Description
[Updated!]
From Within is an upcoming series of modules for NWN2.
This Prologue introduces some of the characters and of course the story itself, a lot of things which may or may not happen in the series depend on your actions here.
This module is for any characters, and you should create a new character for this module, as variables from your old character might interfere somehow.
I'm not going to tell you anything about the plot itself, and please don't spoil what happens in the module or what you may find when looking at it in the toolset.
I've tested it multiple times with different characters and there are some issues, but please be patient and if you feel a door should be open/unlocked, look around in the room, and then go back to the door again and see if the trigger triggers this time. I don't know why but sometimes triggers don't launch properly.
There will be no fighting in this module (well, almost none), the fighting will begin in the next module.
The Next Part is on its way, but I don't think my previous goal for release will be kept as I've decided to merge two modules for the next chapter.

Update! I hope most bugs and other annoying features have been removed now. Here's a list of some changes:
*The conversation with Captain Mouray no longer loops.
*Captain Mouray is now removed from the first floor as intended.
*Cameras, spelling and timings have been altered a bit, not perfect but at least better.
*I've added a new NPC. Many have pointed out the lack of personnel in the Castle, although it is in the middle of the night I've added a librarian who wanders around, looking for a book...
*Certain parts of the conversation with the tapestry no longer causes the game to crash, added a (oh so) neat conversation instead.
*The Queen is no longer a Queen, this was a dumb mistake and thanks to Tapio, it has been changed. She is now The Lady of Neverwinter, (the late) Lord Nasher's only child.
*Kinir now reacts if the player is a Drow.
*[IMPORTANT]The Exporting in the end has been fixed, this means all of you who has played the module before the update will have to play it again if the next part is to work properly for you. I'm sorry about this but there's nothing I can do but say:
"Enjoy another Run!" :-P

[Update for the Update...]
* Mouray's conversation in the armoury doesn't malfunction when selecting a specific node.
* Some grammar, spelling and camera angles fixed.
* The last area, Arbordale, has been given appropriate lightning (always night, lowered moon light intensity)
* Major grammar and typo fixes.
* The reported crash-to-desktop bugs have been removed.

Why on earth do module writers like this decide to automatically level-up your new 1st lvl character when they tell you it's a module for 1st lvl characters? It's just so stupid, frustrating, and a waste of time. That's an instant quit right there. If I wanted to play a character higher than 1st lvl I wouldn't pick a module for beginning characters. It's a one for that.

Modules like this make my blood to boil. Still - as a calm man - I use constructive critisism. It's hard but I try my best.

I couldn't even finish the module because a major bug prevented captain Mouray from appearing to the second floor. This means I had to read from the toolset how this module ends.

Well, the story...there's not just enough material to get any clear image from the following chapters or the author's skills. It's even too short for a prologue: there's just explained that mysterious things happen somewhere and that's it. It would be like stop reading Lord of the Rings after five pages (although to be fair I haven't finished the trilogy but least I've read five chapters).
Character desing is generally vague. Lady Victoria is only a shadow of her somewhat charismatic father. Kinir's good behavior doesn't match to my impression from "chaotic neutral" character. Although captain Mouray is a very sucseeded character, I ocasionally had fun when he was talking.

The main problem in From Within - and many other modules of its time - is the lack of ambition. I'm currently making my first module - actually campaing - and I could publish the first quest as a prologue before releasing the rest of the content. But I'm not going to do that because a good module maker should be PAG: Patient, Ambitious and Gutsy.

The most interesting thing is the feedback this trailer has got. Partly some high scores are because the community was fed up from character creators that most of them are forgotten - only Vordan's Hero Creator and JEGs Training Module have continued to grow and get new audience. Although Avendale was published a half month before From Within but why it has gotten lower average points than this is a complete mystery to me.

Partly it is because the community has wanted to encourage the author to provide more chapters. But the author is missing one or more of the three important features of a good module author. He hasn't provided any promised adds and - according to his profile - has completely left the community. Although From Within is top rated no one remembers it and this is played only by some weird guys like me who are doing research.

If this adventure had been finished the score would be much higher. Mr. Palm, if you happen to read this I'd like to ask you to spark your creative mind to its fullest flame. Be PAG.

just finished your nice little mod and have to say that it feels pretty much "finished", i liked the introduction and the behaviour between the characters. i was experiencing a bug, which forced me to restart the whole module (the first conversation abruptly stoped and left me in the castle with a load of locked doors). also the castle-design seemed pretty narrow - the decisions on locking / unlocking doors to show the player where to go didn't feel natural to me.

anyway, a good start and a well deserved 7 for your efforts. hope to see anything of you soon.

I know this module is for any character, but do you have a suggestion as to which race/class fits best?

Very nice, really loved one of the endings

General impressions, nice opening - hope to see the rest.

The second floor of the castle wasn't very 'castle like'. Not that I remember what Castle Never looked like that well from NWN1.

My character wouldn't dance with Captain Mouray if the mission depended on it - but she had a slight interest in Kinir which she couldn't possibly admit to herself.

... Er, when I start thinking things like that it's a sure sign that the Roleplay aspect of a module has succeeded. :-P

Castle Never (opening)
============

Guard Herman Wear : Do you get a chance to _not_ be spotted by him for rogues in sneak mode?

Wardrobe : "Rest" is a bit cryptic. "No point in changing now before sleeping." or similar might be better.
It should change to "The wardrobe is empty." or similar after you take the tunic out instead of back to "Rest"

Captain Mouray : "Good follow me we need armours." Should be 'we need armour'. "Can you just breif me one more time." Should be 'brief'.

