Good entry to the old Writing Contest.

Interesting mini-mod with good dialogue and decent characters. A little more variety in the epilogues would've gotten a higher vote, although the ones that there were were nicely done.

Really sympathetic story with needed choices and Alignment changes :)
Thanks so much to everyone who voted. Congratulations to my fellow winners, and I hope that everyone who entered got something out of it.

Well, I put off voting in this contest for as long as possible because I felt it would be too damn hard to impartially vote on Thad's mod. Either I'd give him an undeservedly high score or overcompensate and screw him over. But here we are at the wire and I've been roped into doing this, so here's my as-unbiased-as-possible opinion.
The dialogue and plot are absolutely superb, or, by Thad's standards, just slightly better than usual. It evokes emotional responses ranging from anger to a nice tingly feeling in some of the endings. The plot branches okay - events play out more or less linearly, which is a minus, but there is a good range of responses and outcomes to them. The only nitpicks I could come up with is, for one, that some things aren't explained very clearly - like what the deal with the Forest of Dream is, or that you're supposed to use the rest command (which I keep forgetting is there - a dialogue option or object would have been more obvious.) Also, some of the dialogue edges on sounding, for lack of a better term, too modern ("What do you mean, what?" for example) but becomes less noticable as you get more used to how the characters talk.
So my dilemma is this: Other than trying to hard to avoid looking biased and going on nitpicks, I don't see a reason why A Hero's Death doesn't deserve a 10. I've already jotted down in my notepad that I'm going to give A Moonless Night 9.5, and I honestly would rank this module above that - so I can either vote 10, or 9.75 here. But you know what? 9.75 just seems too much like a spineless compromise. And I'm not spineless.

I really liked the story on this one. I think that too often games don't actually pull the player in, and when it's time to turn the game off, there's no remorse. I really like it when a game can pull me in so much as to make me forget that I'm hungry. That's the recipe for an awesome game and this one surely has it. I wish it was longer! I don't understand why so many people are complainging about it. Good job on this, and I hope to play more mods or games from you. How long have you been doing this for?

Goodmod, very nice to writing you displayed, but not new in storyconcept so you not getting the 9+ vote but story was very hero like.

I realy tried to give this one a chance, but it seemed like it was almost on rails, and the complaints that others had about the mercenaries staying even though you ran and being plopped into an unlikeable character kinda soured it for me. If ya didnt have these problems it woulda been a lot higher vote.

Technically the writing is very good. I had some problems with some plot devices you used, i.e. using dreams to communicate with the NPCs, which just didn't work with me.

I thought this was well-written, I've only taken a few points off because it would have been nice to give the PC some more optional/different motivations for fleeing the battle (so I feel more "in control" of the character.)
I reviewed the votes for this entry and the author did not vote for himself but was the victim of a voting abuser. I've removed the votes that attacked him on this basis. _________________________ Go here to add signatures to your comments and change the order the comments are displayed in. I played through this mod 5 times, and even though I went over the same events, each time I felt I had different reasons for what the character did. The dialogue options allowed me to either play the arrogant bastard, fleeing battle at the expense of others to save his own hide, to be the passionately loyal soldier who seeks the glory of Avalbane to the end, or just a simple farmboy who was never really meant to be a soldier in the first place.
The writing is top notch and gave me a feel for the characters in such a short amount of time and even gave me a little chuckle every now and then. Good work.

I don't really understand what the hype over this module is. It was ok, but not the best. Still, I don't think you deserved the 1.0's! Good luck.

Wow. I just downloaded this last night, and it was great. The dialogue especially. Kudos.

I'm sincerely sorry about the spam votes; I did not solicit them and, as you can probably guess from the comments, they're part of a personal grudge by a troll I recently banned from my messageboard.
I've been speaking with Maximus about trying to have them removed. It doesn't matter if it's a 1 or a 10, I don't want a vote I haven't earned.
While I have asked friends to vote, I've always made it clear that I want them to vote honestly.
Sorry that messageboard drama spilled over onto this contest.

I can't withdraw my vote, but I'll put it right in line with your score prior to eloH's stupidity. Sorry, Thad.

This is an excellent module. I loved the choices you were given, and the scripting was flawless. This is a winner right here, folks.

I quite liked the premise of this module and the question it tries to raise about the meaning of heroism. The writing was good, but the dialogues could've used a bit of work. To be specific, I couldn't quite believe that Magnar would decide to frame the PC and throw him/her in jail just for being insolent (since he doesn't do so if you're apologetic).

Revised, after further mods' reviews
---------------
Very good module with developed story and NPCs, but there should be better opportunities to explore each character's motivations. How true were the PC's dreams? Dialog options allow the PC to choose different endings but no time to analyse those choices before reading the corresponding epilogues.
I liked how you gave the player a moral dilemma, though I disagreed with some part of the execution in terms of alignments. Magnar came across as such an evil character that it didn't feel like a lawful good action to turn in his murderer to the authorities, or to kill him, for that matter. And it didn't seem like a chaotic thing to make a remark that Magnar himself fled when he was berating my character for not fighting to the death. The other issue I had was with the lack of control that the player was given during the game. The only real decision was made at the end. The multiple endings were rather good though.

The last thing I wanted to do was to continue to play this module. The writing was good, but the plot and the direction that writing takes you isn't fun. I started off as a coward and deserter - wasn't a pleasant feeling.

Well. Clean scripting, no breaks or bugs. Follows the contest rules pretty decently, and gives a lot of choice as to the reasons for your actions. Especially for a first run, worhty of a good score. _________________________ "Oh s***. Not again." - Random pedestrian
