A fairly standard, "Save the kingdom" mod, that still holds up well and is amazing for a first module. As others have said, really good work on the henchmen (Take them ALL!).
Very good writing as well. Though this is a bit Monty Hall, so if you are offended by excess treasure, beware. :)
BTW I can't believe people complain about item/level strip at the start of a module meant for a new 1st level characters??
The sequel does another strip (author likely realized he overdid it in this one) and that may be a legitimate reason to grumble, but not here.

I couldn't find anything wrong with the mod. Yes, the item strip is annoying, but it's an intended part of the mod so I won't remove points for it. Finding and recruiting all three henchmen may require a peek at the guide as well, so be aware.
I played through with a pally and a bard, and found both to be enjoyable.

What is the starting level?
The information says 1st but the first henchmen I got was already sixth level while I am only second.
I must say, I'm extremely disappointed with the ending I got. Not in respect to the main plot, but in respect to the ending regarding the henchmen. I've always encouraged the female "henchladies" and supported them and I am told I don't recognize Persey as a friend?
How does the staking of Drakkar work? I have a stake, I'm just not sure how to use it...

I'm on my long overdue voting-rampage, so here's my opinion on this module, allthough probably no one cares anymore ;).
This one is a great module with very sympathetic npc's and an intriguing story. Probably the first time I ever find the main villian believable, besides maybe lady aribeth in the OC, and that alone is worth a high vote I think ;). And it's well done in terms of scripting and design and all, so: Thank you for sharing this with all of us!

Just finished this module; I would have given a 10, due to good dialogue, good scripting(the hidden forest only revealable via the helmet trick was nicely done, for example!), not quite the best storyline ever, but still very very good(better than I can come up with, but that's not saying much :P)- actually, I can't argue specifically as to why it shouldn't get a 10... ...it just shouldn't...
Excellent work though, and thank you Kevin Chan!

Fantastic module! This series by Kevin Chan is setting a new benchmark for me. The story really pulled me in, with its creativity and the plot which allowed the PC's actions to affect the course of events.
As for combat, I appreciated the relatively difficult, yet sparse fighting. Playing the game, you felt that the combats were necessary, interesting, and useful - I can only compare to the "hack-and-slash" modules which constantly throw cannon-fodder for the hero to mow down, and end up boring the heck out of .. well me, for instance.
I played this module a few months ago, so don't remember all the details - just that this is one of my favorites. Top 3 mods/series ever.

While I was looking for a new mod to play I came around this beauty, not the regular hack and slash which I played before but a story driven gameplay. I thought it would be worth a look and brought in a bard based archer.
Looks of this module are good, I liked the way you set up the different quarters of the city and the general looks of each of these quarters. Shops and buildings found in the quarters live up to the expectations, also the way npc's are placed is natural. Places outside the city are also well done with special credit to Anfang, it's really nice to see how you were able to give the disorienting feeling. I think all areas use the standard tilesets so don't expect any special visuals around here. Some area's are fancied up with little animations which are nice additions to the scenes.
The story is the key of this module and it's good, it contains a number of plot twists and open ends. It is good how you connected the attacks to the city and how the story unfolds in the end. Much of the time is spent talking, either for gaining or reporting information. NPC's gave a lead where to continue the explorations and thereby warn about what I could encounter during your quest and most of the time the quest lives up to the expectation. After I completed the quests NPC's reaction changed although at the end of the story some NPC's kept talking about the past rather then the future. Sidequests are plenty and come with the main story, it's a pity that some of the sidequests couldn't be refused so it was good I had a neutral character. There are a number of flashbacks which devine your goals and motivation during the story.
As said the gameplay is story-driven and a lot of the time I spent talking to NPC's either to gain or report information. Also negotiation with some of the NPC's is possible. Fights are sparse although there are a couple of fights needed to continue the story but also to make the boring parts more interesting. The opponents are hard (especially for my archer) but there are a lot of magic items and spells which helped me survive these encounters. Some of these fights would've been impossible for me if I didn't use some special tactics like luring the enemy to a better prepared party of npc's (which I think is a good, if not great solution).
On the website you created for this module you promise heavy dialogue, high-magic, uber gear and sparse but challenging fights and I have to admit that the module lives up to this expectation. However the heavy dialogue and sparse fights won't be enjoyable for everybody. For me the story, story telling and tactical fights made this module very enjoyable and I look forward to playing the sequal.

Played this again a second time recently, reminds me that this legendary game still can entertain as old as it is thanks to the great mods made by the community. Thanks again very much for building this awesome module.

Mr Chan, excellent mod! I have played it several times to see different things happen with the NPC and my character. The story is great! Setting, and work on the mod is tremendous! Lots of fun, difficult fights but tactics and proper prep make all things possible. Thanks for ALL of you hard work and time in bringing this mod and the Awakening to the community!! Best regards to you and yours. _________________________ Durned Elf..

OK, not great.
Even with all the excess gear, fights are too long/hard. Too many reload cycles.
Felt very cliched (orphan farm boy with destiny, Yawn)
Stealth pretty much useless.
Never found 3rd henchman, my good character forced to take Evil Monty just to survive.
Weak - Monty Haul goes overboard, so he strips all your gear for part 2 in series.
I have played a number of high ranked modules recently. This really doesn't deserve to be in that company. So many people just rate anything passable a 10. This IMO doesn't deserve the ranking it has.

What is the max number of henchies you can have? As I have 2 at moment but Monty it seems does not rejoin my Party when invited to do so. Or is there a bug here?

This was awesome! The story was amazing. I loved the characters... although it would have been nice to hava an arcane spellcasting NPC =) and maybe a different style of male romancable, not that good old Monty wasn't perfectly lovable of course! Just not every girl's type ;-)
Still it was an absolute joy to play... Excellent work! _________________________ Stupidity kills people.

Very good writing and storytelling. Good interaction between PC and NPCs, but I wish the romances had been a lot more detailed. I like that it wasn't all hack 'n' slash. I didn't encounter any bugs. The mod had nice continuity.

Oh! Spoiler***
There may be a bug with the lich. I had encountered him once and agreed to speak with the lords about leaving him alone and he'd leave the city alone. But, I went back to finish the soul gem quest, and I was able to just saunter in, loot his goodies, find the secret door (I believe I even waved in passing), found his phylantery, crushed that, got the "I killed the lich" signal, crushed the soul gems (got the "you're a hero again" signal) and walked out. No lich to fight - something should have tiggered ("Why are you back here, mortal?"). _________________________ Well...who would have thought THAT would happen?

I very much enjoyed this mod, and have started part 2. I'm running a female cleric and despite now having 2 clerics in the party, it worked really well. I enjoyed the interaction between the character and companions (although I always enjoy more); Monty at times was a bit too brusque, but, having started part 2, now I understand a bit more why. Evanine is a bit stand offish, and Persey a little too clingy, but, again, you can understand more why in the second part. I'm thinking, however, that some dialogues didn't trigger as reading through some responses here, I don't recall some things happening. Ah, well, it's totally replayable anyway.
My only true suggestion though not-really-a-complaint would be to have daytime quests for our folks so that they're not waiting around for nighttime patrol. I hate just wasting time - although I did get quite a lot of shopping in and changed the color of my outfit several times. Oh! And bugged Monty with my constant "jabbering"! The combats were well balanced; dialogue and storyline on the whole well thought out. _________________________ Well...who would have thought THAT would happen?
