Description
"Know, O Prince, that between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities, and the years of the rise of the Sons of Aryas, there was an Age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars." - The Nemedian Chronicles.
Such half-legendary fragments are all that remain to tell of the Hyborian Age and its greatest hero, Conan. You can relive these tales as Conan, or as a hero of your own design, following your career from its beginning as a youth among the Aesir, to your eventual rise to claim the throne of Aquilonia, the most powerful Hyborian kingdom.
"Legions of the Dead" describes the first recorded exploits of the young Conan, when as a youth of sixteen summers he fled his home in Cimmeria to join with a band of Northern barbarians in the frigid land of Asgard. The original short story was written by L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter, based of course on the collection of Conan stories by Robert E Howard. It pre-dates the more well-known "Tower of the Elephant" which is, taking the chronology of Conan's career, the first Howard story. The fact that "Legions" deals with a very inexperienced Conan, and the fact that the story is less well known, makes it a good start for a chronology.
Please use my music hakpak, samples of the original score for the Conan films by Basil Poledorus, unless you are desperately hard up on download time.
Final Version 1.03
This final version corrects some minor issues and includes a new 11 race Hyborian subrace system.
I have game version 1.23.1765 English (OC+MOTB+SOZ) and it doesn't work. After creating character, it says can't load module.

Could have been a masterpiece.
This was to be the first part of a serie that was never finished. The story is interesting, the cutscenes pretty nice and the music is really good but that's not a surprise. On the other I had a few glitches as the module was hastily coupled with poor design decision(s) here and there.
DnD was never about doing exactly what the DM or module maker had in mind or else lose your character. This may well work in interactive-adventure-book or in console game but not in DnD (that's the reason why Gygax gave us AC and Saving throws). The adventurer should always have a chance (to win or escape) no matter how slim this is not the case here.
Now add Conan on top of that and this critical feature/flaw becomes even more important. Conan should be able to swing his sword and cut down those (average) soldiers easily. Hit and run is as anti climatic in this settings as it can be.
I looked at the walkthrough after playing the last battle and found that I had done pretty much what I had to so the constant hit-n-run and the couple of reloads I had to do where IMHO out of place.
Instead of playing Conan (yet once again) I decided to go for Achille(s) and found that Cimmerian could well fit somebody with an Aegean background. Finished Barbarian 5. Here is a list of the issues I mentioned:
- Siggi took my shield instead of the wood (that's -3 on AC for the rest of the module)
- Using the hook+rope too closed to the wall provoked AoO
- Trying to take cover around the castle corner or something ended in death (poor design)
- Got the blindness glitch but I RPed it like the curse of the Queen for breaking and entering uninvited
- In the castle hit-run-rest repeat and rinse (not very heroic) same with the cloth/armor trick
- During the last battle I decided to attack the boss (good idea) but the path was blocked resulting in death not to mention the bard counter attack script never fired (it worked the second time however).
IMHO "The tower of the Elephant" and "Pirates of Hyboria" are much better that this one. The fans of Conan may still find it vaguely entertaining.
`hey, i found a problem, The rope is nowhere to be found for the castle infiltration :( incredible mod though :P _________________________ Let us go out this evening for pleasure for the night is young

Short and sweet, no bugs, just sort of getting into the feel and the end!
I have tried two other alternative paths but I keep getting killed on the last stand. will try again but hard.
I was wondering if you have moved on with any sequel to NWN2?
-.25 is for brevity,
regards

Good story. Brief but well done overall. I found it challenging but not overly difficult or complicated. I would be interested in others of this type.
sorry Devilla it took so long to answer if you send me an e-mail through my profile, i will guide you through it.
Anyway there are 2 things i would try, first one is rename the mod yourself with the extension ".mod" at the end without the brackets ofcourse if that doesn't help then rightclick on the mod file, choose open with "choose program" then select nwn as the program and click the box always choose this program with this type of file. ( or something like it, i have the dutch version so it might be phrased differently)
click ok and try running nwn now.
anyway send me a mail though my profile if it doesn't help, i probably respond sooner lol.
Kraven thank you so much for jumping in to help. My 4th file is a movie clip not a mod. When I right click The Conan Chronicles 1 - Legions of the Dead it says this; TYPE: Movie Clip
Size 5.29MB I have this in the mod folder so I am unsure what is going on. It is possible I renamed a folder to down load all my NWN files but have been doing this all along with no problems. What down loader do you use?
Dev
Devilla, yes there are 4 files.
1.conanmusic.hak - goes into the hak folder
2 and 3 - Legions of the Dead Readme.txt and Legions of the Dead Walkthrough.doc - i put these in a documents folder
4.The Conan Chronicles 1 - Legions of the Dead.mod _ this is the mod file and goes into mod folder, i think this is the file you describe as a a hard disk camera movie.
2nd i don't have nwn installed atm so i can't check but the normal install path is C:\NeverwinterNights\NWN and then a subfolder. You said C:\Program Files\Black Isle\NeverwinterNights\modules but that can't be right unless you named the folder that yourself. Check out the names from your nwn directory again and see if they are named correctly. Hoped his helped
TreeDancer I had already downloaded it three times but did so again and it is not there. Here is what I get: a folder with 4 files, a hak file, a text document, a walk
through, a hard disk camera movie. I am downloading the
file that reads."The_Conan_Chronicles_1__Legions_of_the_Dead_v1.03.zip' I moved the hak to the hak folder. Then I went to my game and the mod is not there. I tried to down load another of Johns games and it was the same. DO you think something is wrong with my NWN Game?
Devila, the mod file should be in the The_Conan_Chronicles_1__Legions_of_the_Dead_v1.03.zip. The four files in it is: the mod (at the top), Walkthrough, Readme, and the hak. Maybe you should try to download the file again.
HELP!! I down loaded all files. 3 music, 1 text, 1 zip and no where to be found was a file named The Conan Chronicles 1 - Legions of the Dead.mod. Where is the mod file? Yes, I unzipped everything and put all into the right folder but I am still comming up short with no mod file. Am I doing something wrong or not looking in the right place to download the mod file. When I unzipped there was a walkthrough fil;e a music file a read me file and a hard disk movie file. I am stuck like chuck and need someone to reacah out and help me. I love John's mods and am itching to play this one. Thanks, Devila

