Description
READ 'NOTES' SECTION BELOW BEFORE YOU PLAY.

I have updated the module to improve terrain detail.

The starting story of this module is the player volunteers to go on a trip to Flinrock Island to find a friend's missing niece. Read the module description for more details.

NOTES

There is a limit of ONE COMPANION at a time, they can be switched via the PARTY ROSTER. The party roster button is available in the same menu as the SPELLS and INVENTORY buttons. Once a companion joins your party, and you select another companion... the original companion can be added via the party roster. Keeping one companion in the party for most of the key events in the module, will result in a different end dialogue.

The module was designed to be played with a companion, you will miss out on some important dialogue without them.

If you want more challenge in combat, you can play a level 4 character. Level 6 will be an easier challenge.

You will probably end up level 6 in this adventure.

This is my first module, and it was based on a pnp adventure I designed back in 2003, including the characters names etc. I hope you enjoy.

Overall I enjoyed this module. Once the main plot sets in you do feel railroaded through the sequence of the story with little choice of action, but I can forgive it as the writer has his story to tell--and it's a good story. That being said, it took some of the flavor out of the adventure. I like the dwarven keep.

i enjoyed the interesting story and liked the characters i met, some areas were a bit too empty and too much running around.
thx for your work

@ Ambrose, late reply here, but yeah I am over all that has happened in this mod thread. It is all good, and I bear no hard feelings towards any commenters. I have moved on, but I hope a few people will still play this mod now and then and have a decent time.

7 is a good score for a first time, indeed.

Hello T26,

I just got finished with your mod and seeing that this is your first and where you are ranking....Dude! I think that is good. Have you stopped and thought for a second what your up against. Now I don't mean for that to come off as your competing on the Vault. At least you shouldn't be, this is as area you submit a creation for others to take part in. If your going to do mods you have to except the good as well as the bad. We as humans are all different ergo every experience will be different, some good some bad.

I myself am going to try and create a mod and if and when I do and I can get ranked this high my first time, hell that will be good for me. If you have a look at the V standards 4 really wouldn't be a bad score for a first mod.

If you take the time and read the comments and are really honest with yourself, some of them are on the ball, and they aren't ment to hurt they are constructive critisisms I think. And these are the comments which make a first time mod builder a better one later, provided you take them that way. Then there are other ones that are blowing smoke out their Arse lol. Well you take those with a grain of salt.

Read them and use them to improve yourself and your hard work, Yes.... I understand that even the easiest mods take time and most others do to. I think this was a decent play through as my vote informs you so. By your last post it would seem that you have thoughts of working on another mod, well I say " GO FOR IT " If you see this post, I would like to say this, create that mod firstly, for yourself because that is your vision. When you do and you are comfortable with it, don't hesitate to share it, I'm sure there would be plenty of people to try it, surprisingly those who played this one no doubt.

Well that's my 2 cents.... Keep it up and remember....

" That which doesn't kill you, will only make you stronger "

Sincerely, Ambrose MacAthol

Cctor of veil thank you for the well thought out post. I probably did get too frustrated. I was not trying to reach HOF status my module is not of that quality that was always obvious to me, as it was my first one and was flawed. It is not recognition that I wanted, I just blew a fuse because of some extremely low scores. 7.33 is fair by itself. I just wanted some people to enjoy the passion I put into the story, and some did. I do not feel frustrated any more, it was a human outburst. I have another module that is very very early in production, but real life commitments are making it hard to do. Plus the immense time demands that module making puts on one. Whether I complete it is indefinite.

I just read other comments from here and I noticed your latest post. There are some things I would to discuss.

You have complained about very low scores. I think 3,50 and lower than that are considered as "very low scores" and you don't seem to have gained any of those. And I think the average of 7,33 is quite good, Roads of Flinrock has beaten even some more popular modules.