Kinir : "My apperence often fools people" Should be appearance.
"I suppose your right" Should be 'you're'

Captain Mouray : "So grab your armours and weapons" Armour again. "The only thing I'll say is don't take too much. One pice of armour and two weapons ..." Should be 'piece'

Kinir : Still gives the "to the second floor" message after you are on the second floor.

Librarian : Any librarian looking for books with a _torch_ should be sacked. ;-)

Aulthar : "Absolutley not" Should be 'Absolutely'
"It's the closest village to our camp witch we" Should be 'which'
"Most exciting thing to happend here" Should be 'happen'

Okay, this module is somewhat too short, but what Ive seen is of good quality. There arent much possibilities or things to discover but the plot was nicely started and the companion seems interesting. The end is funny and Im curious how the story goes on.
What made me actually happy is that this is the first serialized NWN2-module Ive played which auto-exports my character at the end.

One little annoyance: the scroll from the shelf disappears, like any other imported equipment, if you go to bed. This made me restart the module and drop my stuff in the desk at first. ;)

Oh, crap! I posted and voted for the wrong module in the wrong window here.

I'm going to make this up by playing/re-voting this module next time. Oopsi.

Great module: area design, dialogues, shipping, resting-system, NPCs, quests, storyall excellent! I cant wait for the continuation!

A very intriguing start so far. The charaters are interesting, expecially Kinir, and the plot looks promising. I didn't rate it very high because it is just an introduction, but I look forward to the other modules. My only perplexity is about the end, that seems somewhat awkward in comparison to the previous feeling of the game. Anyway thanks for sharing your work with us!

"5 - Fair, Solid yet Unremarkable"
Plus 0.75 for showing a lot of promise in the plot.

There's basically nothing to do apart from getting railroaded into collecting some free gear.

I expect that when the next parts come out my vote will increase substantially, but for now this is just an intro.

Good start so far, I liked how you tried to make the module more driven towards dialog and roleplay. Here are a few of my comments:

Pros: Liked the scripted beggining, caught my attention and kept me playing through. I like the level design, the areas didn't seem empty, but actually lived in and alive.

Cons: The scripting is buggy and doesn't always work. I found myself doing the first part a couple times before giving up. The dialog is ok, but there are gramatical errors, and it's actually a little boring in places. Storyline doesn't always unravel in the most pleasing ways.

It's good overall for what it is, but it needs more work.

Thanks for letting us all know how your project is coming along. I know how hard it can be to work on these kinds of projects. If you're having trouble with some part, or another, of your project you might list the kinds of help you could use that way people would be more likely to try and help if they knew that their skills would be useful to you.

Good luck and take what time you need.

Posted by Palm at 2007-02-01 09:49:28
I'm working on it, it'll take a while though, 'cause I really don't want to rush it. I've done about a 1/3 of it by now, but the last parts usually take much longer than one would assume (there's always some odd problems) so I'd expect it to take a month or two, since I don't have much time to work with it in the first place. If you want to know anything, or even help, feel free to email me at frepal094gmail.com.

Good luck.

It was very short, and there were a few to few conversation options for my taste. But other tha that it was pretty good.

I hope work is coming along with your project. Good luck.

This is a very promising start. My vote is so low because I don't really recommend the general public try this at this stage... just those who are interested in works in progress.

Note I played a version I downloaded on Dec 11, so things may have changed since.

Story's got me hooked. I like the conversation scripting very much. Loved the tapestry bit: I like these adventure-game type aspects once in a while. The portal scene is gold.
Top gripes:
-Don't force an export character at the end. Give an option to exit without exporting.
-Some areas need more decorating, especially corridors.
-Never clear where Mourray has gone off to. Should remind player of next destination in journal.
-I don't think a Lady would be called "Your honor" (unless she's a judge?). Milady would be best.
-Too many spelling mistakes.
-Module starts off a bit rough. Should be an intro (maybe a convo tga?): "A forthnight ago, you received a letter from Lady Neverwinter requesting blablabla"

Good luck with development.

"Also quite weird that lady of Neverwinter trust's to evil dwarf."
It may seem weird, but if you speak to him and ask of his past or even just look at his description, you'll find out why.

As I've said before, adding any battle more then training combat on a dummy would just be odd at this point, in my opinion at least. You'll have to wait :-P. Anyhow, thanks for your comments, Thirdpres, blatantlyobvious and bietu.

Happy New Year!

I enjoyed this short prologue to what will hopefully be an interesting series, the characters within it seem original enough and is a neat intro into the plot.

I voted this a 7, I look forward to the follow up.

Keep it up Palm. Don't get discouraged. You've a very nice start on a fine module.

Happy holidays.

Thanks fo your comment, Jov. It feels weird though, because you are probably the first person who have disliked the characters and the plot (alhtough I can see your point, not much happens but this is just a prologue and would it be that great to have a major plot event here, like say an attack at the castle ala NWN1 OC Tutorial?)

"without given any explanations" is key.
"I like the mysterious beginning" see? This is planned, did you not hear what Kinir said after the armoury meeting?

"Spellcheck could be useful"
Crap, I thought I had tracked most typos down now. If you played the new update (released the day before your comment) could you, and everyone else who plays the update, please tell me of the mistakes?

I haven't looked at this page for awhile, too busy with the new chapter, but I would just like to thank everyone who has taken their time to comment and vote, although I'm slightly disappointed by the score, which keeps moving down from 8... please go up to 8 again, stupid score...