Ok well after reading everything here I guess part 2 isn't ready yet then? Still curious if part 2 is a place holder why does it just start over?
strange...

Okay - great story, mod, layout -everything. I appreciate what you've done.
SPOILER
I am confused though, I completed part 1 and it ends with me being led away but when I open part 2 it begins with us trying to charge the castle with the Jarl alive, and I have no option to sneak in...what am I doing wrong?
thanks!

Hey - I just started playing this, I really like it so far - I am stuck though, I see no stairs to go up or down anywhere. I followed the walkthrough part, so I could get on with the module, but to no avail...
Could someone please specify where these stairs are? I have followed the secret door, looked in the big hall and dark corridors, nothing.
Anyone?
thanks!
love Conan. Been a Conan fan for the longest time. Played this module until I had to go on the rite of passage and kill the snow wolf, so I'm not giving it a rating at this time. 1 comment, I triggered a land slide and somehow got stuck on top of the pleateu. Could this be a bug or something? _________________________ By Clargin, may my axe hit true!

However, it was still a great mod. Please put the second part for NWN as well as NWNII!!

Can't fault it, I really can't. Intuitive, interesting, challening and deeply moving at the end. Only one thing to say - *please* put a map pin to the place you have to go to complete the Rite of the Aesir. It took me 25 mins to find it >.

A module my entire family enjoyed. Great story adaptation, allows multiple approaches to play so you can either sneak around more or bash through more. Great entertainment, nice animations that add to the storyline.

Great module. Loved it, even the ending! Great atmosphere.

This is a fantastic module that excels in pretty much every area: great story, excellent dialogue, challenging but well-balanced combat, great atmosphere, and truly fantastic use of music. I also liked the opening where you get to customize your character by picking a background. All in all, it makes for an incredibly immersive module that really draws you in. It's just a shame that there doesn't appear to be a sequel forthcoming.

I'll not repeat what others have said, but I concur that this is one of the best modules I have played.
Only minor problem I saw was that Old Grim and the Jarl got confused about my characters gender a few times. Also...

My character was given the chance to walk away at certain points (though it did not try - maybe not really an option?). Perhaps it would be appropriate to allow that after the Jarl's daughter is delivered? If my character enters the conversation with the Jarl after leaving the castle, getting dragged along to the final battle is obligatory.
That's quibbling, though, and I realize it. Overall, truly top notch and fun module. _________________________ flatrat

A truely wonderful module that left me craving more, Robert E Howard himself would be proud!
Whilst the module its self is pretty small, everything about it oozes quality. The storyline and dialogue are top notch, and the game itself is perfectly balanced, it provides a good challenge whilst not being too difficult or easy. One aspect of the module I really loved though was the music (I was already a big fan of Basilis Poledouris's music), the author of the module did an excellent job of implementing the original sound track from the Conan movies into the game, and it really sets the mood and gives it that 'Conan feel'.
I did encounter a couple of bugs on my play through, but nothing game breaking that will lower your enjoyment of the mod, there is a good chance you wont even notice them.
Overall it was an excellent job, and obviously a labour of love, I cant wait to play future chapters. Now I'm off to try out the authors other modules, if they are as good as this one then I'm in for a treat lol.

One of the best modules I've played. A bit short, but I'll take quality over quantity any time.
The music was great. The combat was well-balanced and the story was fun. I'd love to play more Conan stories. What a great mythology to exploit. May Crom guide your hand for a quick release of Chapter II!
Thank you.

This is excellent! Well written, well paced, it is tense and true to de Camp and Carter's story - Best module I've played by a country mile. Look forward to chapter two!
