Nice module. Some areas are a bit bare. Really enjoyed progressively changing town.

I think you need already 15-20 lvl character. Use some character Creator, console command dm_givelvl 20 or play some other module beforehand to level up.

Don't know if the author reads this anymore, but then, maybe *someone* finds this informative. ;)

Nice module if a bit short. Nice atmospheric designs like the Barrows and items with custom powers, although that means they won't work in other modules, I'm afraid.

Some issues worth mentioning **light spoilers**:
- Balance of suggested player levels, items and npcs didn't fit. I played with a Fighter-10/DwarvenDefender-6 and found no real challenge apart from the Death attacks (don't have Immunity yet).
- Many enemies are tough but not strong in the offensive, making fights tedious and unexiting. I only had 6 pts. damage reduction from Dwarven Defender without any items with further damage reduction like the Greater XXX Belts.
- No variation in enemies inside a zone. Mostly only*bleep*genous groups or single creatures (like the ice worms in the later areas).
- My henchwoman is Level 21 and only has two pieces of equipment inferior for her level?! She did well after I gave her some decent weapons and other older stuff my char didn't use anymore. :) (using Item Level Restrictions, so no uber-gear here)
- Most special Items are not usable at the suggested Character Levels with Item Level Restrictions on because they rank between Level 19 and 21 (a common mistake among module builders :/ ). Normally, I like to wait one or two levels in anticipation, but because of the shortness of the module, I didn't came to test many special items like the living armor. I was only level 19 at the end of the module.
- A dwarven smith and he can't create an axe?! (to the despair of my Dwarven Defender) The dwarven waraxe in his inventory would've been nice if it wasn't so underpowered this far into the module. So my dwarf kept using the two battleaxes from the Barrows. Many thanks for them by the way, though I didn't work out how the rage curse really worked beside making me red. (?)
- There should be an autosave and/or character export after the final fight.

This maybe sounds overly critical, but apart from these issues I really enjoyed the module! (I don't know the original so I can't compare them.)

Very nice module!
few things:
- white wolf quest - couldn't finish it, however trying every convo option, all the time
- sahuagin model could be used instead of lizardfolk one
- critters description - none.
- ice golem sentries were neutral towards me, if they were supposed to be attacked then there should be conversation that would end in them becoming hostile.

Actually, every quest goes "somewhere", the thing is Glenn was very faithful to the original expansion to Icewind Dale, and such gave close to no hints regarding the sidequests. You can complete every single quest, but it needs to be done at certain points throughout the storyline. For example, after getting to the Burial Island, new events happen at Lonelywood, and new conversations are available. The same happens with most of the other, apparently unsolvable, quests. The only thing missing, as far as I recall, is the actual fight against the white wolf, but even then, you don't need such in order to complete the quest.

Anyway, seeing as there are a lot of lower quality modules being graded with perfect tens out of subjective justifications and opinions, I'm changing my vote for Glenn and his HoW. I think it is a lot better than many of the modules rated above it.

I really liked this mod. Great story, great atmosphere, very good character RP interactions, especially with the henchwoman.

***!Spoilers!***

As others have mentioned, the Ranger v Trapers (v Werewolf?) quest never went anywhere. Oh well, can't help everyone I suppose.

I really really liked the henchwoman dialogue. A very in depth complicated (sometimes frustrating) character. Fantastic use of varied dialogue options and persuade options.

Which is why I was a bit sad that the game ended so abruptly as it did :/

It would have been great to tie things up w/ her.

Finishing up with the barabrians would have been nice too.

The cave in the back of the dragon's lair was out of order. I thought it would have the patented dragon hoard, but no.

I kinda felt like the last half of the last chapter was ripped out of a really good book.

Still, it was very enjoyable, and I thank you very much for creating a great gaming experience.

Just finished after replaying Luremaster which i had played a few years ago. This was pretty much as advertised, only problems I had were with the tilesets, seems some tiles were missing as some areas just - well if you're interested I'll get some screen shots up.
I never resolved the werewolve quest, and never got the henchy - coul;dn't get her to join, the one with the big axe right? Checked for the walkthrough but the site is gone. I soloed it, wasn't too hard as I had some potent gear - and I do not even remember were my character got it: a power stone which gave me stoneskin and knockeddown my enemies and a spell staff which gave a host of buffs, couple that with IGMS, Bigbys and firebrand and all battles seemed the pretty much the same.
Played a rogue2/wizard15 at start.

I am proud of this creation of yours. And I believe the original creators of "Heart of Winter" would be proud of you as well.

Hi Jedijax, thanks for your comments on this module and my TotL one. I appreciate your support and I also got your email about other projects I should work on, I'll answer the email separately though.

