**Requires SoZ only for content - "old style" character generation and party system**
Back in the day - when Gygax designed this module - he set out to prove that a certain party of overconfident adventurers could not "handle any challenge" - so he put the Tomb of Horrors on a tournament list and proceeded to prove them wrong.
The Tomb of Horrors is the original death trap!
PnP Conversion from the 3.5 Edition version of "The Tomb of Horrors"
Can you survive the twisted Tomb of The Demi Lich Acererack?
*FINAL*
If this revision goes well I will start to add some of the 1st Ed features as that version was a bit more detailed than the 3.5 Ed version.

Complete Crap! I'm just wandering aimlessly around the island searching for anything. No area transitions, no hidden entrance , nothing seem to work!!!

This mod is the greatest disappointment ever! I'm just wandering aimlessly around the island without a clue what to do! Area transitions don't work, there are no illusionary rocks, no triggers, completely nothing to interact with. For me it is completely unplayable. :(
Just getting started on this but wanted to make some observations for those frustrated at the difficulty. The goal (per the descrition) was to recreate Gary Gygax's classic Tomb of Horrors. For anyone who doesn't know he wrote this adventure back in the days of 1st edition (possibly before some of yuo were born)it exists to eat player characters. In terms of the original mud it was possible to memorize the contents and still get turned into a corpse. Let me give you some more perspective you know those wizards you see named on spell lists: Melf, Tenser, Mordenkain? Those were player characters once and yeah this adventure was designed with them in mind.

Short but good!

ok, stumped like no other... Been wandering around the Temple for about an hour. I can see the hallway off to the side, but can't find the trigger. I have a search of 22 so i am guessing I am not just missing it. I ended up in the alignment switching room, fell for the trap on the altar that destroyed it, and can assume that maybe I shouldn't have bashed the throne???

So my character had all his gear stripped and I am not sure how it happened. I had a bag of saphires and a true seeing gem. Can I continue without them?
Killing players is easy - the idea was to trick them into killing themselves treasure hunting - the combat therefore is obvious - but with traps maybe I could have made them more deadly - or possibly make a failed roll more consequential - like with the many pitfalls or searches required to get stuck further and further in the Tomb just to get out again. _________________________ |Morbane|

The good... definitely has that PnP feel to it. Areas are nicely done, and the traps are done well.
The bad... A lot of the doors are buggy. A lot of times, you'll "find" the secret door on the other side of the wall, and a lot of the doors don't seem to work all of the time. Also, some of the skill checks seem awfully high.
On the other hand, the combat (what little there is) is way too easy, particularly the lich fights. Acererack is supposed to be one of the baddest of the bad; he shouldn't go down in a couple of rounds. Also, the majority of the traps, while nicely executed, are a bit on the lighter sight in terms of damage. Part of the charm of the Tomb is the threat of instant death - very few of the traps are actually deadly.
Would have been nice if the henchmen had some personality; none of them even respond if you try talking to them.
karen, there is a fresco in the first hall - it is if a creature behind bars - attack that fresco. Once you kill the big gargoyle you will have what you need to solve the statue puzzle - thing is, once you go there you will have to dungeon crawl deeper into the Tomb again to get out. Also, there are more than 1 illusory frescoes in the second hall. Good luck! _________________________ |Morbane|

Two more questions if you don't mind. Is there only one snake statue with a secret passage? And, what about that darn arm I've been dragging around? I'd like to finish up at least those 2 things (it would really be nice to find that woman's door too lol).
Oh BAH! That "Golden Key" (as named when complete) is just not necessary (false clue so to speak) - thanks for trying the Tomb of Horrors: The ultimate death trap!
@karen - use the half keys item property; activate by right clicking on either key.
Dont give up - the best is just that far away now ;)

I'm giving up while I'm ahead! Thank you for a very twisted, deadly experience lol! This has to be the most difficult dungeon crawl I've ever done and I know I could never have finished it (well almost all of it) without your help so thank you - and thank you for your patience!
I would like to make one suggestion though. Either the rougue has to be a higher level or the traps and secret doors shouldn't be quite so difficult to find or open. I got tired of hearing "search failure" and "must have missed something." Great game though - the areas are very well done and the traps, well some of them certainly were deadly!
Looking forward to your next masterpiece.