Or were you trying to reach the Hall of Fame status? I think it's hugely overrated since getting that recognition takes many months even from the best of modules - partly because, if I've understood correctly, NWN2 has fewer players than NWN1 had in its best days. Even getting to the Top Rated list is admirable: there are currently 243 modules in NWN2 vault and only 95 of them has reached to the list.

I don't see getting highly respected is the main poin in this vault. Sharing something you have created, a piece of your mind, should be enough. You are a good writer so at least you have one major strenght. I know that my future campaign will suck in outside area desing but I concentrate on providing good characters and story, the things I think I'm good at.

But my main point is that obviously your efforts are highly appreciated. Your three months weren't wasted because during those months was produced a very engaging adventure which you should be proud of.

I surely enjoyed the exprience. Let's get the negative points out of the way first. Areas were quite empty didn't bother much but adding something on the non-walkable area would add more immersion. Some odd desing solutions made my eyebrows raise, I don't personally see why ever companion couldn't be with the player at the same time (I was unable to find that mysterious Party Roster button, I tried every button on my keyboard).

The best thing in this module was character desing, they were interesting and beliveable. My favorite was Lord Grinald because of his determined and fiery nature. Also villains were planned well which is awfully rare in community-made modules (and even in offical ones). It was a nice change to see a villain with descent motives.

A small but nice trip to barren island. Your work would be nice to see in an epic campaign.

Hey thibbledorf26,

I haven't played the module yet, but I intend to. I hope its not too late to share some comments with you regarding your last post.

I understand where you are coming from, and what you are saying. Honestly, I feel that you must make a module that you would enjoy playing first, and then hope the community will share a similar interest. I see that you have several thousand downloads... surely many people have enjoyed your work, but did not take the extra step to set up an account to vote.

Well, I just hope after a little brak, you will return to module building.

Best of luck!

5? Wow. The same score people give to those 20 minutes long experimental modules people put up on the vault. Thank you for your vote sir. This is the straw on the camels back. The module has many faults, yes. But it is three hours long and has a coherent story and very little bugs. But somehow because of a few very low votes it ended up in the lower end of the modules list. I spent three months making it, months I could have spent writing, reading, socializing in the real world, enjoying video games, movies etc. I will not make that mistake again. I was in the middle of making another mod, but I will scrap it, or finish it if I get a large group of friends who play NWN2, then I will distribute it privately to them. Obviously my efforts aren't appreciated, and I am sick and tired of smart-alecks picking apart my module because of every anal mistake they find. If I need an outlet for creatvity, I will concentrate on writing real-world articles and stories, which I have been published for. Or DMing hobby games with friends. Stuff that actually has real value. I thought there might be a place for average modules in this vault, but I guess its either EXCELLENT or CRAP. We module makers who can make decent, fun modules are wasting your time. Well you all only wasted three hours, I wasted three months.

The Good:

The mod was completely stable and bugless (gameplay-wise) with patch 1.6, although there were some minor graphical glitches.

All social skills except for Taunt get some use, but there are particularly many Bluff options. Crafting is mostly supported - a welcome rarity. Also, a Sleight of Hand check - that was a (welcome) first! There are traps and locks as well.

The PC's race gets recognized and acknowledged in a couple of places, which is also neat. I wonder if there were perhaps some special options for dwarfs, as the adventure takes place in a dwarf community.
Combat was agreeably challenging on the highest difficulty, but nothing memorable.

I really liked "visiting the house and then answering questions about the things you have seen there" quest - a very neat implementation, which, unfortunately wasn't used to good effect.

It also seems to me that some books that you find in the mod were written by the author, which is a very nice touch, if true.

The Bad:

Now, for the less satisfying things. In contrast to many NwN2 mods, where dialog was either merely functional or perhaps added a bit of flavor, this adventure has a lot of dialog (which I generally prefer in RPGs). Unfortunately, the amount of it makes roughness and mistakes impossible to overlook. They start out just as distractions, but towards the end the polish goes out of the window and things get really awkward. A proof-reader was sorely needed for this.