The henchwoman in this module was not from the original or anything like that, she was created by me especially for this module - I always try and provide at least one companion in my modules and I tried to develop this one further than Derrick from TotL.

Just like Trials of the Luremaster, by the same author, is a wonderful and entertaining conversion from Icewind Dale's expansion. One of my regular adevntures, this short module is everything a conversion should be. Congratulations to the builder. The reason I give it an 8.50, is that the material is not original; however, where did you get the henchwoman out of, my friend, is she an authentic addition, or did you pull her out of some other content? Very well developed and interesting character.

Posted by gpudney at 2009-03-03 15:49:17
Thanks for your feedback, hfrank. I'm glad you enjoyed the module - despite the one or two minor difficulties you came across.

In terms of other modules, there is my Trials of a Luremaster module which is also on the vault. Fingers crossed I will also be releasing a module in the next few weeks after finally finishing a module I've been making for years! Just needs some testing now.

Thanks again for your support.

Refreshingly literate and coherent (nice to find an author who knows how to use a spellchecker). Only complaint is that combats were too easy for my Fighter/Weaponmaster. Had to crank up the difficulty to Hardcore D&D, and my character still didn't need to take any healing potions before the final combat. Otherwise, I regret only that the module looks to be a stand-alone. Would like some Epic-level adventures by this author. Only game-engine glitch was that the back door to the final chamber wouldn't trigger, so I probably lost some interesting magic items. There were a few loose ends--the significance of the magic mirror in the innkeeper's room, the Spirit of the Forest quest implied by the ranger in the village. Hope that the author has more yet-undiscovered treasures in the NWN Vault. If not, hope he is working some new adventures.

In your INSTALLATION document, I believe you mean a ".BIK" file, rather than a ".BIF" file, should go in the NWN > Movies folder.

A very good module, I played it solo with a level 17 ranger/fughter and rhe supplied henchwoman. None of the fights were too hard for this combo, but casters nay need to be a higher levl.

Of the handful of modules I've played, this was my favorite so far. It was thoroughly immmersive and professional. The dialogue was well-written and engaging: there were enough conversation choices that I almost never felt like I had to choose an out-of-character response. The provided henchwoman is indeed a very interesting personality.

I took a 17/1 Sorcerer/Fighter through this and found the difficulty a bit easy, but so much so that it was boring.

Thoroughly enjoyed this shortish mod. I played with a party of Sor(14)/Pal(15)/Bard(14) who ended up 17/18/17.

Dialogue was sharply written with no typos, which was great. Atmosphere was a particularly strong point I appreciated the barbarian society in a way I havent before in other mods. The town was another highlight with memorable (believable and non-clichéd) characters and, again, good dialogue. The misty areas we fought through were also well designed. Combat was a little on the easy side for my party (who are quite well equipped) with only the insta-deaths causing one complete party wipeout other than that there were a few deaths due to being careless. We took the henchperson at the beginning but left her on the floor fairly soonish since we thought combat was more interesting without her.

SPOILERS

The last fight was fun we played it through 3 times. Once the Paladin basically killed everyone, once my sorcerer Time Stopped then Empored Firebranded and IGMSed everyone, once two of us got scared and the other slaughtered.

Another highlight was trying on some armour in the mage tower on the Isle, leading to 2 remaining scared PCs and an old mage expending his scant remaining lifeforce beating up on a really big demon :) We reloaded and flogged the armour to some innkeeper he gets a problem we get 70k gp :)

Noticed only one minor bug which was that the dwarf smith at the end acted as a shield-factory. I wasnt carrying the damaged shield another PC was but I could get the dwarf to keep making me multiple shields :)

Thanks again for all your hard work!

Took my first OC character through this and never got around to voting. I can't give much detail. Never played the original, but it's easy to separate a good conversion from a bad one because the good ones are built like good modules in their own right. This is a good one.

This was one of the first good modules I played, in fact. Crisp writing (I have no idea how much it's copied from the original, but I liked it), good story (certainly copied from the original), and wonderful area design. The starting town evolves over the course of the adventure, good example being the trapper quest (don't remember exactly how you're supposed to go about resolving it, but you eventually have to confront the Ranger until he reveals his secret). A nice enjoyable little adventure all around.

Big issues I remember having ... the death shield creatures on Burial Island were a real pain for my warrior, but nothing terrible. The last few areas with (a Sahuagin temple, I think?) seemed rather devoid of life. And the ending was a tad abrupt.

Posted by Elhanan at 2007-09-12 08:51:24    Voted 9.75 on 09/12/07
As I have not played the original, I cannot compare. However, I enjoyed the high lvl adventure a lot, and was pleased that it was one set on non-planar soil.

