Desolate and abandoned, the evil alchemist's mansion stands alone on the cliff, looking out towards the sea. Worth a try.

It was fun playing this with a group back in 2004. Not that enjoyable solo. Even if you start at lvl 3 or 4 you may still get stuck (secret doors) or killed. Still a must play for PnP fans though.

7: A good module with some issues, but worth the download for almost anyone.

For a PnP, the city is great. Good diversity between it, house and other settings. Lighter on combat comparatively speaking but a great change. Played thru solo with a lvl 5 character without much challenge --consider lvl 4 or less. No problem with secret doors. A great Mod. Thanks for the work

A very well done module that would have ranked higher if it had any of the 'high-tech goodies' (movies, world-maps and such). I ran the module both as a PC and a DM back in the day so I might be a bit biased (somehow you-know-who never convinced me as a PC in eitehr version, simply because of the contrived written story; I can hardly blame the converters for that)

Most Memorable Likes:
too many to list but the design of Saltmarsh itself and the boat sprung out. I liked the way Saltmarsh was re-used in the U2 adaption of the same builder, it felt very organic.

Most Memorable Dislikes/quibbles:
- the Single Player level recommendation was a bit too conservative, at least for a Dwarven (ex)Paladin/Fighter of 4th (total) level. Only the the last boss-fight was anywhere near dangerous, I missed encounters in the cellar.

- the rotgrub-gag was a bit repetitive

- call me a greedy bastard but in single player, without any henchmen at all, having all that silk amount for most of the treasure is a bit harsh, I had no space for it & for some strange reason the Saltmarshians didn't want to loot the ship even when emptied of hostiles if you catch my drift;
- the rotten floorboards were annoying because they were hard to avoid & didn't amount to more than falling down, recieve some damage, run outisde the house, rest, go up again, rince and repeat. This is the only thing that really bugged me.
- it would have been nice if all those codebooks, nautical charts etc. had had some more purpose than atmosphere.

All and all an excellent starting module that I would recommend to all.

Good play and bonus for nostalgia.

I enjoyed this module because it was relatively faithful to the original as I remember it. We played with two people and it was a blast, although relatively easy. I hate rot grubs, however.

Very interesting. I liked it a lot. I thought there was just enough combat to keep things exciting. I loved the audio in the haunted house. Very spooky!

A very well-done adaptation of the pen-and-paper adventure. Two of us played it together and we had a great time.

Arbitré esté módulo en mesa/papel hace unos años, y nos quedó una partida estupenda. La adpatación a NW es excelente. A mi me da por jugar al NW por rachas, y casi siempre "inauguro la temporada" jugando a este gran módulo.

Excelente!

This was the first module I played in D & D back in high-school 25 years ago (we never managed to finish it) and it was a real thrill to play this in NWN. Very well done. Good way to start a character and a nice little play for a quiet weekend.

Minor Spoiler ==============

The way you handled Ned was perfect. Never expected what happened down in the cellar although I was very suspicious of him from the start. Good surprise.

Hilarious!

I am in the beginning stages of converting this to NWN2 (just got a decent video card).

***SPOILERS****

This would've been a ten, but it crashed after I slaughtered the Captain. Had a brilliant time.

I have abandoned NWN2 to work on classic Greyhawk/AD&D1 PnP modules. This module was so good, it was almost serendipity.

If you want a whole new slant on this module, play with a Level 1 sorceror. Name your panther familiar "Scooby."

Investigate the spooky mansion. Run away from the 'yikes, raggy, skeelitons *whimper*.' Thwart the smugglers plot, who would've got away with it, if not for those pesky kids... brilliant.

Where are those scooby snacks!

This is a great recreation of the first of the 'U' series! You put alot of work into it and it turned out well. Thanks loads, and I look forward to the next part.

