Description
Conan fans unite! This is the final version of this first installment of the Hyborian Age series. This module will allow you to play a Hyborian Age adventurer, not unlike Conan the Barbarian himself. The story begins in the outskirts of Yezud, in Zamora, and acts as a fine introduction to Robert E. Howard's fantasy world, as you infiltrate the mysterious temple of the spider god, Zath... Custom armor, weapons, and Basil Poledouris' Conan soundtrack all contribute to the immersion of this module, which, admittedly, is a hack fest. But hey, it's Conan! Note that spellcasters are not supported yet. The current magic system just doesn't fit. I will bring casters into part 2, however! The download is a self-extracting executable file which places the module, hakpack, and music files into their proper directories. Just run the .exe, and start up NWN. Good luck, and may Crom grant you the power to strive and to slay...

Actually the atmosphere was wonderful and the same can be said of the music!
Although it was brief adventure, however I look forward to the sequel.
Sure I would also like to keep my equipment, but what to do ...

This is a cool mod, but I prefer Legions of the Dead (John McA).

A high quality vintage module worth dowloading if you don't mind the file size.

Visuals/Sounds : 9
The module may not be visualy breathtaking in any way but the soundtrack got me 100% hooked. Bravo!

Gameplay : 8

I encounter no bug or glitches. Most of the game did flow fairly well. There was a bit of backtracking early on with some respawing critters but the game did speed up a lot after that making the combats closer to what you see in the Conan movies.

Documentation : N/A
No read me but the journal is used until the end. Not sure where is the end of the module my guess is right after defeating the Boss (the one who just killed your friend).
Exported my Barbarian 2/Figther 2 at that point after taking the 8 stones.

Roleplaying quality : N/A
The module is more like a recreation of one of the Conan movies so you do not have much room to roleplay. The few dialogues are quite interesting though.

Action/Fun:8
Plenty of action and I did have a lot of fun playing this module (only reloaded once - the boss holding the cell key is really tough btw). Great atmosphere thanks to the soundtrack.

FYI - I have recently purchased NWN Diamond, and I'm getting back into the game here. But as is witnessed by several people here, this module, and its hakpack, are bugged yet again, due to expansions and so forth.

So rather than fight that battle, I will probably remake this module from scratch, and then continue on with Hyborian Age 2. I'd rather make new material than continue fixing the old. I'm also working on a couple of other projects that I'll probably submit to the Vault, but I know a lot of people really like the Conan stuff, so I'll definitely put some time towards it. By Crom!

I've recently picked up a collection of Howard's Conan stories and begun reading.

And yes, he does have some strong female characters. It's easy to misjudge Howard because of his 'meal ticket' Conan stories that, unfortunately, color much of the popular perception of Conan. (Being that they focused heavily on scantily clad women. But hey, it was pulp fiction, that's what got onto the cover of the magazines, and I quite understand the need to eat and pay bills...:D )

Maybe we ought to email the creator and bug him a bit. Think that might help? Judicious flattery can work wonders on a person's motivation. :)

Frosty, not all of Howard's original tales are sexist. In fact he has some very strong female characters in a few of his stories. Read "Red Nails" sometime, if you get the opportunity.

It has been some months since the creator posted anything about the sequel and I continue coming back hoping to learn something more. I will second the offer to run beta for the next module if it will aid it getting it out!

All right, then. Finished the mod. It was short, but I'm reconciled to that. Beautifully scripted and written, but I only have one *small* complaint.

Everyone seems to be blind. They kept referring to my female barbarian/rogue as 'my Lord' or 'Master' and so forth. At first she was amused, then she started to get irritated; after all, the armor she was wearing made it *pretty* clear she was NOT male! You might consider fixing those someday. :) Beyond that, a lovely mod and here's to hoping you post the sequel!!!

I'm barely into the first quest of this mod, and am already deeply impressed. Now, I've never read the Conan books, but I have seen the movies, and it seems to me you've caught the flavor quite well! The writing is vivid and intelligent, and the customization is lovely. (Though I can't use the heads because, well, they're neither 1.66 or 1.67 compatible. But that's a minor flaw, and doesn't bother me so much.) I am not particularly a fan of hack'n'slash, but the writing is so well done that I'm enjoying it immensely!

Not much of a code-writer, but I'd be happy to assist in beta or debugging of the sequel, simply because I'm eager to see more from you!

And now I have the urge to go check out the Conan books. True, the fantasy of that era tends to offend my feminist sensibilites, but hey, it's still classic fantasy, yes? :D

Excellent work!

Thanks for the comments. I haven't visited this site in quite a while, but it's good to see folks are still checking out the mod. As a small aside, I'd like to point out that Hyborian Age 2 is actually more or less finished, and has been for some time, haha. However, I had entirely too many conflicts with the new expansions, and I couldn't bring myself to debug it.