While it is linear, this does not distract from the tale. I was quite caught up in the peacemaker role, and even liked the simple joy of restoring a family. Never knew that a Rogue/ Bard/ AA was such a great marriage counselor!

I also went w/o the head override. Not too distracting at my settings, and I simply gave the henchwoman a helm. This fixed things quite well.

I enjoyed the dialogues a great deal. Just noticing that certain choices may not be available upon next meeting makes the speech selections very important. This is a possible reason for replay value in itself.

My only quibbles are little ones; nothing major.

* The Ranger vs three trappers story never was resolved. And I never saw an option to hunt the culprit, and finish this quest.

* Certain dialogue sets would repeat earlier choices if all was complete. It might aid immersion to have these removed or restricted, or simply have these characters speak in 'floating text' common when revisited.

* No dragon treasure stash? Especially with another dead dragon in the entryway? This may be duped from the Original, but pls consider adding a pile of coins or something to feed our inner Dwarves.

Well done!

Great module that I had a lot of fun playing. Burial Isle atmosphere was really special. Only quirk I had was unable to complete the Ranger quest. I noticed one comment mentioned two of the brothers were killed. I heard one brother was killed but might have missed about the other one. Does hearing about the two brothers complete the quest or is there something else? Thanks for a great mod!

Posted by Mirgalen at 2007-05-26 19:06:54
This is a great trilogy ( I did not play the original games btw). An absolute must play IMHO.

* Minor Spoilers *

Hi Glenn,

Thanks for your answers (in the other pages) I have just completed the trilogy with my Knight (Monk/Cleric/Cot) who reached lvl 20 just before the final fight. Had to check the hint once since I could not locate somebody on the isle. Still have no clue how to solve the village subquest (spirit of the forest) I may get to solve this one next time I replay HoW. The toughest part was indeed the island (probably reloaded once or twice there) and Gloomfrost. The final fight was a walk in the park with this character.

In your other message you explained to me how to solve a specific puzzle the trouble is I only found one tomb in the entire area (the one next to the altar) so I have no clue where the other tombs would be. Also in the hobbit village nobody gave me a quest may be they don't like humans or something.

Hmmm... I'm biased, of course, but to me it seems that the community is really hungry for modules from the start this time around. They've learned to love community-made modules with NWN1, after all. Phoenixus's Tragedy in Tragidor already has almost 7000 downloads and over 100 votes. Markus "Wayne" Schlegel's The Pool of Radiance has over 7600 downloads and over 50 votes. Markus also wrote in the NWN2 boards: '1000 downloads and almost 30 votes in a single day. [...]. it took months with AHTD to get half as much years ago.'

Additionally, it seems to me that the builders familiar from NWN1 have tended to be (or to more or less slowly become) pretty enthused about the new toolset.

Add to that a couple of expansions in the coming years (no official news, yet, of course)... ;) So, there's some encouragement. :D

Anyway, thanks for your response & all the best,

Lariam

LOL

No, not Icewind Dale. At present I'm not working on anything. I keep toying with the idea of doing a module that I came up with for NWN 1, but thus far I haven't managed to motivate myself to do it!

To be honest I still have my reservations about building for NWN 2. Is there really the demand that there was for NWN 1 modules?

Okay - NWN2 is out! So what are you working on, Glenn? Icewind Dale? ;)

Had a good time with this version, wish Luremaster was linked to follow. I thought the henchgirl added more enjoyment for me than the original Infinity engine version gave with its wooden companions. Couldn't remember much from the originals backstory and settings though, and I needed them refreshed to pick up the story thread. Thanks for all you hard work.

Posted by Mirgalen at 2006-10-20 04:53:30
Really great module. Too bad I had many problems with the final fight due to bugs and design decisions. I will have to replay it with another character to fully enjoy it.
Note: The bugs are from Bioware AFAIK not fro the module itself.

1. The shifter class is broken and almost unplayable. Equip your character with a couple of items (e.g. a magic shield and a belt), cast some protection spell (e.g. barkskin), shift to something else (e.g. Minotaur). Your character should be OK, now save and reload and see the problem.

2. Only in this module and during the last combat only I believe I had trouble using Defensive Stanse (Dwarven Defender). The char would be in attack mode but would never attack (similar to the WW Attack bug).

These to bugs combined made it impossible (reloaded 4-5 times) to complete the Boss combat w/o using meta gaming and/or cheat.

Oh and thanks everyone else for their feedback. I don't check here very often since I don't build anymore (at least until NWN 2 comes out!), but I like reading your comments when I do.
