Welcome to the unknown. You can expect evil, darkness, thunder, lightning, rain, blood, weird locations, challenging puzzles, horror, mystery, powerful adversaries, undead, dark magic, traps and a strange story. So, what are you waiting for - journey into the unknown. If you like survival horror type adventures, then give this a try. I began by trying to capture the feel of the CHILL roleplaying game by Pacesetter, but with a D&D slant. There are several roleplaying opportunities and more than one ending. For people that like to explore there is a secret area - see if you can find it. Have fun and please vote.

Avoid!
Unless the module is fixed/revised I cannot recommend it.
Also, a good player should not need to look at the hints several time to complete the module. Sometimes is not what you need to do (answer to a riddle or something) but how the author decided to have us interact with the module to move the plot forward or complete a task. That part could be improved one way or the other.
Overall, I agree with THG's comments.
* Spoiler *
This time around I took my necromancer (Cleric) to do this module. The forest was OK although a bit tedious to get the transition to trigger. The courtyard OK as well. The ground floor was quite tedious due to a lot of repeated fights (less so in the cellar). Later on the henchman turned hostile (clever script) and followed me in the Chapel taking away any chance of getting some rest. Would have been OK if I was not forced to retreat from the first floor (I can handle one vampire but no three at a time) and once back in the Chapel I was unable to lure the foe someplace else (e.g. barn) and had no other choice but to try to defeat him. The fight did not go well (as I expected) and then one little boy turned hostile...

I just have to say this was the first module I ever played and probably the best I've still played to date. It kept me intrigued all the way, and I just have to say the door puzzle was just awesome.

When I follow the corpses in the woods, I don't get transported anywhere. Went back and forth through them. Could this be a hak pak problem from another mod or something? So far it's really intriguing.

I almost finished this one (with a bard 8/BG 1/RDD 1) after defeating every monster and solving all the puzzles (several monsters were quite tough but the puzzles were easy enough for me). Yet, I believe that it is almost impossible to finish this module unless you are very lucky.
1. You probably need a character with martial weapon proficiency. If you manage to pass some nasty ladies and if you can survive the traps you might get lucky and acquire a very important item. Average characters will have a hard time surviving.
2. Assume you deal with the creatures and the puzzles like I did you might find yourself stuck if like me you run out of something we mainly use in the kitchen.
I believe these flaws could be easily fixed with a minor update of the module and/or the description above.

I tried this module two years ago and perhaps I was still a rookie. I tried it again and got stuck in the exact same spot.
I have to agree with Amywien and THG here. The story looks great and so is the atmosphere, Yet, unless there is some way to tell the player not to explore some areas (like the basement) sooner or later one will be in trouble and die (this time one lady followed my character to the chapel and slowly took his life away). One could bring a character immune to ability/level drain but that would IMHO defeat the purpose of the module. Also, one should be able to make it (with an average character) without checking the walkthough over and over. I don't think it is possible without a fair amount of luck. Just my two cents.

Addendum: Seems there's more to the walkthrough and the puzzle than I thought. Probably not broken. Silly me.

Should be categorized heavy on the hack & slash and character level should be upped to where an amulet of health can be worn. As it is, the amount of high dc negative energy attacks (and the resulting level drains) occur to frequently to make combat interesting.
The trigger/scripted area transition (from forest to mansion) does not work well, which is frustrating.
Ambience is excellent, for the part I've played. Maybe I'll try again one day, with a higher level character.

Assume you start with 15/85 (standard CG on creation) then according to the readme you score max xp for alignment if by the end of the module alignment is within 11-19/81-89.
To stay within these bounds you'd have to play neutral/neutral.
Unless the readme deviates from the actual implementation in the module.
Posted by gg ( 209.30.xxx.xxx ) at 2005-03-19 23:11:00
...no that is 'not' what it means. It means you only get max exp if you role-play your align closely (as determined by the module).

