Description
SEARCH FOR THE TEMPLE OF THE GOLDEN SPIRE.
As the cool autumn evening draws in, you arrive at the quiet forest village of Greywood. Starting out on your adventuring career, you're willing to take on almost any job to build your reputation (and pay for food and drink). Little do you suspect what's waiting for you ahead......
This is a conversion of an old (1983) AD&D adventure from White Dwarf Scenarios 2.
I've tried to keep the P&P feel as much as possible, and be aware that this was originally a competition module - some encounters are meant to be too dangerous to survive, so learn to scout & weigh up your chances before charging in sword first. In case you're not playing a class that can scout easily, there are companions of most common classes around the village, along with heavy hitters to help you out.
WHOS IT FOR?
Its aimed at a party of 1st level characters - either single player with the companions available locally, or a group of real live human players - whichever you prefer.
With a high level character you could run through the entire adventure in 30 minutes, but a starting level party will probably take a couple of evenings at least.
DEATH:
This isn't good for your health! I really didn't like the original campaign style of just waiting a little & getting up like nothing had happened, so death in this adventure is a bit more final - so save often and judge your encounters wisely!
HELP:
Speaking of help - most areas have some sort of help, if you can find them, in case you get into a sticky situation.
This is my first adventure, despite having played NWN since it first came out - and I've found the toolset a really steep learning curve - but the comments people have kindly left seem to indicate it came out OK :-)
CUSTOM CONTENT:
Finally, there are a couple of HAKs that are needed for this module - see files below for details:
They add a little extra content that I needed for this adventure.
Massive thanks to all the custom content creators out there - you're absolutely fantastic!
VERSION INFO:
V2- Original module uploaded
V3- Script after final encounter is now sorted (I hope) & doors made tougher so you really do need to find the 'keys'.
V4- Final version now - all bugs squashed (I hope). Ending script changed to be more reliable (But shout up if anything untoward happens), and the Priest's equipment in the temple is a little more 'secure' now - for those of a "chaotic-ahem" alignment who can't help looting other people's belongings.
V5- Now Uploaded- Changed the ending script to something that's guaranteed to work - although please shout up if there are any problems.
Companion's equipment checked to make sure they don't drop it when they die - careless fellows!
Father Zarkon's conversation has been changed so the exploit mentioned in comments won't work any more.
Checked with the gnomes fishing by the river & they're happy to help if you get into trouble.
Have fun!
Clyordes.
& Please vote / leave feedback - it really does make a difference :~)
Hi there! Its been a little while since I've played through, but once you have the item from the statue, you should get a journal update giving you a clue where to go next - the short of it is back to the village, maybe calling in at the temple when you get there stocking up if you need to before the next part of the adventure. Then try heading out of the village via the one road you might not have tried yet - over to the west if I remember right. Good luck shout up if you get stuck again (yes, I'm angling for that 10th vote to get me into the hall of fame :-) ) Cly. _________________________ "Cor- a Beholder, Just think of the XP!"; Dave the Barbarian in the Demonweb pits, long ago. Love the mod so far! Problem though, I don't know where to go next. I'm a bit slow, I can't figure out the poem the celtic cross gave me. I found the warrior at the point (the statue) but where do I go from there? Point the sword at the cross?? Help!! I want to move on but where?

Hi Karen, Thanks for the feedback - always appreciated. There's no ending conversation any more - I deleted it on a previous revision as it wasn't firing reliably - now the journal ends with a journal update an XP award. As for treasure, you seem to have the opposite experience to some other players who complained that the treasure was excessive. I guess its all down to individual taste, but as a general rule I'd say characters level 1-5 should be limited to items of +1 value, level 6-10 limited to +2, etc. the value of those items should give a guide to what other magic items should be affordable. In this adventure, I used a few different shops, at least one has items which should be way too powerful / expensive for the characters in this adventure. I know some people moaned a little at seeing things they couldn't afford, but stocking shops is always tricky - in the toolset its next to impossible to see the value of the items you're stocking shops with, and after all, in real life there are always things in shops you can't afford - so I'm not too worried about it. *** SPOILER *** The teen in the quest from the chap pacing back forth in the village is in the area to the south - look for some ruins on the map. *** END OF SPOILER *** Oh, and I'd be ever so grateful if you'd offer a vote - go on, you know you want to :-) Re my next project - its up available - just follow the link in my signature, although I'm waiting for version 1.4 of the module to be cleared, which adds the party editor so you can create your own party to adventure with alongside / instead of the companions already available. Not sure how long it'll take to appear - BeyondThePale sometimes gets stuff on the site within a few hours, but I'm guessing he's held up by real life over Easter. Thanks again for all you feedback. Thanks for the fun! I think I finished the mod, but from what I read here it seems the convo in the tower never fired for me. I haven't been able to find the missing teen either. I haven't seen that quest mentioned here and I have no idea where he is. It'sbeen mentioned already, but there was no way to get enough money to buy anything worthwhile. Everything was very expensive and the stuff we found wasn't worth much - it didn't seem to be balanced very well in that respect so you might want to take a look at that. I look forward to your next mod. Karen :)

Thanks for posting Karen I'm really glad you managed to get it working. I'll take a look at the Ant HAK when I get chance to find out what's going on there. Sounds very odd - the name of the file is set by the HAK creator the module looks for the same name chosen by clicking on the hak file from the list of those available - so its not supposed to be possible for one to be different from the other - unless maybe the name of the original HAK has been changed on the web page. Either way - well done for persisting - hope you enjoy your stay in the Greywood! And by the time you finish this one, Cult of the Reptile God V1.4 should be on the vault you can play that too! I was finally able to get the mod to start and am looking forward to playing! I kept getting a "missing hak" message when trying to start - the giant_ant.hak had an empty space at the beginning and the game didn't recognize it. I thought I'd leave a message in case anybody else has this problem. Karen :)

Oh, just one thing - I don't know what you were expecting, but the "ending" isn't anything really flash - its just a journal update XP award after the *** SPOILER *** wraith is killed *** END OF SPOILER *** Cly. _________________________ "Cor- a Beholder, Just think of the XP!"; Dave the Barbarian in the Demonweb pits, long ago. Doh! Just when I thought I'd sorted it once and for all :-( Guess I know what I'll be doing when I get a little free time to investigate. Many thanks for feeding back though, and for the vote - much appreciated. Cly. _________________________ "Cor- a Beholder, Just think of the XP!"; Dave the Barbarian in the Demonweb pits, long ago. I enjoyed this mod quite a bit. The areas were well thought out and constructed. The ending scene/script didn't fire for me though, so I was left with a question mark over my head until I read the issue here.

Oh, and the adl_rws_towers.hak.lzma file is for the auto-downloader - not something I've implemented - its mainly just used by the persistent worlds - which are well worth checking out - but after you've played this, and Reptile God ;-) Cly. _________________________ "Cor- a Beholder, Just think of the XP!"; Dave the Barbarian in the Demonweb pits, long ago.