Also, while I applaud in principle the attempts to include non-combat tasks, they are all very thinly disguised fed-ex quests and get tedious sooner rather than later.
My particular pet peeve - an "investigation" which serves as an excuse for a rigid sequence of fed-ex. It is possible to include a very satisfying investigation in a CRPG (see investigation of Richard Wright's death in Fallout 2)! This module even features a neat "visit and report" mechanic that would have fit nicely into such, but it isn't adequately used.

Nor does the story account for all alignments, because you are looking for a friend's niece in the face of ridiculous odds. No matter how nasty you can be in the side-quests (which dry-up half-way through anyway), this doesn't fit evilish characters. I wish that a bounty-hunter motive - money/reputation and a debt of honor were introduced as alternative motivations.

The module is also visually bland, although it is not such a big deal for me.

All in all I like the things the author is trying to do, but am disappointed by implementation. There is clearly a potential there, but also need for improvement. Of course, it is one of the earliest NwN2 mods, produced despite great toolset difficulties and in a short amount of time, this has to be taken into account.

Character: Lvl 2/2 Fighter/Rogue, evil male...

This module had a great length with it. I was a bit surprised actually, since I thought it would end a lot quicker. I thought the (MINOR SPOILER) thief guild would be the last opponent...

The length of it doesn't cover for the rather guided story. I was playing bad guy, and I ended up saving the whole island from it's certain destruction. It didn't fit my character so to speak. Maybe there was a more evil end for thsi story as well, and I managed to miss it by making wrong decisions somewhere (and if it was I apologize), but I was lacking in evil options...

The areas are a bit dull. They are said to be improved, and if they are, I would be a bit disappointed. I know it takes a great deal of time building nice areas, but it's worth the effort. The mood and the area design is what's keeping the eye from seeing something as boring...

I hope I don't sound too harsh, because I did played it through, and I had fun along the way. It's a good module and a decent story, but with more details I think it would shine a little brighter...

Thank you very much for this contribution!

I really enjoyed this module; I liked the main character, the main storyline; I found the back and forth with going to the halls so much a bit tedious but the storyline with the main enemy was solid.
This was a good few hours worth of game time; thanks for the work, dude!

Again a first time mod builder BUT having played the game, great potential.

Tha author has made an effort to introduce some roleplaying possibilities, player companion interaction, wel though out combats and a decent storyline. Actually the end part I thought was VG.

OK roleplaying was easy but another thing that got me was convos with NPCS where a diplomacy etc check was made, the results were hidden. That is normally in chat bar you,d see diplomacy roll is 10 + 8 = 18 vs dc of 20, failed (or something like that), in this mod this wasn't the case.

During convos with Liege and Dwf King, maybe it would have been an idea to be transported immediately to each. It was a bit of a drag, to run a fair distance back and forth, and to be perfectly honest my enthusiasm for the game dropped quite a bit and you may have lost a few points here and there.

Anyway to me the effort put in leads me to believe that you can build a mod that will be HOF

I'll raise my vote a bit, thanks to the (what I'm willing to believe are) improvements in the area design. I mean, I haven't actually replayed the mod, but I feel confident I can safely raise my vote a bit regardless of that. Still *very good*!

Cheers,

I really did like this mod, especially because it's focussing on a dwarven community! Yes, there are some flaws concerning area design, but then again..
Would have enjoyed though to smell a little more of this "breeze of a romance" between my PC and that cute henchwoman ;-) (Up to now there seems to be not a single mod making use of the influence parameter, NWN2 is offering us, which really is a pity!)

Played through this and didn't find any significant problems. The very large areas were both welcome and boring. Liked it enough to want to encourage you to continue building stuff like this. It was fun, and what more can one ask? Extra quarter point for being an early mod, though you probably deserve more. I believe that your next effort will knock our socks off.

modowd and del0 thankyou very much. I am glad you liked the details I put in.

This is one of those modules that I just couldn't stop playing (until, of course, it ended). Thanks!