**Possible Spoilers**

I agree with some others who complained about the difficulty in finding the secret doors, but sometimes us players get too used to things being 'easy' so I can't ding ya for putting them in the mod, because they were originally there.
The cursed item is cool. The fraud of a travel agent made me chuckle too! The pseudodragon confused me a bit.
My only real problem is quite simple to fix. It is easy to script so that after you finish the mod there is an actual ending that takes you out of the game and back to the main menu. Without that I wondered around thinking that there was someplace to end the mod. Just a bit of advice to smooth things out, but honestly this mod was quite well done! Thanks again...off to U2!!!

Wow, it has been a while. I am pumped up about NWN2 coming out soon. I plan on getting the toolset early and making a conversion of this module for NWN2 as soon as possible. I hope everyone who tried this one will try the NWN2 version. Thanks for all the feedback.

I still remember playing this as a kid when it first came out in Pen and Paper. The screen shot of the original Pen and Paper module brings back wonderful, wonderful memories of sitting around with the dice, pencils, papers and a few friends.

Thanks so much to the author for accurately recreating a brilliant classic module.

Excellent.

Heh... I wrote: "I have the U1.hak file in the hak directory". It was a case issue (I'm running NWN on Linux). Renaming it to u1.hak fixed my problem. :^)

This is the first module I've tried to install (U1). I unzipped the ZIP file in my main NWN directory and moved the .mod file to the modules directory. I try to start a new game with it. It finds the module okay, but when I click either Create New Character or Select Premade Character, it prints an error about a "Missing required HAK file". I have the U1.hak file in the hak directory; is something else required? (I'm running v1.66.) Thank you.

Played this a while back and didn't vote. True to the original PnP module which I had when I was much, much younger.
Cheers

Loved every minute of it. This was the first user-created module I ever played. Of course, there weren't many surprises for me since I DM'd it way back when, in PnP format. I was surprised how true it stayed to the original, even with your added content like the actual town of Saltmarsh. I also recently had an old friend buy NWN (the old computer couldn't handle it) and again, I used this as our first module. He commented on how well put together it was. Thanks for your hard work.

Great mod oraweb! I liked the following aspects:
1. Having to actually use a torch for a change.
2. Your general use of lighting -- blue in the attic, etc.
3. Falling through the floor.
4. Rot grubs and yellow mold -- really took me back to the old PnP modules.
5. The ship. I was impressed with the size of it. The only minor point here was that the area transition screens showed a building instead of a ship.

I thought the following could use improvement:
1. I never could figure out what to do with Ned. He would follow me around for a while, then disappear. He was more of a nuisance than anything else. He even triggered a trap my rogue had set for the smugglers.
2. Plot items. You should either flag them as plot items in the toolset so fools like me don't sell them, or put a warning in the readme. Maybe it's laziness, but I've gotten used to selling everything to merchants unless it sells for 0 gp (which tells me it's a plot item and I should keep it).
Thanks again for all of the time and effort you obviously put into this mod.

Really enjoyed this module. This was one of the first P&P modules I can remember playing and I was glad to see someone had taken the time to convert it. Great job!

Great and fascinating atmospheric module, but the secret door idea was seriously flawed. I had to read these pages to find out that there actually is another (3rd) secret door. You should have made clear that this module was primarily suitable for an elven rogue.Keep up the good work re NWN2!

Played this one a while ago when I was unregistered. I thought this was an excellent start to the trilogy - a must play for PnP fans. Won't spoil with specifics, but it had some great surprises and neat touches.

This module felt just like playing PnP. Sigh of nostalgia.
Thanks for the work! A welcome break from hack and slash with a nice story.

Excellent... haunted house sounds, different backgrounds from the city to the haunted house levels to the caves to the pirate ship.
All in a short sized mod packed to the punch.

Seems to need a makeover for v. 1.65.
Cannot access the boat from dock C no matter how many times I click the blue rectangle area transfer from the dock.

Also, how do you solve the lost little girl in the warehouse quest?