I do however, plan to grab the NWN Platinum or something similar this week, and fiddle around a bit. I can't promise anything, but I may get inspired to just make a new sequel. Ya'll will be the first to know! :)

This is absolutely the best Conan mod available. I loved the atmosphere and the use of music. The dialogue was superb, very appropriate for the setting.

I only had one or two complaints. First, you cannot play through this with a starting rogue .. can't be done .. you might want to mention that in your read me. (though I had no difficulty with a fighter)

Second, the need to continuously retrace your steps to finish the quests. It would have been convenient to find a way around this ... though I suppose any form of teleportation would have been contrary to the setting ... still, it was obnoxious. (so much so that I never bothered returning to tell the farmer when I finished his quest)

The end was a little abrupt, the virgins don't even speak ... would have been nice to have them praise you and make tempting promises of reward. Just something to add a bit more of that conan flair to the end.

At any rate, great material, here's hoping you eventually write a sequal. (though, considering the date on the last response, it doesn't seem too likely)

I haven't seen any recent comments by the author, which is rather disappointing. I thought this first module was fantastic. The dialogue really served to set the atmosphere and the adventure fealt like a Conan story all the way through. The required backtracking at points was a little frustrating .. but a very small complaint considering all the strengths of the module. I do hope to see another by this author in the none-too-distant future.

Just downloaded and finished this mod, and I wanted to thank you. As others have said, the use of music was excellent, and the visuals were stunning. I found the combats to be nicely challenging, and that's exactly what I'd hope to find in a Hyborian setting! :-)

I just finished the module and really enjoyed it. Excellent use of the music from the movie (one of my all time favorites, by the way). The only complaint I really have is that I was left wanting more!:) Keep up the good work...can't wait for the next installment (please)...

The music really transforms this into a great experience. There are some problems with difficulty and healing, but then, I suppose that's more authentic to the setting. Nice work and a great start...hoping for a part 2.

Well just finished up with it.

Not bad. Not bad at all. It's too bad the graphics in NWN aren't completely condusive to making this world work up front. Still thought the mod had two very good things going for it...

The dialogue..especially the PC was outstanding. It definitiely brought back the dark intrigues of the Hyborian world Robert E Howard had created...

The music helped...

The use of dark blue colors was a great idea. I always think of Frank Frazzetta paintings. He made use of dark green, oranges, reds and blues...

Man I hope you continue on with this. I hope you have read the original Howard stories...I'd love to see you try to convert "Red Nails" and "Queen of the Black Coast", "BLACK COLOSSUS", "The Devil in Iron", "THE TOWER OF THE ELEPHANT" to name a few of my favorites...stick with Howard only is my advice.

Dear Fearguis,

Just wanted to add my encouragement. I am surprised that the scripts for your sequel are so ruined, having created a few modules spanning CEP. Apart from a few head and Lisa-type models, I have had little difficulty. The only one I have noticed is the way DelayCommand is handled - now I never have two lines on the same delay, but separate by 0.1 s.
I really like the Conan feel to your module and think that a "Conan pack", a hak common to Conan modules that had Conan-type gear made for a low magic, low plate-mail type campaign perhaps also with subraces, would be a great idea. I might even do some recreations of the Conan short stories myself, but it would be a lot of work to live up to your fantastic effort!

Glad to hear your sticking with it. Ive been looking forward to this for ages.
Can we have a progress report?

Posted by SpearRib ( 217.255.xxx.xxx ) at 2004-12-29 01:17:00
me again... found the solution. I did not know you could actually enter a word outside the dialog boxes. Nifty feature :-)

That reduces my earlyer comment to my first sentence: Great work! And adds an apology for asking when the solution now seems so trivial...

SpearRib

PS: concerning Hyborian Age 2: It´s winter... programming is so much more healthy than catching a cold outside... and there are fans waiting ;-)

Great work, I´m looking forward to part 2. The fights were tough, but OK - I managed the Inquisitors by separating them and doing a guerilla like hit and run with a longbow I found to wear each one down, then finished them off with the sword (wouldn´t have it any other way in that setting :-)

I have a problem, though, that seems to prevent me from finishing the quest. The door to the guards training room that requires the password just does not open for me. I freed the thief, he gave me the password, I wear the uniforms (using the inquisitors staff since I miss the exotic weapon option), but the listeners behind the locked door are hostile and will not let me tell them the password. Is it a bug, or is it me?

Any idea when the second one is coming around? or if it is? Me and a friend enjoyed playing through this one. :)

MasterAub, try smashing open the trapdoor in the next to last room. The virgins are there, oh, yes... they are there.

Posted by dugfromthearth ( 24.18.xxx.xxx ) at 2004-11-23 21:59:00
I played this for about an hour and gave up.

With no magical healing, only 2 healing kits (all I could afford and then no access to more) and only one place to rest it was like pulling teeth. One wolf would kill me with two lucky blows. Or it would wound me and I would have to run back and rest. After every encounter I had to go back and rest, half the time being killed by a wolf before I could make it back.

The module looked cool. The story was interesting. It just wasn't worth banging my head against a wall with no healing.