I understand that this was one of the first modules created for NwN2, so, I can dismiss the plain terrain. At least it was easy to get around, and did actually make sense, as far as the geography goes (dusty rock of an island). I also agree that there was a bit too much running back and forth, over and over. Once again, it makes sense... but a few more options to 'teleport' to locations would be nice, since, most of the time, there really isn't an option on where to go next. I also really liked the single-companion restriction. I kinda' like the small-party scenario. Also, kudos for the multiple endings, although I only saw one. It's tempting to replay to see them, but I'll have to wait a while before I'm willing to do those messenger runs again.
Much fun, thanks!

Good solid adventure in need of a little polish. As it stands I think this is worth a 7.5 or so, my higher mark is based on the potential this mod has and I can easily see myself revising up to a 9 or better. The idea is good, the story is reasonable and some of the incidental details are excellent. The package is let down by poor area detail, fairly frequent typing errors and a lot of messenger style running around towards the end (although I like the place this has within the story, I spent so much time running through that dwarven hall I came near to going on a killing spree).

Solid work that could well polish it's way to excellent work. Well done.

Finished. It was a nice couple of hours - Roads of Flinrock being one of the first NWN2 mods with several hours of adventuring on offer.

I thought that the story was quite nice. I really liked some of the side quests, as well as some of the dialogue. The characters felt quite alive. The balance seemed good, too, for my 4th level character. Considering that my character was far from optimized, I, personally, wouldn't recommend using 5th or 6th level characters, but these preferences vary from one player to another, of course. I also liked the treasure and the items available in the stores. The setting was cool, too. It is FR, but the location is a made-up island. Concentrating on a dwarven community was cool. Dwarven communities with any detailed attention given to them are relatively rare in NWN mods, it seems to me. The mod would probably work very well with a dwarven character, but it also worked well with an elf. The fact that my character was an elf, and in unfamiliar surroundings with not many other elves, was very nicely accounted for in some of the dialogues. Great touches there!

The dialogue could use some more polish. I did run into a lot of typos. Another thing with regard to which the module doesn't do so well is the area design. The areas are relatively big and empty, and do not look very natural (this is partly explained by the nature of the setting, though). So, that's a minus. *However*, this mod was, I think, a brilliant example of how an NWN2 mod can be a lot of fun, and an extremely valuable contribution to the community, even if the areas don't look astonishing - even if the powers of the toolset haven't been put into maximal use in this regard. Many people have said that in NWN2 it takes a lot more time and skill to build beautiful areas. That is true, without doubt. But I'm glad that this mod was released even if the areas could look better. So, in case you find the starting area, say, not to your liking, don't be discouraged - give the mod a chance! Some of the areas were good, though. For example the Halls looked pretty good. :)

I'll give this a '7' - 'Very Good, Deserves a Look'.

Thanks for building this mod, Thibbledorf! In case you'll be building some more mods, I'll definitely check them out. :)

Cheers,
Lariam

Hey thibbledorf - just wanted to say that I started playing this mod of yours and I'm enjoying it a lot. Fun story thus far, very nice quests and dialogues that flesh out the setting. I'll comment more and vote when I'm done. Could take a while. I'll be hosting some visiting friends for the next couple of days instead of playing NWN2. :)

Yes. Thank you, I eventually figured it out after running around for an hour. Ok. I finished the module. Great story line. Really liked some of the unexpected twists and turns. I also liked the general layouts of the towns and locales but do agree with some of the others that the areas are a little too spread out and way too sparsely decorated. This could still be easily fixed by dropping in some trees and accessories and what not. Overall this module has the potential to be really good with a little more polish. The transitions really annoyed me.they should all be uniformeither have map screen, normal transitions or text based transitionsI spent a lot of time running around trying to find out where to go because I failed to talk to the right person at the right time. Overall I really enjoyed this module, its a little bit longer than some of the others and had lots to do.

gregore, talk to the dwarf king in the hall, who will set you on your way. you must meet his lorekeper in the throne room, who will direct you to the girls family. then the adventure will continue. in the conversation with the girls family, there will be a teleport link to the new area.