Hi Morbane! One more question if you don't mind. I forgot to mention that I have 2 half keys - what do I do with them? I'd love to be able to complete the entire tomb before I quit!
Thanks again,
Karen ; )

Well, after using the key and saying we would stay in the tomb I was finally able to get back to the beginning. But, I still didn't find the "womans" door and in room 5 I keep getting a "search failure" so I can't get to the escape cave (I managed once, but only my pc not the whole group and the door was locked). I was, however, to just walk out from the cave where we entered. I still couldn't do anything with the golem though. I'll wait for help before quiting though.

Thanks Dewie, but we used swords on the cubes - no fireballs and the door was fine. I made it to the final rooms (of course at the time I missed room 33), it's the rooms closer to the beginning I'm trying to get back to. I'm bloked at every turn!

Morbane,
Thank you again for the module.
I made it through to the end. I used an old save file and re-entered room 21. I was able to locate and open the door. I made it to final area (room or area 33) and finished.
I guess I will increase my rating for the module. If possible and appropriate, you might consider making some of the doors easier to spot, open, and move through.

Hey Karen, you know the room with the slime on the walls? Did you per chance hit them with a fireball? If so, you also blew up the wooden secret door which would allow you to continue to the final encounters. If you have a save prior to that room, you'll be able to finish. Sorry Morbane about the spoiler, but the text about the slime just begs for a fireball. Might want to make the door indestructible or change the description from slime to ooze.

It looks like I did the whole tomb backwards lol! I can't get back to the area near rooms 8-10 and obviously missed several hidden doors. I tried to get back to the main room and can't - and I can't get either door to open back into the throne room. So I'm totally stuck.
I was about to give up and decided to try an earlier save and found room 33 which I obviously also missed the first time around. Anyway, we killed the lich, but the room was totally black and I couldn't even see the fight. I was able to open the lock and get back to the boat so I technically finished, but I left out areas and was still carrying around the golem's arm. Is there any way to get back to the areas I missed without starting all over? I have 2 saved games. In one we're in the lich's room with the exit to the boat and the other outside the southern secret door to the throne room.
I had a lot of fun, although I must admit it was very frustrating and there was no way I could have finished without your help! I'm so glad you were around to answer questions - thank you - and thanks for the map it was very helpful. I'll vote once I know if I'm finished or if there's any chance to continue. There's no way I'm going to start over lol!
Thanks again,
Karen : )

Thanks Morbane, but I'm past the snakes (unless the others went someplace else) and ended back up outside the starting area. I obviously missed at least one area and will have to backtrack. I know my characters keep saying "must have missed something," but whatever it is never shows up or we already did it!
Thanks again,
Karen : )

Morbane! BRILLIANT work! Although I was ready to give up several times, I persevered, and was rewarded with victory! When will the next one be ready? Ha ha! Seriously, pls. keep up the good work!

Morbane,
Thank you for your help. Thank you for the module. However, I think I will quit trying to get beyond room 21. Is there a door? The door will not open. I am getting tired of the module. I will leave a thermonuclear device to help clean out the remaining part of the dungeon. (ha ha) The demons and constructs can then have decades of fun trying to restore the tomb like Acererak wanted.
Karen,
The that required a female to open it was near area eight and ten on the map. It was one of many secret doors in the long hallway leading to long room ten.
Just keep going deeper into the Tomb - once you meet and destroy the Demi Lich you can either dungeon crawl back out or jump to the ship. _________________________ |Morbane|

I feel your pain, Karen! That's the beauty (and curse) of pnp style. The missing piece is that subtle DM redirection to keep you going if you miss something. I started over with a party with a better skill balance, and now am grappling (literally) with the gargoyle statue, trying to figure out how to reattach the friggin' arm. Fun, but frustrating!

P.S. I couldn't edit my message, so I started another. Somebody mentioned a door only a woman can open and I don't remember that so I must have missed some area. Where is that door????