Mhh, a comment about the award for alignment play. In the readme you state:
----------------------------------------------------------
- Alignment play is rewarded at the end of the mod. When
you first begin the mod your alignment score is captured.
If your Good/Evil and Law/Chaos does not deviate by more
than 4 points by the end of the mod, you get max XP bonus. Check your journel at the end of the mod to see how you
did.
----------------------------------------------------------
This essentially means that the maximum reward is only received when one plays their charactar neutral/neutral!
Hm...it's been a while. I remember the CHILL pen&paper. Guys like you make the classics be remembered. Really fun to play, tough puzzles and a good story line. I never would have thought of typing words to solve the riddles so thanks for the readme file.
Thanks for the great feedback Klaus. In time I may go back and rework a few things in "The Journey Unknown" but right now I am beta testing my latest module "Passages Thru The Lost Dimension". This new mod is huge and time consuming to test. I am determined to get it released soon.

Okay, I´m through! Best module I ever downloaded, although the riddles were a bit too difficult for me - without a glimpse at the readme it would´ve taken days.
Name of the City to close the portal: No chance.
Three things a vampire needs: I tried darkness, shadow, etc. - perhaps you can should take differt but close enough answers as right.
Now I´ll be of voting 10/10!

"Is it the children of the night?" Mo is funny like hell!
I encountered a problem: The impaled dead are merly spears without any dead, so I had to take a look with the toolset to find out were I was supposed to go.

This module had some great things going for it, as well as some things that really frustrated me. On the one hand it had a dark, spooky atmosphere, challenging battles, and tough puzzles - all good. But then some of the battles were too challenging, especially when you don't at first realize that the respawning monsters are never-ending. Thus, my pet golem got surrounded first thing and destroyed. Also, fighting level-draining monsters is no fun if you can't restore, and if you don't know if restoration will be available in the near future. Also, the never-ending respawning knives become a nuisance when I was trying to investigate the house and figure out how to solve the puzzles. Strangely enough, the final vampire wouldn't move from his spot, and once he exhausted his spells he just stood there and let me kill him.
I really like the idea of a horror module, and this one did a good job invoking a disturbing mood, but various game play issues, and a lack of NPC or henchman interaction detracted from the overall experience. There was enough good here, though, to make me look forward to your next module.
Hi Mirgalen, thanks for playing. The modules "The Journey North" and "The Journey Unknown" are completely unrelated. There titles are similar to reflect they were made by the same author - me. They are separate standalone adventures that differ considerably in content, structure and pacing.
The Level drain stuff you were asking about is a NWN bug I believe. In D&D 3rd edition you gain a -1 penalty to attack, save, skills, ability checks, and effective level for each level drained. When your level drained equals your hit dice you die.
*** SPOILERS ****
The best way to get hints to getting thru the house is to look in the readme file that comes with the mod. The latest version has both a hints section and a complete walk thru.
There are a total of three restoration potions - 1 in the cellar in a chest (also a cool item that blocks level drain), one in the chapel (in alter, **note you can rest in the chapel and its safe here** ) off the ground floor and one in a chest on the 2nd floor.
Hope this helps, Kent

I was looking for a module for my barbarian (lvl 8). Made a search a found "The Journey North (v1.21)".
I always check what other mods the author made and found this one.
I am not sure if the two modules are related so is this one a re-make of the other one?
Anyway I gave this one a try. I was expecting an outdoor adventure like something for rangers, barbarians or druids instead my character found himself in a very familiar settings (I completed "surviving horror" with the same character).
I am looking for a way to get to the 2nd floor w/o being killed by some ladies.
I found something odd, perhaps a NWN bug. In this module you may loose a level or more. I am however not sure why you would have negative saving throws and negative skill points after that. Yet you can go down to lvl 1 and retain full HP and BAB. Is this the way level drain works with the 3rd edition?
There is one potion of restoration somewhere in the module, can I find more or is there a (divine?) way to regain levels?
