boat doesn't do anything, etc... So really the only thing I can do is wander around the very small starting area and speak to the random NPC's and hear their little comments. Very disappointing. I guess it has something to do with a newer game patch?
I'm hoping for an update or fix, since this sounds like a really fun way to build up a new character!
Thanks for reminding me, it does need a warning about grown up content.

Hei again,
First, not offended by anything, actually. And the undies certainly aren't problematic in any way! Undies are undies - nothing wrong with them. Just observed something along the lines of 'oh, well, so there's Kirsty (who'll probably say the same things to my next character - which was actually a bit funny even), there are those bard chicks, the courtisan, the girls upstairs hanging out with "the author"... Doesn't offend me. Just sort of stands out. Also, I don't think any of that stuff will offend anyone else. (Except, perhaps, some of the chatting with Kirsty - that might require some "adult" content warnings? I have no idea about the rules there, though.) Despite my comments, I thought the "romance" in the mod was, actually, in a way, one of the more realistic NWN romances I've seen. :)
My idea was that it'd be good if the stores checked for xp. But I guess checking level is fine. I was thinking of races such as the genasi and the drow who will have less levels with the same xp.
The same with leveling up. My character was a genasi. I picked the level 3 option, gained the normal xp for level 3, and thus got to the second level because of the race of the character. I don't think that having some experience already caused any trouble.
Thanks for that, Lariam. I can do the thing with the weapons, no problem. The stores do check your level. Level one to five is low stuff, six upward is the medium range, and ten is the high end with the +2. Do you think that's necessary or should I just bundle everything into one store? A level three character wouldn't be able to afford a +2 sword anyway.
I'm not sure I quite understand the problem you had with leveling. Are you saying it worked alright but it was just the wording that didn't really fit right? When I tested it I started at level one, and went up each of the levels and it all worked. But if you already had some XP I suppose that could cause a problem but I don't see how. I'd need more information. But if you want to be level four, you just take the Level 4 option and it should work.
If you were a bit offended what was it exactly? Was it Kirsty or the undies? Because I didn't make those undies, you know.
Thanks again. And thanks for voting.

Okay, now the voting option is there... I'll say it's Very Good and Deservers a Look! (I might raise that a bit in case this'll be improved upon a bit.) _________________________ Forgotten Realms Weave

[Hmmm... For some reason I cannot vote - there's no voting option there, at all. I'll try again later.]
The idea of a character creator that has an in-game explanation for the gained experience and gold is very neat. The explanation is rather minimal, of course, but that's how it should be in a non-adventure character creator.
So, that's excellent. The areas and characters look good, too. And one cannot gain overly powerful stuff, which, too, is good, I think (loved that comment about cold iron weapons etc.).
Some comments/problems/suggestions for improvement:
* Armor for image conscious adventurers? Yay! Offering custom armor is a cool idea.
* The weapon store could perhaps have more "copies" of the same weapons. My character would've wanted two daggers and two kukris, but he was only able to buy one each. So, especially with weapons that one might dual-wield, it'd be good to have two of each. (Or perhaps an unlimited amount of them? I don't know how the shops work.)
* I couldn't export my character in the exterior area; I did manage to do that inside the inn.
* My character was an Air Genasi, who had some little experience - not even close to 1000, but still something. Two comments about the experience gained. The text talks about multiplying experience. It's easy to read that as talk about multiplying the xp - which, of course, isn't how the thing works. I understand that it's an attempt at talking about experience without talking about "levels" or "xp", but it still sounds like talk about xp and doesn't work the way one might think. I don't have any constructive suggestions in that regard, though. And it's quite alright. Secondly, though, I wanted to triple my character's experience (level 3), and only got whatever was needed for 3000 xp - leaving my character at level 2. So, perhaps it should say "ECL" or something. (I was aiming for a character appropriate for a mod for 4th level characters, and thus hoped to gain two levels for the Genasi.) Of course that was easily corrected, no problem there. But that could work more smoothly.
* Just a question: do the shops react to levels or to xp? The more powerful races do have a level penalty, but they need not have an "equipment penalty" (had I leveled my character to level 9, he should've been able to get the level 10 equipment from the stores, I believe). Don't know which way it is - just thought you might want to check that.
* Kirsty...oh, well...that was actually pretty well executed - the author is a pretty good writer and all - but I still take the image of women conveyed by this mod to be somewhat questionable. Not going to reduce the score, or anything, but it's still worth saying, I think. And it's not like we haven't been warned ('...features girls in their undies'). :)
Thanks for building this - at least one of my character has now spent some time at the Wayfarer's.
I really like the "role-play character generator" as opposed to the usual stuff. Fun little concept.
Level 10... suffices to prepare characters for pretty much any module I'm currently looking to try and raising the cap might not agree with the modules theme. (Would expect some to differ on this, though.)
The store options are definitely insufficient for preparing certain level 10 builds. You're not going to find an official D&D publication that recommends a level 10 wizard have no bracers whatsoever, for example. I don't have D%D 3.5 books on hand right now, but isn't +2 weapons/armor what WotC suggest for level 10 characters?
I rather doubt you're going to find any modules aimed at L10 characters that are more fun than frustration underequipped...
Basically, I think it'd be good to find out what equipment WotC suggest for each level (is in the DMG somewhere, if memory serves correctly) and to expand the store inventory (and maybe the available stores) to better refelct that.
No vote just yet... I don't the books at hand so I can't check how big the equipment problem is (going by official recommendations), and I really hope you'll adapt the module accordingly, anyways.
