The original ZORK I The Great Underground Empire was a text based interactive fiction game. It was an adventure where the player typed commands in a command line user interface and got response back in written from. Like:
>Game: You see a large tree, what do you want to do?
>Player: Cut down tree
>Game: With what do you want to chop down the tree with?
>Player: Cut tree with knife
>Game: You start to cutting the tree with your pocket knife but soon realize that it would take you a lifetime.
You get the idea. This is an adaption of that game and it's done using Neverwinter Nights 2. It can never be the same game as the original but what I felt when I played Zork I all those thousands of years ago are inside it. It will absolutely differ from other players perception of it, but that could never be my responsibility.
But apart from that, the game is not DnD or any other RPG. If you are looking for serious role playing or a hack and slash feast you might be disappointed as this is mainly a puzzle adventure. If you like games like Myst or Riven but want to be able to move around in a 3D world and feel more inside the game I think this module is a great one. Anyway, I hope you give it a try.
You probably find most answers to you questions in the walkthrough, but if there's still some questions don't hesitate to ask them in the forum at nwn2zork.freeforums.org. If if find a bug or another issue please report them there.
And remember, ZORK I was a really difficult game. So even if I've removed lots of things you could screw up the game with and introduced several clues and straightened up the logical flow - it's still a very hard game to beat.
Don't hang down you head if you need to consult the walkthrough or the endless resources of the Internet (yes the original maps and hint books are valid for this module).
Enjoy, and don't let the Grue bite you!

+1 for the manual installer ;) Not that I don't like automatic installers per se, but it requires Admin rights, so I guess it will install directly into NWN2's install dir, instead of the profile. I'd like to keep my installation clean. Easier to delete mods, conflicts can be easily resolved, etc.

@Ocanthus Haha, touche! That's why you have the cool "Hall of Fame"-banner and I've not :) But to quote Captain Julio Scoundrel in the web comic Order of the Stick: "It doesn't matter whether you win or lose, so long as you look really cool doing it!" Thanks for trying ZORK, even if it bored you. _________________________ ZORK - Rediscovering the Great Underground Empire a re-make of the classic ZORK I, for Neverwinter Nights 2 Amraphael's House of Curious Things My NWN2-blog _________________________ If you download it, vote for it!

Amraphael, maybe we should collaborate. I saw your comments on Tomb of Horrors that it was lots of fun but not pretty enough. This Zork mod is no fun but really pretty. Together we could conquer the world!

@Andrenloreweaver Thanks for your vote! Yeah, I also sat playing it on my C64 countless evenings after school (and sometimes instead of going to school). The blue screen with light blue text gave me a first start into fantasy and sf-litterature and later on RPGs and CRPGs. _________________________ ZORK - Rediscovering the Great Underground Empire a re-make of the classic ZORK I, for Neverwinter Nights 2 Amraphael's House of Curious Things My NWN2-blog _________________________ If you download it, vote for it!

I played Zork over and over as a kid, it's a wonderful reminder of hours spent in front of a tv and Commadore 64.

As promised, here's your vote :-) I haven't finished the module yet, but I've seen enough to know that it was worth getting the game just to play it. True, the maze is a bit annoying, but it was annoying in the text version as well, so that doesn't really count. I love the amount of detail you've put into the rooms, and how you captured the atmosphere. Good work, and I'm looking forward to exploring the rest of it!

@E.C.Patterson Thanks a lot, bud! @NimueDA I'm so happy to hear that and hope that you will enjoy it. @thanatopsis70 Thank you for voting! I had some bad nights sleep over that maze, which is the area I like the least. First I made a real maze like the original one where all rooms where identical but it was even more boring to navigate. Glad you liked the most of the module though. _________________________ ZORK - Rediscovering the Great Underground Empire a re-make of the classic ZORK I, for Neverwinter Nights 2 Amraphael's House of Curious Things My NWN2-blog _________________________ If you download it, vote for it!

You've done an amazing job with this. I actually got the expansion pack just to try this out. Yeah, the maze areas are a bit dull and tedious since it takes 20 minutes to run through areas that can be covered in a few minutes in the text version by typing a string of compass directions. I'm glad you stuck so close to the original for this, even it if doesn't always translate to the modern 3-D world perfectly. I wish more RPGs and action adventures had this many puzzles to solve. This is definitely worth playing, but I would recommend using a map to anybody who doesn't like wandering around endlessly. It might have some spoilers, but it will help anybody unfamiliar with this old-style adventure game get the most out of it.

Believe it or not, I just ordered NWN2 just to play this mod. I borrowed the game from a friend when it came out, tried the OC and found it boring, and never bothered with it again. And then JasonNH told me about your mod, and I knew I had to have it :) I'm old enough to lovingly remember the Infocom classics, and I can't wait to play your module. I'll vote on it once I've actually played it, but for now I just wanted to say thank you - there must have been a tremendous amount of effort involved, and I'm really looking forward to exploring it.

A truly remarkable, rigorously faithful and beautiful recreation of the text-only classic adventure game. The original Infocom guys would be honored no doubt. This is not a cRPG and it is most definitely NOT easy without the walkthrough, but I recommend it highly to all Zork fans (whether or not they are NWN2 fans), classic adventure game fans and the curious. Playing this is like playing a little piece of gaming history that you never dare touch because it had no graphics. I actually played a bit of the text-only version after playing this, and the images of this mod came readily to mind at all steps. This is how true to the original this version is. _________________________ E.C.Patterson Gaming Parents Studios Trinity, the NWN2 adventure : Download now.
